hua hin, THAILAND AWOL has covered news of the charitable efforts made by both Thai and foreign people in the area before, and this week sees yet another initiative to help the needy of the area, as the Power Of Love Church has announced its ambitious plan to build a children’s home to help the most disadvantaged youngsters from this region. There are various challenges facing these children, whether they have lost parents or other family members through to a lack of food, medical care, adequate housing, sanitation, and very importantly an education aimed at pulling them out of poverty or subsistence living. Some of them are at risk of falling prey to dangerous people due to pressures on their parents’ or guardians’ financial needs. The aim is to provide for an initial 25 children so as to keep it personal. The home will be structured and run as a family with a Thai couple serving as foster Mom and foster Dad. Older children, in addition to regular school, will be given the opportunity to learn a trade from a variety of possibilities connected to the employment opportunities of the future in Thailand. Thanks to some donations, initial payment has been made on a plot of land ideally located in the centre of Khao Takiab. The Power of Love Church now hopes for further donations so as to begin construction of the home as soon as possible. The Church was founded in 2010 and holds Sunday services, which are currently held in a reception hall at the Hua Hin Hilton Hotel, as well as regularly distributing food and other essentials to the poorest families in the area. weird NEWS usa Bronies, the grown men obsessed with My Little Pony Most kids loved My Little Ponies when they were little – they were pastel and they were ponies so, really, it was inevitable. Of course, we all eventually grew out of them and onto Take That/Little Mix/Ben from down the road. But apparently not everyone does. A new documentary, which was shown at the recent Tribeca Film Festival, shines a light on the slightly unsettling subculture that is Bronies – grown men obsessed with the toy-turnedcartoon My Little Pony. A Brony Tale follows Ashleigh Ball, the voice of characters Rainbow Dash and Applejack, as she meets her devoted male followers. Ball admits a ‘pervert alarm’ went off when she started getting emails from the cartoon’s adult male fans, but has come to understand how important it is to people’s lives after her friend, Canadian filmmaker Brent Hodge, decided to make a documentary about the phenomenon. My Little Pony fans featured in the documentary include Steven, who likes to go shopping for the pastel ponies in toy stores but admits he often gets mistaken for a ‘big old man child’ or, worse, a ‘paedophile’ by people who jump to the ‘worst-case scenario’. Then there’s DustyKatt (we’re honestly not making this up) who is a handlebar-moustached welder by day, My
Little Pony fan by night. He asks what’s wrong with preferring a child’s cartoon show to chugging beer and riding motorcycles? It’s a rhetorical question, we think. And US Army veteran Brian who says the little ponies helped him through hard times when he returned home from fighting in Iraq. His favourite character is Princess Celestia: ‘Any adult, who has really gone through it all and been really thoughtful and really caring and anything like that, is going to be a Princess Celestia.’ There are now estimated to be around 3million Bronies around the world, who all live by the My Little Pony mantra ‘friendship is magic’ and range from 14 to 57 years old. 85 per cent are male and 84 per cent are heterosexual. They enjoy watching episodes of the cartoon, collecting MLP memorabilia and attending Brony conventions like the BronyCon, which attracts over 8000 enthusiastic fans. The documentary seeks to get to the bottom of why these men have become so enthralled with the cartoon ponies. Filmmaker Hodge believes the Bronies get a sense of ‘community’ and ‘friendship’ from the cartoon. One fan who sports a My Little Pony outfit in the film, says: ‘I’ve tried myself to figure out why I love the show so much and honestly I can’t come up with a great answer.’

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Take umbrage To be displeased or offended by the actions of others. There doesn’t seem to be much we can do with umbrage other than to take it, that is, become displeased - the word is no longer used in any other context. What is umbrage exactly? It sounds like some form of distasteful patent medicine. Step back to the 15th century and umbrage didn’t mean displeasure. The word was inherited into English from the Latin ‘umbra’, meaning shade. Umbrage came to be used in English to mean shade or shadow, or the foliage of trees which cause shadows; for example, this piece from John Lydgate’s 1426 translation of De Guileville’s Pilgrimage of the life of man: ...my vysage whiche is clowded with vmbrage, ‘Taking umbrage’, that is, sitting under a shady tree, had then no negative associations, as is made clear in Sir Thomas Elyot’s The image of gouernance, 1540: The sayd trees gaue a commodyous and plesant vmbrage. Over time, the figurative use of umbrage to mean displeasure evolved, probably from the simple association of darkness with gloomy thoughts. In that meaning, umbrage was first said to be given rather than taken, as this example from Sir Nathaniel Brent’s 1620 translation of the Historie of the council of Trent shows: He... therefore besought them to take away all those words that might give him any Vmbrage. The shade/disfavour metaphor is made explicit in this piece from Sir Robert Naunton’s Fragmenta regalia, 1635: On the fall of the Duke he stood some yeers in umbrage, and without imployment. The first record of anyone taking umbrage is in Lord Fountainhall’s [Chronological Notes on] The decisions of the Lords of Council and Session, 1680:

Rowling picked up on these associations when choosing the name of the unpleasant character Professor Umbridge in the Harry Potter series. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
technology overload April and May are busy months for Public holidays this year, both in Thailand and England. As you poor souls out there face another alcohol free Holy Day on Tuesday 13th, here in the UK our Early Spring bank holiday on May 5th, coming as it did only two weeks after Easter, provided yet another opportunity to get those paintbrushes out, or, weather permitting, to fire up the barbecues and crack open the tinnies. But with only another three weeks to our next (proper) Spring Bank Holiday on May 26th, many of us spent our early Spring break weekend glued to the World Snooker Championship, which of course always takes place in Gods’ Own County of Yorkshire. And without giving away any secrets (by the time you read this you will know who won anyway) what a final it was. But am I the only one who finds the ever more sophisticated computer aided viewing of this event just a little annoying now? We know that technology is expanding our vocabulary almost daily, but it is also being increasingly used to supposedly enhance our enjoyment of some televised sports events. To be fair some of it can help. That computer enhanced cue ball - shown half in black and half in yellow really does illustrate well the spin on the white. The superimposed white line showing the likely route of the cue ball before it even sets off is just about bearable, (although uncannily accurate - how do the ‘experts’ do that? Oh yes of course, they have been World Champions themselves.) What really bugs me is those constant slow motion repeats of shots. Good or bad, there it goes again. The white ball meandering slowly towards the corner pocket and hovering tantalisingly on the edge before disappearing. The black rattling around before deciding to stay in play. All preceded and followed by a visual
