hua hin, THAILAND With the third dry weekend in a row due to elections, April is not starting well for many, but this weekend does see the annual Hua Hin Cricket Sixes, now in it’s 19th year, being held at the Dusit Thani Resort, and running from 5th to 10th April, with over 250 players, including 8 former Australian Test greats and current Australian state players, with the well known names featuring Australian legend Craig McDermott along with his Test colleagues Shaun Graf, Dutchy Holland, Michael Taylor and Mick Lewis. The following weekend will be anything but dry in every respect, as the huge national celebration of the Thai New Year, Songkran will start to crank up; officially the holiday takes place from the 13th to 15th April, but as the first of these is a Sunday you can expect the town to start filling up in the week preceding this, and don’t be too surprised if this year in Hua Hin the festivities start earlier and go on longer. Due to this, and to give all of us here at AWOL a break, there will be no issue of AWOL next week on Friday 11th April, and all advertisers will have their adverts extended where applicable. But when one enterprising soul decided to emboss toilet paper with 24 carat gold motifs, it’s unsurprising that he raised a few eyebrows. The tissue is available to buy for an eye-watering 179 Euros (£148 or 7800 baht) per roll thanks to German designer Fritz Loibl. Luckily for toilet goers everywhere, or at least those with more money than sense, the bog roll can be shipped worldwide by his company Tissue Design. In an even more exciting turn of events, you can even choose to have your own customised design – perhaps your initials, or even the face of your least favourite politician. According to Mr Loibl most of his customers buy his products as a gift and others simply for decoration. The majority of buyers are those who own businesses that deal with luxury hotels or the sale of luxury goods.

That’s what reportedly happened when a man allegedly emailed an explicit photo to a recruitment agency. The message was found by a 25-year-old female caseworker who quickly notified the authorities, according to the the Dallas Observer. The man received an ‘obscene display or distribution’ ticket as a result. Texas Workforce Solutions helps people in the US state find jobs and would probably be advising the job-seeker not to include a picture of his crotch in future. A spokesman for local police confirmed the man who sent the email was still unemployed. ‘I think I know why he can’t find a job,’ he said.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Turn of phrase A distinctive spoken or written expression. ‘Turn of phrase’ is a commonplace but rather odd expression - in what sense can a phrase be ‘turned’? Ladies are, or at least used to be, sometimes described as having ‘well-turned’ legs/thighs/ankles, but that derives from an allusion to the symmetry and precision of wood turning, which hardly seems appropriate for an abstract entity like a phrase. What is a phrase anyway? Well, there’s no exact definition and so it depends on who you ask. Had you been around in 1530 when the word ‘phrase’ was coined, you would have been wise not to have asked the language scholar John Palsgrave. It was he who first put the word into print but, confusingly, gave two differing examples of its meaning. Palsgrave’s aim was to help Englishmen to learn to speak French and to that end he published Lesclarcissement de la Langue Francoyse, the first grammar of the French language. Palsgrave illustrated the meaning of the word ‘phrase’ by giving examples of phrases in English with their French equivalents. “Whan all is doone and sayd, pour tout potaige - a phrasis.” In that illustration he was using the meaning of the word as we now understand it, that is, ‘a small group or collocation of words expressing a single notion; a common or idiomatic expression’. That ‘collection of words’ definition of ‘phrase’ is hardly unambiguous and could just as well be used for ‘idiom’, ‘saying’ or ‘expression’. There are also many other linguistic terms that, while they have specialised uses, can all lay claim to being phrases - ‘proverbs’, ‘adages’, ‘maxims’, ‘clichés’ and so on. Added to that, Palsgrave gave us an entirely different definition of what Tudor gentry understood by the word ‘phrase’, that is, not words at all but a ‘manner or style of speech or writing’. In the same French/English
grammar he remarked on “The differences of phrasys betwene our tong and the frenche tong”. He went on to explain “The phrasys of our tong and theyrs differeth”. By that he meant, not that the English and French use different expressions (which even the most untutored student would surely have known) but that the French have a different manner and style of speaking to the English. That ‘style of speaking or writing’ meaning gives us a lead in explaining how a phrase can be said to be ‘turned’. Before the advent of printing the beauty of written texts was judged not only on their content but also on the quality of the writer’s calligraphy - much as Japanese Haiku is appreciated today. The word ‘style’ derives from the tool used for writing, the stylus, and to the mediaeval mind writing style was as much about the craft of calligraphy as it was about the ideas conveyed in the text. An early handwritten example of Chaucer’s Clerk’s Tale, circa 1386, used ‘style’ with that meaning: Therfore Petrak writeth this storie, which with heigh stile he enditeth. So, a phrase was a style of speaking or writing, and style meant beauty of expression. We can now interpret a fine ‘turn of phrase’ as analogous to a skilfully crafted piece of wood turned on a lathe. John Dryden referred to the ‘turning’ of words in this sense in The Satires of Decimus Junius Juvenalis, 1693: Had I time, I cou’d enlarge on the Beautiful Turns of Words and Thoughts; which are as requisite in this, as in Heroique Poetry. Benjamin Franklin - first with many things - appears to have been the first to use the precise expression ‘turn of phrase’ in his Letters, 1779: A new version [of the Bible], in which, preserving the sense, the turn of phrase and manner of expression should be modern.

...and on that bombshell Mention the ‘Top Gear’ BBC TV programme and there is always a mixed reaction. Often of the ‘can’t stand that Clarkson guy’ variety. But I find it an innocently entertaining insight into ‘boys and their toys’ syndrome. Not to mention there are usually some very nice motors worth adding to the wish list. Except for when the boys venture abroad to undertake those crazy challenges. Then things can get quite hairy. Having survived a venture into the Chernobyl exclusion zone, the team then went to Myanmar, (which if you don’t mind I will call Burma, old habits die hard), where they bought three battered old lorries, and proceeded to rattle through Shan State and into Thailand on a mission. For those who haven’t seen the programme, the mission was to build a bridge over the River Kwai, and then to drive the three clapped out lorries over it. Part one of the mission accomplished - albeit over the wrong river, and with plenty of help from the locals - our heros stood surveying their completed bamboo masterpiece. Which is where one small word incensed some of the great British public, proving just how ambiguous our language can be. Viewing the length of the completed bridge, Clarkson declared that there was a slope on it. Which indeed, in terms of the construction, there was. Unfortunately a local was walking across the bridge at the time. By now you might be as puzzled as I was about the furore which followed. Or you may be more worldly wise. Anyway it transpires that the word ‘slope’ can also be used as a derogatory term to describe any Asian person who resembles a ‘red’ from the Vietnam era.

Admittedly the word ‘jigaboo’ does have a kind of derogatory ring to it, even before checking the dictionary. But should blame be attached to the BBC for every insulting word which finds its’ way into their programmes? Especially when many of us probably haven’t been aware of the meanings in the first place? Certainly, had there been no complaints made to ‘Auntie Beeb’ I would still be blissfully unaware of any nasty connotations attached to the two words. But any debate of course always, and rightly, focuses on the intent behind their use. Nevertheless the definitions of these and many other derogatory terms continue to appear in our dictionaries. It’s a strange old world. So for this week at least our ‘word of the week’ has already been taken care of.

As if that were not enough, only days later another popular BBC TV series ‘Jonathan Creek’ also crossed the boundaries of political correctness with the use of the word ‘jigaboo’ in a game of Scrabble. Despite a score of 17 the word again incensed the great British public, because it is another derogatory term. This time used to describe people with very black skin.

LIVERPOOL fans are on the brink of regaining their status as the most annoying in England. Once the most feared topic of conversation in Europe, Liverpool have had their sense of smugness eroded for the last 24 years.
