cha am, THAILAND A picnic on the beach to celebrate graduating turned into a seaside nightmare for a group of nearly three hundred Thai students on Monday. Three girls died of drowning in the incident - one female student died at the scene while two others died as they were taken to hospital. A fourth was put in intensive care, along with five others who were taken to Hua Hin Hospital. The victims were all from Siam Dhurakit Technolocal College, police confirmed. The students were said to be preparing for a party in the evening, while 11 of them decided to go swimming in the sea, but encountered particularly strong waves. The alert went out at around 2.50pm on Monday 3rd March and the nine affected students dragged out of the sea by police and other helpers. The students were at the Naresuan Camp between Cha Am and Hua Hin for their celebrations. The bodies of the deceased have now been transferred to Bangkok for religious ceremonies and have been identified by the police as Ms. Ponnapa Boonchanta, Ms. Jirapon Namueangsap, and Ms. Monsicha Jaisuk, all believed to be just 18 years old. Students who survived the ordeal were also preparing to return to the capital as well. Our thoughts are with the families, friends and witnesses of this horrible accident, and hopefully this tragedy will make more people aware of the dangers the sea can present, as well as encouraging more to learn how to swim and how to handle situations like this. The sea can overwhelm even the most powerful swimmers but they are less likely to panic when in these type of incidents. Our thanks go to Jim Kelly for informing us of this news.

The editor has suggested that if no other writer comes along to fill my boots, it is likely that we will see the return of ‘Weird News’ to fill this space, but also that any suggestion from the readers would be considered. While we are on the subject of reader participation, I attended the most recent Hua Hin Car Boot Sale last Sunday, and while there were plenty of people there having a look round, the paltry number of people selling their cast offs must have left the organisers scratching their heads, as there was no charge for sellers this time around. Everyone has stuff they want to get rid of and this is the ideal way to do so. I spoke to the sellers that were there and they all were happy with the money they had taken and more importantly the space they had freed up at home. One final note to try and aid my now former employers (as in AWOL) for the future is to ask if there is anybody out there who wants to run a regular section devoted to a non-English
language? There was previously a French ‘pullout’, and given the large Scandinavian community, as well as the rapidly expanding Russian contingent AWOL is wondering whether someone from these groups wants a dedicated page or pages for local news and businesses. A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Have an inkling Have a vague intimation of; have a slight knowledge of. Clearly the understanding of the source of this little term is based on knowing what an inkling is. It sounds as though it might be something small, like a jot or a tittle. It also seems to exist in the same neck of the linguistic woods as the names of other minor sensations, like tingling or tickling. We can tingle or tickle, but we don’t inkle, so where did inkling derive from? These days, there isn’t much we can do with an inkling other than to have one. In the 13th century, when the word was coined, inklings weren’t had, they were heard. Inklings, like tinklings, were small sounds. Specifically, an inkling was an indistinct hearing of the use of one’s own name. This meaning is demonstrated in the earliest known use of the word, in the Alliterative Romance of Alexander the Great, circa 1400–50: “[Alexander] Herd a nyngkiling of his name, & naytis him [exerted himself] to ryse.” So, if you heard an inkling your senses were alerted to listening for something that might interest you and it is that sensation that has led to our current usage of the word. To be more accurate, in the 13th century you would have had a ninkling rather than an inkling. Inkling is one of those nouns that were originally spelled with an ‘n’ at the start of the word but later lost it in everyday speech. In this case, sometime in the 16th century, ‘a ninkling’ became ‘an inkling’. Other examples of this are ‘a napron’ and ‘a nadder’ [snake]. This reformation of words is called metanalysis and these ‘n’ examples of it are difficult to explain fully. There are examples of words going in the other direction, that is, adding an ‘n’; for example, ‘an ekename’ is now ‘a nickname’ (eke means also) and ‘an ewt’ is now ‘a newt’. Other examples, like ‘nangry’ where the originally spelled ‘angry’ gained an ‘n’ but then failed to become publicly accepted, show
how precarious such changes are. Curiously, the most commonly heard example of an English word losing its initial ‘n’ happened in France rather than England. The French obtained ‘orange’ via a route through several languages, ultimately from the Sanskrit ‘naranga’, and ‘une narange’ became ‘une arange’. By the time oranges appeared in England they were already oranges - there never was an English word noranges. On to more inventive metanalysis from Duck Soup: Chico: What is it that has a trunk but no key, weighs 2,000lbs and lives in a circus? Prosecutor: That’s irrelevant! Chico: A relephant. Hey, that’s the answer.

march march march March in the UK came in like a lamb this year, which is worrying. Because despite the cheerful sight of daffodils, whenever there is an unusually pleasant start to the month we are mindful of that old saying ‘when March comes in like a lion, it goes out like a lamb’, and fear that the reverse will happen. Another saying based on the month is ‘beware the Ides of March’. Although penned by Shakespeare in his interpretation of ‘Julius Caesar’, the basis for it can be traced back to the old Roman calendar, where the ‘Ides of March’ was the term used to denote the day corresponding to the 15th of the month. To add to the confusion March was also then the first month of the Roman year, and the first full moon of the new year would have been on the 15th. So it was a day for religious observances and superstition, rather like Loy Khratong still is in modern day Thailand. Except that where Loy Khratong marks the end of the rains, the Ides of March marked the end of ancient Romes’ new year celebrations. Unfortunately the Ides of March gained unwelcome notoriety when Julius Caesar was assassinated on that day in 44 BC. Having allegedly been warned by a soothsayer that it wasn’t a very good day on which to venture out, Caesar did so anyway. The rest is history. South East Asia has also had some bad - and good March 15ths. In Singapore on that day in 1986 the Hotel New World collapsed, killing 33 people. On the plus side in 1941 it marked the successful inaugural flight of Phillipine Airlines. Thailand has its’ fair share of superstitions and rites, and it is hard to imagine that the Land of Smiles would ever agree to an inaugural flight - or an inaugural anything come to that - on any particular date with which it had experienced problems in the past. The soothsayers, Shaman, and numerologists would surely never allow it

A subconscious thing, much like that tune which stays in your head all day. Or that impulsive need to keep on waving goodbye to someone on a train long after they are out of sight. Logic tells us that we can no longer be seen, while another old saying ‘Out of sight - out of mind’ takes over. So it is out of sight and out of mind until next week, when we will look more closely at Thai superstitions and beliefs.

They are in the Thailand Division 2 Central West Region and play their home matches at the Kai Tanarat Stadium in Pranburi, a little way south of Hua Hin, although there are rumours that a purpose built stadium is going to be constructed in Hua Hin itself.

MANCHESTER City fans have told Sunderland they put on a jolly good show on Sunday, for peasants. After the game City supporters posed for photos with scruffy Sunderland fans before giving them handfuls of chips and a pat on the head.
