hua hin, THAILAND It is still too early to know what the long term effects on Thailand will be of the military coup, but in the short term the curfew, despite its easing this week to midnight until 4am, is clearly having an impact on business and tourism across the country. Hua Hin and the surrounding areas are probably faring a little better than most in this regard, but the hospitality and nightlife sectors have once again borne the brunt of the hardship. The only saving grace is that the timing of the coup was kind, whether planned or by chance, so that it is in what is historically the lowest part of the low season, but equally the knock on effect for the European and American summer holiday season in July, August and September and the next high season could be devastating, with people in those areas looking to book now likely to look elsewhere. A major drive by the tourism authorities will be required to try and rescue the situation, if and when the country is returned to non-military leadership. Hopefully this week’s easing of the curfew will be followed swiftly by a complete end of it, as there are several other noticeable effects - fresh fruit and vegetables, and other produce is showing some signs of being in short supply as the major markets in Bangkok have been unable to trade, with most of them normally operating in the small hours and thus unable to at present. Equally no freight or passenger trains are running during the night, so deliveries of other raw materials and goods are being limited. Inter provincial bus travel is still outlawed as well, presumably in an attempt to prevent protestors gathering.

The capital city, Seoul, has introduced larger parking spaces just for lady drivers marked out in pink paint with a mini-skirted logo. Apparently this is part of a $95 million to make the city more friendly to women. These ‘lady-friendly’ parking spaces, like disabled spaces, are closer to entrances and lifts. That is not all – the city has also installed squishy stiletto-friendly pavements near the spaces. Tough one one to talk yourself out of… but we all like a trier. The ‘hero’ of this tale came up with best answer he could when caught in flagrante. He told police he was hiding naked in the bush because he needed to fart – and didn’t want to do it in his car. His elaborate excuses for his public nudity did not stop there. For the uninitiated, a brozilian is the male version of the all-off Brazilian wax, where the hair is ripped from man’s most intimate parts, including the testicles. Officers refused to buy the excuse after checking his car and finding a neatly folded blue towel on the driver’s seat with an open packet of condoms on the passenger seat. 24-year-old David Foskette was subsequently charged with a count of indecent exposure and booked into jail. norway ‘Artist eats his own deformed hip’ after it’s removed by doctors A man has reportedly eaten his own hip after originally telling doctors who removed it he was going use it for art Alexander Selvik Wengshoel, from Norway, had the deformed bone cut out four years ago and replaced with a metal one. Prior to the operation he was only able to move using crutches and a wheelchair. The 25-year-old has now revealed he feasted on his hip instead of using it in an art project as he originally intended to. ‘I just wanted to use it in my art. I didn’t know at that time that I would boil it and eat it,’ he told The Local. ‘I had to boil off the meat to get to the bone, and when I started scraping off the meat, I took off a little piece and I thought, why not do it.’

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Raze to the ground To destroy and sweep completely away. The expression ‘raze to the ground’, like ‘bated breath’ and ‘just deserts’, is often spelled incorrectly. The sources of these misunderstandings are the homophones ‘bated’ and ‘baited’, ‘deserts’ and ‘desserts’ and, in ‘raze to the ground’, ‘raze’ and ‘raise’. Added to that is the fact that the correct spelling in each case is of an archaic word that is rarely used elsewhere. As a child, I heard stories of WWII and of cities like Dresden and Hiroshima being, as I thought, ‘raised to the ground’. That seemed odd to me. How could destroying them with bombs raise them? Were these cities underground? It makes a little more sense when we understand that ‘raze’ is the verb that gave rise to the noun ‘razor’. What’s being said is akin to ‘razored (that is, shaved) to the ground’. It seems that others are similarly confused - there are currently (Oct 2009) many hits in Google for ‘raise the the ground’. Raze is hardly a common word now (in the UK at least - there is more use of it in other countries, notably the USA), but it was in the 16th century; for example, Henry Howard, the Earl of Surrey, used it in Aeneid II, 1547, in a context that makes the ‘razored/erased’ meaning evident: “I saw Troye fall down in burning gledes. Neptunus town clene razed from the soil.” Shakespeare also used it in Henry VI, Part II, 1592: “These are his substance, sinewes, armes, and strength, With which he ... Razeth your Cities, and subverts your Townes.” The earliest example that I can find of the precise ‘raze to the ground’ form is in The Glory of England, written by Thomas Gainsford in 1620: “King Lewis held nothing in Italy but the lanterne of Genes, which afterward the Genouais razed to the ground.”

However, whilst thinking about saving money in the short term is commonplace, saving for the long term is often overlooked. So, as expats, what are the types of things that we should all be saving for? Retirement A scary amount of people neglect their retirement savings thinking it is something that they will get around to. The cost of delay is high and absolutely everyone should be making provisions for when they retire. Medical emergencies Many expats have medical cover. However, for those who don’t, make it a priority to get an insurance policy sorted or, at the very least, have a slush fund that you can dip into if something were to go wrong. Children’s University Fees With university fees rising at a scary 7.5%, putting money aside for this expensive life expense is key… especially if you have to pay expat prices, which can be 3 times the normal cost. Repatriation and periods of unemployment If you were to leave Thailand, whether planned or on a whim, ensure you have enough set aside to repatriate… and to find a new job in your new location. Life events Of course we should all be saving for the long term, however make sure that you still find the cash to treat yourself. Don’t do this too often of course. Save for one

Top tips for saving • The first rule to effective savings is ‘save before you spend’. People often splurge and then if, and only if, they have anything left over then squirrel it away. Take control of your finances and resist the temptation to aimlessly spend. •
Make sure that you allocate a realistic percentage of your money per month to your savings. The general rule of thumb is to save at least 15% of your salary, with this percentage increasing as your salary rises. And if you get a bonus, resist the urge to splurge! Save it for a rainy day.

Finally, prioritize your savings. Good financial planning means you will have access to emergency money, normally 6 months of living expenses. Next, put your cash into anything with a matched contribution scheme or an account with tax advantages. Your financial advisor can help you to set one up.

The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile elderly lady. He climbed a nearby telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialed the subscriber’s house. tactical democracy A young relative embarked on her first trip to Thailand early this month, much to the consternation of her Dad. Especially when he realised that, rather than travelling in relative safety with her boyfriend, she was going for three weeks flight only with a female friend. The anxiety was only eased a little when she announced that the pair had booked an adventure trip in advance with an Australian company. Unfortunately my assurances that they would be fine - that the adventure would probably involve whizzing through jungle on zip wires - didn’t really help much. I can’t understand why. News of an outbreak of Swine Flu in the Land of Smiles didn’t do much to ease the pain either. But more was to come. As the intrepid travellers arrived in Bangkok a 6 point something earthquake hit some Northern provinces, followed a short time later by the removal of the Prime Minister from office. The two events were not connected, and still not enough to spoil a holiday. Until of course the last couple of days in Bangkok, and the prospect of a severely curtailed nightlife. But hey - it was still a great adventure, and the pair would soon be back home in a country where nothing much ever happens, and where the biggest news (after the FA Cup Final) is the weather. How wrong can you be. Not only had Prince Charles almost single handedly started World War 111, but the UK Government was left battered and bruised by the election successes of UKIP, the UK Independence Party. For those who are not familiar with recent goings on over here, or were simply sidetracked by the search for a Chang after 10 pm, last weeks elections were twofold. Everyone voted for their choice of MEP, (Member of the European Parliament), while at the same time some also voted separately for their local Councillors. I say ‘everyone’, which isn’t strictly true. Almost everyone

has the right to vote. Many can’t be bothered, don’t believe it does any good, or simply won’t brave the rain. I have to wonder though why our coalition Conservative/ LibDem leaders didn’t see it coming. (The election results that is - not the rain.) While UKIP made some reasonable gains in the local Council elections, they really stormed to victory in the European Parliament, winning more seats than any other UK party, leaving our deputy Prime Minister and LibDem leader Nick Clegg looking as if he was about to cry, while his boss David Cameron dismissed the whole event as tactical voting.
Which perhaps it was, along with that of many other European countries where the electorate have also swung to far right ‘anti establishment’ parties. Only time will tell. But what we are seeing is an excellent example of democracy at work. It seems only right that this weeks’ word should be ‘democracy’. A straightforward no frills word which describes a form of government in which people are free to vote for the representatives who they want to govern
