local sports leagues - an important social element for expats
HUA HIN, THAILAND Regular readers of AWOL will be familiar with our pages devoted to the variety of local sports groups in the area, and most who either take part or have an interest in them will often take them for granted. The Hua Hin Darts League season ended this week with their normal individuals tournament and presentations, and we felt it was time to properly acknowledge the work done by both the organisers of that league, and all the other competitions that take place every week. While there will often be gripes made to these organisers over fees, rules and everything else under the sun, all of the people putting in the work do so in their own unpaid time, and they do it because they understand the value of these activities. The social and community value is often overlooked, but for many of the individuals taking part in the leagues and societies, they provide two important elements often missing in expat life; a regular social interaction and a ‘safety net’, particularly crucial for the many expats who live here on their own. There will be regular contact with other team members, and if one of the team does not turn up on match day, or can’t be contacted, this will normally trigger at least one of the team to make sure everything is OK, something that in their home country would be done by family, friends or neighbours but is often lacking for expats. So please join with us and say ‘thank you’ to the organisers of the numerous leagues and societies, both past and present, with a particular nod to the Finn who started the very first pool and darts leagues here, Osmo, who is no longer in Thailand, and to the Brit, Bernie, who has been, and still is at the heart of the Hua Hin Golf Society. Special mention also for Oil at Jungle Juice for her unwavering support of the Hua Hin Darts League, Martin who organises it now, and to Barry and Jill Moore who ran it for so many years. stories i’m right, you’re wrong By Roger Norwood An interesting piece in The Nation this week, entitled “How to wean yourself off the drug of partisan politics” by Pravit Rojanaphruk got me thinking about both Thailand’s political woes, as well as how similar the pattern is in many other countries. Most nations on earth have adopted the same adversarial system of politics, and it must be presumed that this happens naturally as it is seen so widely, with the norm being two large political parties who battle to gain power. There are exceptions to this of course, but even when there are lots of smaller political parties they will align themselves into two larger groups, and this is mainly because of the parliament

and congress systems, with both generally leading to just two main power blocks. The parliamentary system in particular leads to the unedifying spectacle seen frequently in the UK’s House Of Commons which becomes more like a school playground than an arena for serious political discussion, and this is also seen in other countries as well. My belief is that partisan politics and the two party system does not deliver the kind of government that the people really want, and also encourages the type of confrontation that is being seen right now in Thailand. It also has, unfortunately, seeped into the mindset of the people that there can be no middle ground or compromise - ‘you’re either with
us or against us’ is a commonly held view, and this surely cannot be the right way, particularly in Thailand with their Buddhist beliefs. When it leads to violent attacks and murders the political protagonists should be the first ones to step back from the brink and try to compromise. Fighting an opponent rarely results in anything other than a more entrenched position, and even ‘victory’ does not usually lead to anything except martyrs and dreams of revenge - as Jack Nicholson says in ‘Mars Attacks!’ - “Why can’t we all just get along?” (Answers on a postcard to the United Nations, 760 United Nations Plaza, New York, New York 10017, USA)

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth Don’t be ungrateful when you receive a gift. Proverbs are ‘short and expressive sayings, in common use, which are recognized as conveying some accepted truth or useful advice’. This example, also often expressed as ‘never look a gift horse in the mouth’, is as pertinent today as it ever was. As horses develop they grow more teeth and their existing teeth begin to change shape and project further forward. Determining a horse’s age from its teeth is a specialist task, but it can be done. This incidentally is also the source of another teeth/age related phrase long in the tooth. The advice given in the ‘don’t look...’ proverb is: when receiving a gift be grateful for what it is; don’t imply you wished for more by assessing its value. As with most proverbs the origin is ancient and unknown. We have some clues with this one however. The phrase appears in print in English in 1546, as “don’t look a given horse in the mouth”, in John Heywood’s A dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the prouerbes in the Englishe tongue, where he gives it as: “No man ought to looke a geuen hors in the mouth.” It is probable that Heywood obtained the phrase from a Latin text of St. Jerome, The Letter to the Ephesians, circa AD 400, which conatins the text ‘Noli equi dentes inspicere donati’ (Never inspect the teeth of a given horse). Where St Jerome got it from we aren’t eve likely to know. Heywood is an interesting character in the development of English. He was employed at the courts of Henry VIII and Mary I as a singer, musician, and playwright. His Proverbs is a comprehensive collection of those sayings known at the time and includes many that are still with us: - Many hands make light work - Rome wasn’t built in a day
- A good beginning makes a good ending and so on. These were expressed in the literary language of the day, as in “would yee both eat your cake, and have your cake?”, but the modern versions are their obvious descendents. We can’t attribute these to Heywood himself; he collected them from the literary works of the day and from common parlance. He can certainly be given the credit for introducing many proverbs to a wide and continuing audience, including one that Shakespeare later borrowed - All’s well that ends well. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
ambiguous Just when you think you’ve got to grips with the whole Ladyboy/transgender/transexual/bisexual thing, and have accepted the right of same sex couples to marry and to adopt chidren, society throws a curve ball. I don’t know how the concept of ‘gender neutral parenting’ has managed to slip beneath my radar for so long. Apparently it began in the 1970’s along with the rise in feminist issues, but appears to be having a bit of a 21st century comeback. According to one website the aim of gender neutral parenting (GNP) is to avoid pigeonholing a child into a specific gender based solely on their biological sex. The premise being that by not forcing any preconceived gender norms onto a child, they will ‘find their own comfort spot on the continuum we call gender.’ Clearly someone ate ‘Sociology Themes and Perspectives’ for breakfast on the day they wrote that, followed by Freud for lunch. Nevertheless there are some valid arguments for enabling children to explore their own interests and identity, without being led by tradition down the path of pink and dolls for girls, blue and trains for boys stereotype. Not least that they might realise their own potential to move into jobs which are more commonly the domain of the opposite sex. So far so good. But is it really a good idea for a very young child, maybe only a year old, to be offered the choice of boys or girls clothes for example? A recent case of GNP in the UK shows a two year old boy who has a wardrobe of dungaries and cowboy shirts, dresses and pink tutus at his disposal, and who allegedly chooses to wear whatever takes his fancy. Which is fine for ‘dressing up’ play - as most of us did as kids. But what happens when the child starts school and is allowed that same freedom of choice? Perhaps more to the point, we no longer live in a society which demands that women wear skirts to work, or set

From Hua Hin: Head north on Phet Kasem Road to Soi 58. Turn into Soi 58 and follow the one way Soi over the railway to the Klong Road traffic lights. Turn RIGHT, zero odometer, and travel 1.6 km to the fourth bridge (light blue colour) HHH sign and then follow combined mis-directions below. From Cha Am: Head towards Hua Hin on the Phet Kasem Road and make a both Macro and Toyota on the RIGHT Head back about 200m and turn LEFT in to Soi 6, under an archway and after crossing the railway, turn LEFT on to the Klong Road Travel 2.2km and cross the klong at the 5th proper road bridge (light blue colour) HHH sign. Then follow combined mis-directions below. Combined Mis-directions: After crossing the klong, immediately turn RIGHT
with Seven Eleven on the corner (HHH sign) and travel a further 2.1 km following twisty road passing Tippawan 1,2,3,4 and 5. When you reach the front entrance to Wat Samorprong turn LEFT on to dirt road (HHH sign) and proceed to parking is on the LEFT Hares: Mudman & Spook Hash Snacks: Mud Lady ON AFTER: Mr Burger 3 on the Klong Road close to the junction with Soi 6.
