out/in visa runs outlawed

hua hin, THAILAND Measures designed to eliminate foreigners from attempting to work in Thailand without the proper visa or work permit have begun being enforced this week at land borders and will be expanded to airport arrivals next month. With immediate effect, anyone attempting to enter Thailand at a land border crossing will have their passport closely scrutinised, and if the officer sees either back to back tourist visas or multiple visa exempt entries in the passport, entry will be denied. From 12th August the same will apply to air passengers. Reaction to this from the expat community has been mixed, with some bemoaning the strict enforcement of the existing rules and questioning the motives, while many are applauding the moves as a big step towards better security and a better image for the country which has been seen as a safe haven for the criminal and terrorist fraternity. There has also been confusion, and speculation whether there will be further changes to visa rules; rumours abound that overstayers will be more harshly dealt with, while it isn’t completely clear what will be an acceptable period between tourist visas or visa exempt stamps. Others believe that the authorities may also clamp down on other visa types as well, although there has been no official word on this, and normally changes to rules are ‘grandfathered’ for those already holding them. Hopefully the confusion that has reigned will die down as the stricter enforcement becomes the norm, and does not deter genuine tourists from coming here; further changes may also be necessary next year to align with other ASEAN countries which could possibly ease things again. For any reader concerned how they might be affected, we advise visiting the new immigration office in Soi 35.

SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Blaze a trail To lead the way. When soldiers ‘blaze away’ with their weapons the blaze refers to the fire and smoke. This has been used since the late 18th century, as here from the Battle of Brooklyn, 1776: “We bid them stand and blazed away like brave boys.” The meaning we now give to ‘blaze a trail’ - of someone forging ahead and clearing a path for others, would tend to lead towards imagining blaze to mean burn, in the same way. Another allusion might be to someone charging ahead with such vigour that they leave a smoldering trail in their wake. Those aren’t the thoughts in the mind of those that coined this phrase though. A blaze is a notch or mark, like the blaze marks seen on horses’ faces. So, ‘to blaze a trail’ was to mark it out by notching trees so that others could follow. Trees are also often marked this way to single them out for felling. The use of blaze to mean the chipping off of a small piece of bark to mark a path or boundary is American in origin. That’s seen in these early citations. Dr. Thomas Walker’s Journal of Exploration [of Kentucky], 1750: “I Blazed a way from our House to the River.” & “I blazed several trees in the fork and marked T. W. on a Sycamore Tree” John J. Henry’s An accurate account of the hardships of that band of heroes who traversed the wilderness in the campaign against Quebec in 1775: “A path tolerably distinct, which we made more so by blazing the trees.” The first actual usage of the precise phrase ‘blaze a trail’ that can be found is from the Montana newspaper The Helena Independent, November 1883: “The merchants thereupon, desirous of securing the trade of the new mines, offered the stranger $100 if he

would blaze a trail through, and afterward it could be cleared sufficiently for pack animals to pass along.” Blast from the past Something or someone that returns after a period of obscurity or absence. It is normally applied to things that that were thought fondly of previously and are making a welcome return - particularly pop songs. Used first by US radio DJs when introducing old records. It isn’t clear which DJ coined this, and no one lays especial claim to it. A strong contender has to be Jerry Blavat (‘The Geator with the Heater’). Blavat’s style was frantic and he was known for his impromptu ‘stream of consciousness’ verbal delivery. Here’s an example from an article about him in ‘The Progress’, a Pennsylvania newspaper, from 1967: “Kings and queens, yon [sic] royal teens, this is your Geator with the Heater coming to you on Big-Tahm Tuesday where we rock the big tick- tock, where we got the class to beat the blast from the past” The article began with a dictionary of ‘handy translations, straight from The Geator’, including: Groove, blast - great Golden Oldies - old rock ‘n roll songs

Railways through Africa, Dams across the Nile, Ships? For those of us who have seen the classic Disney film, Mary Poppins, you may recall an enchanting little song called ‘Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’. In the song, Mr Banks encourages his son, Michael, to invest his money safely in the bank. “If you invest your tuppence wisely in the bank… Safe and sound Soon that tuppence safely invested in the bank…Will compound…” The song talks about all the wonderful things that Michael’s tuppence could be invested into. You see, Michael, you’ll be part of railways through Africa… Dams across the Nile… Ships!”. Similar to us all, making decisions about where to put our cash is difficult, whether it be a tuppence or something more substantial. Here, I briefly reflect on some investments that Michael may want to avoid, if he were investing his money today. GOLD. According to Bloomberg, some of the worst performing investments in 2013 were related to gold companies. In 2013, owning a share in a gold mine was not the way to make money, as demonstrated by the second largest gold producer in the world, Newmont Mining, which was down 47%, (mainly due to staff restructuring). One of the worst performing mutual funds was a gold fund that also down by a stonking 49%. CORN. Trading on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), corn came in as one of the worst performing commodities. This was due to various factors, one being increased supply for the US following a record harvest. Basic supply and demand rules helped to dictate a downward price movement. CURRENCY. Well, not all currencies, but some of them. There were a few bad performers during 2013. With the South African Rand falling by around 17%, this was one of them. The Japanese Yen also had a bit of a tough time.

One if the better performers in 2013 was the British Pound, luckily for Michael Banks. LITIGATION FUNDS. For example, it is purported that little due diligence was done in relation to the Axiom fund, a fund which invested into law firms. According to Axiom Legal Financing Fund investor literature, the fund was promoted as “an alternative uncorrelated, open-ended investment fund that provides short-term finance to UK law firms”. The fund was suspended in October 2012. INVESTING TIPS Of course I am not suggesting that all of the above genres of investments are to avoid completely. Times change and individual companies or funds within those genres may be prosperous. However, as always: • The number one rule is diversification. Don’t invest

all of your money into one fund only. It’s safe to have one reputable financial adviser or mutual fund company managing all of your money, but only as long as they diversify your portfolio. One who fails to do so is not doing their job effectively. • Set your parameters. Decide how much you can potentially risk and only put small proportions of your money into high risk investments. • Do your homework. Read about the companies and funds that you invest into and their general financial position. • And keep some of your money in investments that have high liquidity. Tying all of your money into inaccessible investments is never advisable, especially in the event of an emergency.

two drunks Two drunks sitting at the rural area bar, lamenting their lack of a sex life. One looks out the window, and across the road is a sheep stuck half way thru a fence, with its butt facing the tavern. One drunk says he sure wishes that sheep were Marilyn Monroe. The other says, “I just wish it were dark.” wild horse A blonde decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no lessons or prior experience. She mounts the horse unassisted and then horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady and rhythmic pace, but the blonde begins to slip from the saddle. In terror, she grabs for the horse’s mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. She tries to throw her arms around the horse’s neck, but she slides down the side of the horse anyway. The horse gallops along, seemingly impervious to its slipping rider. Finally, giving up her frail grip, she leaps away from the horse to try and throw herself to safety. Unfortunately, her foot has become entangled in the stirrup and she is now at the mercy of the horse’s pounding hooves as her head is battered against the ground again and again. She is mere moments away from unconsciousness when........ ........the Wal-Mart manager runs out to shut the horse off. man Why did God create man first? So he wouldn’t have to be told how to do it.

Daily, weekly or long term skunk A man and a woman are driving along when they see a wounded skunk on the side of the road. They stop, the woman gets out, picks it up, and brings it into the car. She says, “Look, its shivering, it must be cold. What should I do?” He says, “Put it between your legs.” She says, “What about the smell?” He says, “Hold its nose.” virus warning There is a new virus. The code name is WORK. If you receive WORK from your colleagues, your boss, via e-mail, or from anyone else, do not touch it under any circumstances. This virus wipes out your private life completely. If you should happen to come in contact with this virus, take five friends and go straight to the nearest bar. Order drinks immediately and after three rounds, you will find that WORK has been completely deleted from your system. Forward this virus warning immediately to at least five friends. Should you realize you do not have five friends, this means you are already infected by this virus and WORK already controls your life. If this is the case, go to the bar and stay until you make at least five friends. I think I have five friends, but am not entirely positive so I’m headed for the bar anyway...it never hurts to be safe. THANK GOODNESS I GOT THIS IN TIME!

a dog’s life Our word of the week comes first for a change, because it pretty much sums up what is to follow. ‘Maundering’ is a strange sounding word meaning to talk in a rambling manner, or ‘to maunder’, which seems quite appropriate. Maybe we should change our title to ‘Maundering To Hull and Back’. And the first maunder is dog related. Now, I know that dogs can be a touchy subject in Hua Hin, and that is quite understandable. I’ve had the odd nipped ankle there, which is nothing compared to some of the damage they can cause, especially when motorbikes are involved. But at least soi dogs usually know their place. On the soi. Not indoors like so many of our pampered pooches here in cooler climes, where, quite apart from frequent cold weather, there is the added risk of losing exhorbitantly priced animals to dognappers.

Because those images of Snoopy snoozing on top of his kennel are history. Long gone are the days when we could safely leave our pedigree pet in the garden - even in summer and with a suitable kennel for them to shelter in. There is far too much risk on several counts. Not only the risk of dognapping, but the fear of legal action should some innocent soul enter our property and fall foul of a frenzied attack by Fido. Even if it transpired that Fido had attacked a not so innocent soul he would probably be headed for doggy heaven just for protecting his property, leaving his owners with a huge bill for compensation. Then there are vet bills. So big that most dog owners in the UK need private medical insurance for Fido, plus of course micro chipping in case he does go AWOL. So it is hardly surprising that, in the UK at least, mans’ best friend is kept indoors much of the time. Which is where the problems really begin. The tabloid press has reported its’ illustrated findings on destructive dogs. Under the title ‘Britains’ Peskiest Pets’ are photos of mass destruction in homes. Many dogs seem happy to shred magazines and newspapers, while some have more expensive tastes, preferring to destroy sofas or window blinds. What puzzles and yes - irritates me is that the dogs themselves are labelled as ‘pesky’, when in fact they are probably just bored out of their minds. Being locked in houses while their owners are out at work all day is simply not a normal life for a dog. And yet these pesky little misdemeanors are portrayed as a bit of fun, while the owners seem to accept it all as an inevitable part of owning a dog. One spaniel, prone to romping in mud and ponds, as they do, causes his owner to regularly have to clean her house ‘from top to bottom.’ Well sorry dear but I have news for you - stop the dog at the door. Yes I know, you have to have old towels at the ready and rugby tackle him. So be it. He will learn. As for the destructive dogs, don’t expect a pack animal to be happy when left home alone.

masticator Luis Suarez’s Barcelona contract to include three chewable Catalans a week

barcelona, spain Luis Suarez has joined Barcelona in a record deal, after the Spanish giants offered the striker three Catalan residents a week that he can bite freely. The deal was concluded in the last week, after Suarez admitted he was tired of chewing on scousers, and required a ‘fresh taste’ at this stage of his career. Liverpool spokesperson Simon Williams explained, “We are disappointed to lose Luis, but understand that after a few years Scousers can start to seem a little bland.” However Barcelona are delighted at the capture, and a spokesperson told us, “To secure a player of Luis’ calibre to a long-term deal is great for us, and we are confident he now has the proper edible rewards he deserves for his on-pitch performances.” “Sure, most players negotiate cars, homes, and win bonuses, but Luis

number without too many complaints.” Barcelona fans have reacted with delight at the capture of Suarez, right up until the point they found out that fans were being asked to volunteer for chew-toy duty at the training ground. Season ticket holder Miguel Matthews explained, “Can we not start him off on some of the reserves? Most of them are rubbish.” However Barcelona’s spokesperson concluded, “Look, I’m sure some fans are a little nervous about volunteering, but you know how when you own a rabbit you’re supposed to provide something for them to chew on?” “Well owning a Luis Suarez is much the same.”
