hua hin prepares for coronation day audience
hua hin, THAILAND For anyone who has been wondering what all the roadworks, flags, lights and other decorations are all about around Hua Hin, this coming Monday, 5th May is your answer, as this is Coronation Day in Thailand, and His Majesty the King is holding a special audience at Rajapracha Samakhom Pavilion inside Klai Kangwon Palace. The audience will start from 10am to the royal family and civil servants, and thousands of Thais are expected to line the streets near the palace. Twelve large LED screens will be installed on Phetkasem Road so wellwishers can watch the audience, while the event will be broadcast live on national television. His Majesty the King’s motorcade will leave Piemsuk Palace for the pavilion inside the palace via Phetkasem Road to give all Thais a chance to greet His Majesty, following the same route that was used for the audience on His Majesty the King’s birthday on December 5 last year, said Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Veera Sriwattanatrakul. Mr Veera also urged no political activities on May 5 and no sales of fireworks in the area where the activity will be held. Coronation Day marks the day in 1950 when His Majesty the King was officially crowned, although His Majesty’s reign actually began on 9th June 1946, making him the world’s longest-serving current head of state and the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history, having served for nearly 68 years. Housebound Charity Pierce, who weighs in at 56.4st, needs to lose 20st before her wedding so she can have a life-saving gastric bypass operation. The 38-year-old from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has already reduced her calorie intake from 10,000 to just 1,200 per day in the hope she can enjoy her first dance with fiancé Tony Saur, 22. Charity said: ‘I’m determined not to have to get married at home – I want to be able to walk up the aisle. We both love country music so I plan to wear a wedding dress, cowboy boots and cowgirl hat and Tony will be in jeans and cowboy boots.’ Doctors have warned Charity, who has been housebound since 2001, that without significant weight loss she could die. She said: ‘I’m worried about having a heart attack or a stroke and dying in my sleep. My dream goal is to be 14st and get married to my fiancé. I don’t want much – I just want to have a life.’ Charity recently discovered after doctors weighed her on a set of heavy-duty scales that she was the heaviest living woman on record, beating Pauline Potter who weighed 45.9st in 2011 but last year shed 7st. After the weigh-in, Charity said: ‘Seeing that figure
appear on the scales was such a shock. I didn’t expect that. It was devastating.’ Before she started her diet in February, 2014, Charity would eat cereal, two pizzas, two big sandwiches, five doughnuts, two plates of lasagne, a Kit-Kat chocolate bar, a big bowl of popcorn, and Pop Tarts in one day. But now with help from Tony she eats three yogurts, a banana with peanut butter, mixed vegetables, grilled chicken, vegetable pizza, and hummus with crackers. Tony said: ‘Charity’s size has never been an issue for me….I think she will be a beautiful bride. I do worry that she is going to die early but I try to support her to lose weight. I feel confident she will lose weight and have the operation.’

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Minced oath Minced Oaths - what they are and why they were formed The English, being a restrained lot, have a long list of euphemistic phrases, many of which became part of the language before it spread to other parts of the world. The root cause of these is a wish to communicate without being explicit. This is something the English are particularly fond of, hence their long tradition of double-entendre comedy. Euphemisms aren’t all from the distant past though. For every Shakesperian ‘beast with two backs’ there’s a 20th century ‘knee trembler’. Minced oaths are a sub-group of euphemisms used to avoid swearing when expressing surprise or annoyance. If you hit your thumb with a hammer when great aunt Edith is in the room what do you say? It’s probably going to be a minced oath. Shakespeare might have resorted to ‘gadzooks’ (God’s hooks - referring to the nails in the cross), we might try ‘shoot’ or ‘freaking heck’. They are usually, although not exclusively, religious in nature and date from the days when it wasn’t acceptable to use the name of God, Jesus or other religious notables in everyday speech. To mince your words, or mince matters, means to choose words so as not to offend anyone. Some example are ‘Jiminy Cricket’ (Jesus Christ), ‘dagnamit’ (God damn it’), ‘for Pete’s sake’ (for St. Peter’s sake). It’s interesting that, while we continue to generate new euphemisms, new minced oaths are few and far between. Perhaps that’s because, while there are still taboos about discussing death, disability, homosexuality etc, the restrictions on swearing out loud when surprised or annoyed have slackened somewhat. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
a voluminous portion A change around this week with our ‘word of the week’ first on the agenda. The word is fascicle, which can be used in more than one context. Either to refer to a bundle of structures, such as nerve or muscle fibres, or to mean a separately published instalment of a book or other printed work. It is the latter definition which is relevant, as we take a look at the Oxford English Dictionary. Not the concise version (which is still affordable) but the full work in book form. First published in 10 volumes between 1884 and 1928, the ‘OED’ as it is known aims to provide the origins and history of words, as well as their meanings and how those meanings may have changed over the years. A mammoth task far beyond the original expectations of its’ huge team of compilers, there was to be another 61 years before the second edition appeared fully in print in 1989. This time in 20 volumes, or ‘fascicles’. That second edition is the one still available in print today, at a cost of around £750, (about 39,000 baht) and it is very likely that it will never be followed by a 3rd edition in book form. Even in 2010 it was estimated that the 3rd edition would take another 10 years to complete, but the revision is still going on with no end in sight. Such is the extent and complexity of the English language that we can expect to see a fully updated version of the OED online only from now on. Easier to revise and update. Easier and cheaper for readers to access of course. But what a shame that the original concept of a fully comprehensive English dictionary, from which no word is ever deleted, should be consigned forever to an online format by one of the very things which has added so much to our language - technology. On to lighter things. Or maybe not so light really, because we are talking about our recommended intake of 400 grammes of fruit and veg a day. Or at least that was the amount recommended by ‘experts’ in the UK a few years ago. Now the ‘experts’ are saying that we should be eating 7, or perhaps even as much as 10, portions of fruit and veg per day to gain maximum health benefits. Which at the expertly recommended portion size of 80 grammes would, by my reckoning, be at least 560 grammes of the green, red and orange stuff each day. Not that I have anything against the consumption of fruit and vegetation, but it would be nice to have a bit of room left to eat some meat, fish and cheese in between times. Not to mention the odd bar of chocolate of course. Anyway in the interests of research I did a quick calculation of the potential cost of 7 a day. A factor

which doesn’t seem to concern the experts. And found that in one popular UK supermarket a modest selection of 7 fairly inexpensive fruits costs the equivalent of about 140 baht. ‘So what?’ I hear you say, and of course you would be right. You could wander down the Night Market, or pop out to your local soi vendor, and buy a selection of 7 fruits for that, but they would be all freshly prepared for you, popped in a plastic bag, with a handy little stick and a dip on the side. Your 7 a day ready to go, and one of the advantages of living in a country where eating is far more important than boring old Health and Safety.

liverpool, england Premier League clubs have convened a hasty meeting following last Sunday’s match at Anfield between Liverpool and Chelsea, to discuss the immediate conversion of their stadiums to bus parks. A spokesman for the Premier League said, ‘Clearly the way forward for all clubs in the league is to park buses on the pitch, because the revenue generated from the parking fees clearly outstrips what the clubs receive from the spectators every week, and as long as the buses are painted in the team colours the clubs feel that there will still be thousands who will turn up to see the buses.’ He added, ‘There is also the added bonus that parked bus fanciers tend to be less aggressive so the policing fees for every game will be drastically reduced, and local residents will be less inconvenienced on match days.’ Some clubs including Stoke City and West Ham successfully tested the

concept earlier in the season, but the mastery and driving skills displayed by Jose Mourinho’s side seems to have finally won the rest of the clubs over.
