hua hin, THAILAND A little publicised but very important fact is that seven children die every day in Thailand from drowning. Only last month a terrible tragedy in Cha Am claimed the lives of three teenagers in this manner. Learning to swim should be a priority for all children and adults to lessen the chance of this happening, and particularly in coastal resorts like Hua Hin and Cha Am, and with so many swimming pools around. Many parents will try (and succeed) in teaching thier children the basics, but often there is a need for professional help from an internationally accredited Swimming Teacher, and we are lucky enough to have one in the shape of Matt at the Swim Hua Hin Swimming School. They offer swimming classes to suit all ages - programs based on progressive teaching methods for babies, toddlers, children and adults that start from only 200 baht per lesson (groups of up to five) or more for individual lessons. Recently however, the school has had a problem in that the pool they were renting to hold their classes is no longer available, and they are appealing to the readers of AWOL to help them find a new venue. If you have or know of a conveniently sited pool, preferably somewhere between sois 6 and 108 and the nearer the centre the better, and ideally rectangular between 15 and 25 metres long, with depths ranging from 1 to 1.8 metres, and which would be free every day for between two to four hours, Matt would like to talk to you about a rental agreement for him to be able to continue the valuable service he provides. A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.....A turn up for the books An unexpected piece of good fortune. Since the 1820s or so, the term ‘turn-up’ has been used to mean ‘a surprise; an example of good fortune’. The reference was to cards or dice, which are ‘turned up’ by chance. Specifically, the ‘turn up’ was referred to in the game of cribbage. ‘Turn up’ was defined by John Camden Hotten in 1859, in A Dictionary of Modern Slang, Cant and Vulgar Words: Turn up: An unexpected slice of luck. That’s straightforward enough, but why would a turn up be ‘for the books’? Books can be cooked, one can go by them and you can be in someone’s bad books, but why would you turn up for them? The phrase was originally ‘a turn up for the book’. At 18th and 19th century English race meetings when bets were placed the punter’s name and wager were written down in a notebook. Not unreasonably, this process was called ‘making a book’. If a race was won by a horse that the ‘bookmaker’ had no record of in his book, he had a ‘turn up’ and kept all the wagered money. Camden Hotten was good enough to come to our aid again with his extended definition of ‘turn up’: Among sporting men bookmakers are said to have a turn up when an unbacked horse wins. So, ‘a turn up for the book’ translates as a stroke of good luck for the bookmakers. The earliest example found of the expression in print is from a report, in the Leeds Intelligencer newspaper, of the success of a horse called Blackdown at the Doncaster races in August 1863: A rare turn-up for the book-makers, the majority of whom had never written Blackdown’s name in their books. A bonus related origin this week is Come up trumps To complete something well or successfully, especially in circumstances in which it isn’t expected. ‘Come up trumps’ is a variant of the older phrase ‘turn
up trumps’, which has been in use since the early 17th century. The word trump in this context is a corruption of triumph, which was the name of a card game, similar to whist, that was played in the 17th century. The preacher Hugh Latimer referred to it in his 1st Sermon on the Card, 1529: “The game that wee wyll playe at, shall bee called the triumphe... Lette therefore euery Christian manne and woman playe at these cardes.” Encouraging card playing is hardly Christian orthodoxy these days, nor was it in 1529, but then Latimer was far from orthodox in his religious views - which resulted in him being burned at the stake. Shakespeare used card playing imagery when alluding to the game in Anthony and Cleopatra, 1606. He says that “the queen, [Cleopatra] whose heart I thought I had” ... “now lost, she has pack’d cards with Caesar and false-play’d my glory unto an enemy’s triumph.” In triumph, as in whist, the trump suit was selected at random by the ‘cutting’ of the deck. Trump cards temporarily outranked other cards. Selecting the right suit to match one’s hand was an advantage in the game and so turning up trumps became synonymous with success. It was, and still is, bad form to cut the deck without first shuffling the cards. Robert Burton, in his The anatomy of melancholy, 1621, was outraged that: “They turned up trumpe, before the Cards were shuffled.” By the 18th century turn up trumps had begun to be used in its figurative sense, that is, with no direct reference to card playing. It is recorded that way in Grose’s Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, 1785: “Something may turn up trumps, something lucky may happen.” Incidentally, Shakespeare was also the first to refer to a pack of cards as a deck - in Henry VI, Part III, 1592: “But whiles he thought to steale the single Ten, The King was slyly finger’d from the Deck.”

hot(mail) under the collar This weeks’ THAB has to be fairly brief, and rattled off in double quick time. The reason being my problems with cyberspace. For once I can’t even blame my IT woes on Hulls’ own independent telephone company, Kingston Communications, because I freed myself from their local landline and broadband monopoly some time ago when 3G became a viable and cheaper option. No, the problems are partly of my own making. Because from day one in my e mailing history I have resolutely stuck with one e mail provider. There have been occasional half hearted forays into alternative addresses of course, but none lasted. Hotmail had become so familiar and easy to navigate there seemed little point in maintaining two separate e mail accounts. Many of you will now be nodding sagely. You have been wise enough to double up e mail accounts as a safeguard. And now that mine is floating around in cyberspace, together with its’ contact list and personal files, I can see why! But as our use of the internet has developed over the last decade or so, the scope of what we can actually do with it has also increased. There is often talk amongst expats and ex expats, about what they miss from the home country, or what they miss about Thailand, depending on where they are looking at things from. These discussions also extend to the most noticeable changes when they do return home, and over recent years one of the most significant changes has to be our dependance on the internet for everyday tasks. Even in Hull we shop, bank, sell and complete surveys online. We read newspapers and place advertisements and announcements in them online. We can also order our prescriptions and sign petitions online, all the time of course giving out our e mail addresses. From 2021 we will even be completing the UK census online.

A man was fighting for his life last night after being seriously assaulted by a crowd of spectators on day three of the US Masters at Augusta. Phil Hamilton, 38, of Nutsack, Oregon was attacked in what police described as a ‘spontaneous, frenzied battering’ after shouting the words ‘get in the hole’ as Fred Couples chipped to the green at the 5th. Doctors have been battling to stabilise his condition after he underwent two emergency operations to repair a punctured lung and to remove an eight iron. Hazel Irvine, the BBC presenter, witnessed the incident as she prepared a live report for the broadcaster. “Everything was fine and peaceful. The ball landed at the edge of the green and started rolling. This man at the front of the crowd then shouted ‘get in the hole’ and looked around smugly to show how clever he’d been and to see where the TV mics were.”
