hua hin, THAILAND As martial law was declared nationwide on Tuesday, the first question most people have asked is ‘how will this effect us?’ While it is hard to exactly answer this, the official word from the Tourism Authority of Thailand is effectively ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ with the proviso of avoiding demonstration or protest areas, and in Bangkok to avoid going outside in the evenings. For Hua Hin, based on previous similar incidents like the military coup in 2006, it is unlikely to have any ramifications for anyone living in or visiting the area. And the reported rejection this week of a planned antigovernment rally on Sunday outside Klai Kangwon Palace by protest monk Luang Pu Buddha Isara seems to indicate that the city authorities want to keep it that way. Heads of villages and people’s representatives met at the Hua Hin district office last Friday to express their opposition to the monk’s plans. Buddha Isara, who is a co-leader of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), had intended to hold a rally with some 6,000 demonstrators. Pol Maj Gen Thanet Soonthornsook, the Prachuap Khiri Khan provincial police chief, said, “It is unnecessary to file the petition in Hua Hin as concerned people can lodge it with the Privy Council Chambers in Bangkok,” and stressed that there should not be such political movements in Hua Hin. It is feasible that there may even be a mini boom of tourists heading this way, to escape the stricter conditions faced in Bangkok, and if this were the case it would prove true the old adage ‘it’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good’.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Beck and call To be at someone’s beck and call is to be entirely subservient to them; to be responsive to their slightest request. ’Call’ is used here with its usual meaning. ‘Beck’ is more interesting. The word, although it has been in use in English since the 14th century, isn’t one that is found outside the phrase ‘beck and call’ these days. It is merely a shortened form of ‘beckon’, which we do still know well and understand to mean ‘to signal silently, by a nod or motion of the hand or finger, indicating a request or command’. If the term ‘beck and call’ had originated prior to the 14th century we would presumably now say ‘beckon and call’. It didn’t though and the first recorded use of ‘beck and call’ in print is in Aemilia Lanyer’s set of poems Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum, 1611: The Muses doe attend vpon your Throne, With all the Artists at your becke and call; That is straightforward enough. What brings the phrase to the attention of etymologists is the confusion that some people have between it and ‘beckon call’. This supposed phrase is a simple mishearing of ‘beck and call’. The mistake comes about because no one uses ‘beck’ any longer, whereas ‘beckon’ is commonplace. ‘Beckon call’ could be said not to be a phrase in English at all, but it is gaining some ground nevertheless. The misspelling began in the USA in the early 20th century; for example, this early citation from The Modesto NewsHerald, May 1929: A crowd of several hundred people heard a stirring address by B. W. Gearhart, Fresno attorney and American Legion official. “Down through the history of American wars, from the Revolutionary to the recent World conflict,” the speaker declared, “America always has had at its beckon call men who would give their all for their country that people might enjoy peace and freedom.
The rogue phrase still appears in print in newspapers. Here’s a recent example from the London Daily Mirror, by Phil Differ and Jonathan Watson: He [football manager Dick Advocaat] told me what he was particularly looking forward to when he comes to Scotland and that’s having the entire Scottish press at his beckon call and I promised he won’t be disappointed. Just because ‘beckon call’ is based on a mishearing doesn’t mean that it won’t one day become accepted as proper English. Other phrases, like ‘beg the question’ for instance, are routinely used incorrectly by so many people that the incorrect usage has now become the standard. Let’s hope ‘beckon call’ dies a natural death, not only because it is essentially just a spelling mistake but because its adoption would signal the last gasp of the enjoyable little word ‘beck’.

However, if these investments don’t perform well, those investors may be left with disappointing returns, and a deflated wallet. The opinion on how well equity markets will perform in the future varies depending on who you ask. But, for those who are of the opinion that the markets will trade flat, or even decline, what are the options? Structured Products Structured Investment Products are an attractive solution for those who are uncertain about the future of the markets. They are linked to the performance of underlying market indices, but are not identical to them. They offer fixed rates of return over fixed investment periods, with an element of capital protection built in. One of the most popular types of Structured Product is the Quarterly Income Note, and it is designed to do just that…pay an income to the investor…every quarter. Quarterly Income Note Let’s say, for example, you want to invest $50,000 into a QIN and it is linked to the performance of 3 indices (such as the FTSE 100, EURO STOXX 50 and HSCEI). On the start date of the QIN the value of each index would be jotted down on a piece of paper. This could simply be stuck to your fridge and for the duration of the QIN these 3 numbers would be the only reference points that you need. Very easy to monitor!

Each quarter you would then look at the value of each index and, provided that none indices have fallen by a selected percentage range (normally around 30%), you would be paid a fixed income payment. These payments are often around 1.75% per quarter, meaning that over the course of the year the return could be around 7% per annum. Whilst a 7% return isn’t going to make you fall off your chair with excitement, it is a substantially higher return than leaving your cash in a current account generating about 0.5%. Many people leave their lump sum cash assets sitting idle, losing value and not generating income. With the QIN, the projected return beats inflation, is fixed and is a great way of boosting your income. As always, make your cash work hard, so you don’t have to.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
statuesque Sadly the FA cup has not made it’s way back to Hull, although fans are philosophical about it, and seem pleased enough just to have made it to Wembley in the first place. We did after all come a close second, and it was a nice sunny day. One of the city’s better statues is of Hull poet Philip Larkin, who stands forever at the ready in the railway station looking for all the world as if he is just going off to catch a train. Probably much as the sculptor intended. And in the run up to Cup Final day Larkin was draped in the black and amber colours of Hull City. No-one complained or made a song and dance about it. It just seemed an appropriate outfit for the occasion, while at the same time providing plenty of photo opportunities for passers by. Which brought to mind a bit of a fuss earlier this month involving the Angel of the North. Standing 20 metres high, and with a wing span of 54 metres, the Angel of the North sculpture welcomes people to Newcastle. Shortly after it was unveiled in the late 90’s some Newcastle United fans managed to adorn the Angel with a replica Number 9 shirt in tribute to their hero Alan Shearer. Sadly the authorities up there must be rather less tolerant than Hull folk, because the Angel stayed dressed for only 20 minutes. That cheeky gesture seems to have been surpassed this month though by well known mid range UK supermarket Morrisons. Having recently announced a drop in sales, some enterprising marketing person decided it would be a good idea to project an image of a Morrisons’ brand baguette across the wings of the Angel of the North. And very effective it looked too. Unfortunately the Angels’ sculptor wasn’t too keen. In fact he seemed positively miffed by the desecration of his creation by a mere chunk of bread. Antony Gormley pronounced that his work of art had

Which is a shame when you think back to all those miners slaving in the earth beneath the Angel just to put bread on their tables. This weeks word is ‘miffed’. For no other reason than to confirm that it is actually a genuine dictionary word and not just a slang expression! If you are miffed you are feeling somewhat annoyed or peeved.

There are just 14 days left before the World Cup kicks off in Brazil, so here is the AWOL guide to the group stages of the competition and our predictions as to who will progress to the knockout stages. Group A (Brazil, Cameroon, Croatia, Mexico) This should be a straightforward group for the hosts to negotiate, but second place is harder to predict. It could well come down to goal difference but we think Mexico should be able to squeak through. Group B (Australia, Chile, Netherlands, Spain) One of several very tough groups that could all be labelled ‘groups of death’, but Spain are the standout favourites to top it. A lot will depend on how the Dutch gel, as they have frequently had squad fallouts at this tournament, but assuming they don’t implode, we think they will progress. Group C (Colombia, Greece, Ivory Coast, Japan) Most pundits favourites for this group are Colombia, but it looks like their star player Falcao is ruled out through injury which is a big blow. We still think they will have enough to get through, alongside the Ivory Coast, with Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure in their last ever World Cup. Group D (Costa Rica, England, Italy, Uruguay) This is probably the hardest group both to predict and for the teams in question to get out of. All of them are capable of doing so, but are equally capable of key mistakes that could cost them. It is rare that England fail to
qualify for the knockout stage but we think they will fail this time, and Italy and Uruguay to progress we think. Group E (Ecuador, France, Honduras, Switzerland) This is likely to be another closely contested group and should favour Ecuador due to the climate conditions which they will be used to. No clear favourite though and we are going to plump for France and Ecuador to progress. Group F (Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, Nigeria) Clear favourites in this group and to at least reach the semi finals are Argentina, and we think it will be between Bosnia and Nigeria for second spot, and we are plumping for the latter to make it. Group G (Germany, Ghana, Portugal, United States) Another collection of teams that has been dubbed a group of death with all capable of beating the others. Despite that, the pedigree of Germany installs them as automatic favourites and the presence of Ronaldo puts Portugal in line for the other spot - however we are going to pick Ghana to finish behind the Germans. Group H (Algeria, Belgium, Korea Republic, Russia) This should be a relatively straightforward group with the strong squad of Belgium favourites, being followed by the well disciplined defensive unit that is Russia, although both of the other teams are capable of taking points off these two.
