another drugs gang nabbed in hua hin
hua hin, THAILAND Last Saturday, 10th May, Thai police swooped on a gang who had been selling drugs in Hua Hin and arrested them. The gang had been operating out of the Caddy Shack bar in Soi Selekan, and those arrested included the owner, Mrs. Jintana, 45, also known as Tookta, Mr Abraham Kamara, 32, a Sierra Leone citizen, and five lady boys aged between 20 and 27, some or all of whom worked at the bar. The arrests were carried out by Pol. Col. Chatchai Rienmek, vice director of Prachaup Khiri Kan provincial police, Pol Col. Chinnavorn Jieasakul, director of the narcotics suppression bureau and the head of operations, Pol.Lt.Col Patcharapong Lopart, deputy director along with other officers. They recovered bags of crystal meth, cocaine, marijuana, a Toyota Fortuner, two motorbikes, gold chains, and 3 golden rings found in the possession of those arrested. The police officers secretly purchased drugs for 25,000 baht after they were tipped off that drugs were being sold in the entertainment area. Pol Col Chatchai said that their investigation revealed that Mrs. Jintana purchased the drugs from Mr. Abraham, who lives in Sukumvit Soi 93 in Bangkok, and transferred money to his Thai wife’s bank account. The lady boys then sold the drugs to tourists in the area. A warrant for the arrest of Mr Abraham’s wife has also been issued, as well as a request to freeze the assets of all involved. According to reports, all of those arrested have confessed to their crimes, and are now awaiting the full weight of Thai law, which is notoriously harsh on drug offenders. There have been several notable arrests for serious crimes, particularly drugs related, in Hua Hin in recent months, but it is unclear whether this is simply better policing or indicates an increase in these types of crime in the area - without meaningful crime figures being made available locally we must hope its the former.

weird NEWS singapore 6ft snake emerges from toilet to bite housewife A Singapore housewife who felt a sharp pain in her thigh while on the toilet was horrified to discover a six-foot python had emerged from the toilet bowl and sunk its teeth into her leg. Noraslinda Asat, 34, was in the ground-floor toilet of her home when she heard a bubbling noise and felt the bite. After several attempts at grabbing the snake, she pulled it off. Mrs Asat estimated that the snake was 6ft long and as thick as her husband’s forearm. After a short time in hospital, where she received an injection for the bite, she was discharged, but Mrs Asat has revealed the real damage is psychological. She is so traumatised that she is afraid to use the toilet in her home, preferring to go to public ones instead. Officers from Animal Concerns Research and Education Society were unable to find the snake after being called to the scene. A friend of Mr and Mrs Asat later saw the snake in a manhole but was also unable to catch it. This is the second time a snake has been found at the Asat home. Mrs Asat’s mother also saw a snake in the toilet bowl but it slithered back inside when it saw her.

Disgusted diner Mai Liang was halfway through her fish and squid rings dish at a restaurant when she discovered a particularly ‘rubbery’ piece was actually a contraceptive. Events took another bizarre twist when the owner of the restaurant in Anhui province, China, grabbed the condom and swallowed it. ‘It was disgusting. My first horrific thought was: Is it used?’ explained Ms Liang. ‘Imagine my horror when I turned it over with my fork and it turned out to be a contraceptive.’ Restaurant boss Yi Ze Teng says she ate the condom to stop the argument with her customer and has accused the diners of putting it in their food to get a free meal. ‘They said if I ate the condom, they would leave the matter, so I swallowed it,’ Ms Ze Teng revealed. The diners have hired a lawyer in a bid to secure a compensation package.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... As daft as a brush Very foolish. On the face of it, brushes wouldn’t seem to be any more daft than anything else. As the source of the expression isn’t obvious, various suggestions have been put forward as to what form of brush is being referred to; for instance: - The phrase originated as ‘as soft as a brush’ and the brush is the tail of a fox. This is plausible in that ‘soft’ is a northern English term for stupid, and foxes tails are in fact quite soft to the touch. - The brushes in the expression are the boys that were employed in the 18th/19th centuries to climb inside chimneys to sweep them. The theory here, which is somewhat less plausible, is that the boys were made into idiots by being repeatedly dropped on their heads when being lowered down the chimneys. Nevertheless, as we shall see, the ‘brush’ in this simile is neither of these; it is, as the dictionary would have it “A utensil consisting of a piece of wood or other suitable material, set with small tufts or bunches of bristles, hair, or the like, for sweeping or scrubbing dust and dirt from a surface”, that is - a brush. In looking for early examples of ‘daft as a brush’ in print we find that it first starts appearing in the 1950s. An example is in William Morgan Williams’s The Sociology of an English Village: Gosforth, 1956: The wives of two members of a kin-group locally thought to be eccentric and extremely unsociable were pointed out by several people as ‘gay queer’ and ‘daft as a brush’. [Gosforth is in Cumbria, UK] 1956 seems later than one would have expected and, as the word ‘daft’ has always been used more often in the north of England than in other places, a scan of some north country references seems in order. Voilà. ‘Daft as a brush’ it is in fact predated by an earlier variant ‘daft as a besom’. The earliest citation I can find is a listing in William Dickinson’s A glossary of the words and phrases
of Cumberland, 1859: Daft, without sense. “Ey, as daft as a besom.” A ‘besom’ is of course a brush made from twigs and a corroboration that the phrase originated with the ‘besom’ rather than the ‘brush’ version comes in another glossary, from just a few years earlier and collected in the same area - John and William Brockett’s A glossary of North country words, with their etymology, 1846: Fond, silly, foolish. An old Northern word. ‘Fond-as-abuzzom’, remarkably silly. The use of ‘fond’ to mean foolish predated our current usage, which is ‘to be fond of something or someone’. That present day meaning migrated from the earlier word, which in time came to mean ‘display a foolish affection for’. In Richard Rolle’s Psalter, 1339, the author refers to ‘fonnyd maydyns’ (foolish girls). The word appears in more contemporary language in John Lyly’s Euphues: the Anatomy of Wyt, 1578: He that is young thinketh the old man fond. So remember, if you are visiting the English northern counties and some old codger says that you are ‘as fond as a buzzom’, it isn’t exactly a compliment. culturally twinned? It must be about time that the ‘powers that be’ considered twinning Hua Hin with Hull? After all there are some eery similarities between the two. OK maybe not many, and certainly nothing involving climate conditions. But there are at least tenuous links in the form of Polo and Jazz. First Polo. As many of you will know Hua Hin has hosted the King’s Cup Tournament in elephant polo for the past 12 years. Sadly the tournament is being moved to Bangkok this year, but over in Hull on May 12th the city’s football stadium became the first of it’s kind in England to play host to polo of the horse born variety. Seven sets of hooves pounding around on hallowed turf for the duration of 4 polo matches might not seem like a good idea to the average football fan, but the pitch was scheduled to be dug up the next day, providing an ideal opportunity to bring polo to Hull’s masses. The few - about 300 - who did turn up for a pleasant - and free - afternoon were impressed. We can only hope for better attendances at the many events being planned for 2017, Hull’s year as UK City of Culture. Next is Jazz. Hua Hin will of course host it’s popular annual Jazz Festival again next month. Meanwhile on May 10th the beach in front of of the Centara Grand Hotel was the venue for an extra event - Hua Hin Asia Jazz Festival. By sheer coincidence Yours Truly was also at a Jazz gig on the same day. This one fortunately an indoor performance forming part of the Hull Jazz Festival. (Our ‘April showers’ seem to have misread the calendar this year.) Now, to me jazz should preferably involve a saxophone or two, keyboards, and double bass. Drums, violin and guitar are also perfectly acceptable. Anything in fact which will provide for soft haunting melodies or more upbeat rhythms. So my introduction to improvised jazz

Saturday 17th May 2014 THE FA CUP - FINAL Arsenal v Hull 23:00 Looking at their final league placings, this appears to be a non contest, very similar to when Manchester City took on Wigan in last year’s final, and everyone expected the Citizens to triumph, which of course they didn’t. There will be nerves among Arsenal fans and players, as they have been trophyless for several years now, while Hull have nothing to lose, already guaranteed a place in the Europa Cup next season. Add to that the international players for the Gunners who may be worried about getting injured ahead of the World Cup, and all the pieces are in place for another FA Cup upset. However fond we are at predicting them, though we don’t think there will be one here. Hull have had a very easy ride to get to the final, only facing one Premier League team (Sunderland), although that was their only home tie in the competition. Arsenal on the other hand have faced three top six sides (Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton) plus Wigan and Coventry. We think that this will end up being a relatively easy win for Arsenal, thus ending their long wait for a trophy; however would defeat cast doubt over Arsene Wenger’s future once again?
