hua hin, THAILAND Temperatures in Hua Hin and surrounding areas are set to continue at close to boiling point (100˚ Fahrenheit) and possibly higher as the sun will be at its closest point to Thailand and directly above it on Sunday. While temperatures have actually been recorded officially as close to the annual average for this time of year, the ‘real feel’, a combination of the actual temperature and humidity have reached 45˚ Celcius (113˚ Fahrenheit) at peak times. While everybody needs to take care in such high temperatures, foreigners, the elderly and children should be particularly careful, as there can be a real threat of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include giddiness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath and mental confusion. When the body temperature reaches 41°C or higher, the sufferer will have convulsion or become unconscious; and this is heat stroke. Immediately, the body temperature must be brought down and first aid be given, or else the sufferer’s life will be in great danger. To avoid the risk of heat stroke a few precautionary measures should be taken; Wear light-coloured, loose and air permeable clothing to reduce heat absorption and promote heat loss from sweating; Bring and drink plenty of fluid to prevent dehydration; Avoid drinks containing caffeine (e.g. coffee and tea) or alcohol, because they can speed up water loss from the body through the urinary system; Do not engage in prolonged activities such as hiking or trekking, as heat, sweating and exhaustion place additional demands on one’s physique; Perform outdoor activities in the morning or evening, if possible; Do not stay inside a parked vehicle; Seek medical advice if feeling unwell.

weird NEWS poland Thief swallows crazy amount of stolen goods to avoid prison A light-fingered thief took extreme action in an attempt to avoid being put behind bars when he swallowed all of his ill-gotten gains. Dariusz Piotrowski was arrested after fleeing a house he is suspected of burgling in the Polish capital of Warsaw. The 39-year-old was taken into custody and began complaining about stomach pains before an X-ray revealed where he had disposed of all the incriminating evidence. He swallowed six watches, a fork, a spoon, cigarette lighters and other objects before he was picked up by police. ‘Officers lost sight of him briefly after chasing him, but then found him hiding in the bushes of a garden of a nearby house,’ said a police spokesman. ‘It was while he was crouched down in the shrubbery that he probably took the opportunity to try to mask his crime by eating the objects he had stolen.’ Piotrowski said his unusual ability to swallow different objects had helped him throughout his life of crime. The case featured in a textbook by the Polish Anaesthetics’ Society.
france Police discover ‘missing’ child only existed on Facebook Police searching for a ‘missing’ child discovered the youngster only ever existed on Facebook. Detectives thought they were racing against time after receiving a report that two-year-old Chayson Basinio had vanished from a supermarket car park. A kidnapping inquiry was opened and a local lake was dredged, with police fearing the worst, it was reported. However, days later – as they prepared to tell the family to expect the worst – they could find no trace of their existence in real-life. Despite the ‘Basinio’ family having full Facebook profiles, they appeared to be completely imaginary. French police are now questioning the woman who made the initial report about the missing child. Public prosecutor Eric Mazaud said: ‘The inquiry for kidnapping and sequestration has obviously been redirected into one of reporting an imaginary crime or offence. ‘It [the inquiry] was long and complicated but we can now say that the young Chayson has never existed and nor have his father or mother.’

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Keep the ball rolling Maintain a level of activity in and enthusiasm for a project. The American expression ‘keep the ball rolling’ was preceded by the similar, now archaic, British phrase ‘keep the ball up’. They had much the same meaning, the earlier one alludes to keeping a ball in the air, that is, conveying the notion of keeping an activity going. This was used figuratively by the radical social philosopher Jeremy Bentham, in a letter to George Wilson in 1781, referring to his efforts to keep a conversation going: “I put a word in now and then to keep the ball up.” Bentham may be long dead but continues to be radical. He didn’t opt for the traditional coffin, buried six feet under, but willed that his body be stuffed, mounted and put on display. It is exhibited in a cabinet at University College, London (see right, although the severed head has now been removed). Many students at the University in the 1960s took the opportunity to open the cabinet doors to see Bentham peering back through the waxy glass - quite disconcerting. The ‘keep the ball rolling’ version of the phrase owes its origin and popularity to the US presidential election of July 1840. That election is widely regarded as introducing all the paraphernalia of present-day elections, that is, campaign songs, advertising slogans and publicity stunts of all kinds. The unpopular incumbent President Martin Van Buren was pitted against Whig candidates, General William Harrison, a war hero who had fought against the Shawnee Indians at Tippecanoe, and John Tyler. The Whig candidates revelled in a folksy ‘cider-drinking, logcabin, men of the people’ image and adopted the first known political slogan - ‘Tippecanoe and Tyler, too’. A song of the same name was considered to have sung Harrison into the presidency: Don’t you hear from every quarter, quarter, quarter, Good news and true,

These weren’t, as we might expect, dance parties that celebrated his famous victory, but ten-foot diameter globes made of tin and leather, which were pushed from one campaign rally to the next. His supporters were invited to attend rallies and push the ball on to the next town, chanting ‘keep the ball rolling’.

fish out of water If you think Hua Hins’ expats are sometimes inclined to be a little eccentric, think again. Holmefirth - a small town in West Yorkshire - takes some beating. If you are now thinking that you don’t know the place you are probably wrong again. Holmefirth was home to that popular old British TV series ‘Last of the Summer Wine,’ which is still repeated everywhere. Thailand included. The main characters, Compo, Clegg and Foggy, were the epitome of English eccentricity, or at least the Yorkshire version of it, (which is considered by many to be even more whacky.) They were also of course fictional characters. Or were they?
Now a real life resident of Holmefirth seems to have carried on the tradition begun by Compo and Co. The retired, and possibly very bored, engineer, who shall remain nameless, spent years perfecting an Aquatic Perambulator for his pet Malcolm, a goldfish. It seems that Malcolm looked bored, so the caring owner decided to build a device which would allow Malcolm - in his bowl - to be pushed around town for a change of scenery without the water in the bowl slopping around. And anyone who has ever tried to transport a goldfish bowl complete with water and fish from A to B will appreciate just how useful that could be.

So Malcolm enjoyed trips around town and visits to the pub, and lived to the grand old age of 12. You really couldn’t make it up could you? Just Google ‘aquatic perambulator’ to check, as I had to, that reports of Malcolms’ perambulations weren’t dated April 1st. Meanwhile back at the ranch on the other side of Yorkshire, while Hua Hinians either avoided or endured their annual Songkran soaking, Hull City Football Club fought its’ way through to the Wembley Cup Final for the first time in its’ long and chequered history. The delight and to some supporters astonishment - of the semi-final victory only marred by the prospect of having to pay for a second trip to London for the final on May 17th. No doubt the coach and rail companies will be rubbing their hands together in glee. Our word this week, for no particular reason at all, is entablature, meaning the upper part of a classical building which is supported by columns. A short trip to the Colonnade will give a very vague idea of the concept.
