SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... On the fiddle Engaged in a fraud. ‘Fiddling’ is usually meant to mean ‘cheating in a petty way’, perhaps falsifying one’s expenses or not declaring all of one’s taxable income. Of course, a fiddle is also a slang term for violin. There are a couple of proposed derivations of the ‘cheating’ meaning of the phrase ‘on the fiddle’, each of them having supporters who are firm in their belief. Let’s take the oldest first. The expression is said by some to derive from the Emperor Nero, who famously ‘fiddled while Rome burned’ and was a byword for corruption and dishonesty. The second suggestion is that the ‘fiddle’ was the name of the raised edge of the square wooden plates used by sailors. If a sailor took a normal amount of food he was said to have a ‘square meal’ and if his plate was overflowing he was said to be ‘on the fiddle’. As is often the case, those suggestions have only been mentioned in order to knock them down. The Nero story is mere fancy. It may be a nice play on words that he was ‘on the fiddle’ in both senses, that is, he was both corrupt and a violinist (actually he wasn’t even a violinist, there being no such instrument in Nero’s lifetime, but let’s not get sidetracked) but that’s all this tale has going for it. The culinary procedures on board sailing ships don’t offer much of an explanation either. The idea that sailors’ plates had raised edges and that these were called fiddles is quite incorrect. There were fiddles in sailing ships’ galleys but those were arrangements of small posts and strings arranged around the edges of tables that were used to stop plates falling on the floor in rough weather. If the above isn’t enough to convince then the fact that ‘on the fiddle’ in the ‘acting fraudulently’ meaning is a mid-20th century idiom should clinch it. The expression wasn’t known in the age of sail and certainly not in ancient Rome. A good place to look for a phrase like

‘on the fiddle’, with its association with minor crime, would be court records, and if the expression were in common use in English it might be expected to be found in the database of cases provided by the Central Criminal Court in England and Wales, commonly known as the Old Bailey. This is a comprehensive record of all the criminal cases brought to the court between 1674 and 1913, and no one was accused in The Bailey of being ‘on the fiddle’ during all that time. The term ‘fiddle’ appears to have originated in America. It is recorded in an 1874 edition of John Hotten’s Slang Dictionary: Fiddle... In America, a swindle or an imposture. Hotten also included this entry: Fiddler... A sharper, a cheat; also one who dawdles over little matters, and neglects great ones. ’On the fiddle’ was taken up by the British forces in WWII. It was well enough established in popular slang in the UK by 1961 for it to have been used as the title of a Sean Connery film and that is the first example of it that is found in print. The plot involved a young Connery playing a streetwise rough diamond who runs various street scams while serving in the British army.

Family Protection Some people are of the opinion that everyone should have a life insurance policy. Personally, I am not of that opinion. Instead, the key questions is: would your dependents be in a financially difficult position if something were to happen to you? If the answer is ‘yes’ then life insurance is definitely a must-have. However, life insurance normally comes at a cost so it is important that its engagement is considered carefully. Which then begs the question, who really needs life insurance? •

‘The Breadwinner’. If you are the key earner of the family then having this safety net in place is essential. Without your income the lives of your remaining family would be materially affected. Would your children be able to stay in the same school? Might your family have to move house? Drive a different car? The death of a breadwinner often results in a drastic change of lifestyle for a surviving spouse and/ or children, but this can be protected against.

• Dual Earners. If you are both bringing in an

income but one income were to fall away, would you still have enough to support the family? A Joint Life Insurance policy is often considered by couples to ensure all bases are covered. • ‘I’m covered by my company’. If you and/or your

partner are employed you may well have Death In Service Benefit provided by your employer, normally paying out 2 to 4 times your annual salary. Of course, this is a great perk of your job, however, DISB only rarely proves to be enough life coverage to fully support a family over the long-term. Sitting down and considering exactly how much cover you need is essential. • Business Owners. Many business owners will

take out loans for their businesses, securing those loans on their personal assets. This can lead to a stressful situation in the event that the surviving family members have to sell some of the

assets to meet the loan obligations. In addition if your business is a partnership it is important to consider the implication of one of the partners dying. This is particularly the case in Thailand where company ownership can be complicated. • Older Parent. If you have started a family later in

life it is important to consider that your children will require your support for the next 15 – 20 years. Whilst people are living longer it is essential that you are covered in case of all eventualities. Generally speaking, single and elderly persons with no dependents often do not need life insurance. However, sometimes they may wish to do so for extended member of the family or in case they are supporting parents. For the older generation they may also wish to establish life insurance in order to cover any potential inheritance tax bills that their families may face. Buying a life insurance policy is not the glamorous end of the finance world. Further, not many people feel comfortable contemplating the consequences of something tragic happening to them; however it’s an essential part of financial planning and definitely something worth considering.

The Speed of Time by Age 0 - 9 Extremely slow. Even a trip to the store with Mum seems like going to Albania - by covered wagon. Most common phrase: “Is it Christmas yet?” 10 - 19 Still slow. Scientific evidence seems to show that school clocks actually move backwards just before the bell rings. 20 - 29 Alternately fast and slow. Weekends seem shorter and shorter, yet paychecks seem further and further apart. 30 - 39 Time achieves warp speed, except when put on hold on the telephone and forced to endure anything longer than 5 seconds of Muzak. Most common phrase: “Is it Christmas already?” 40 - 49 Still fast. Seems like just yesterday when Jerry Brown said he might run for President. Wait a minute! It WAS yesterday when he said that. Also, Dick Clark still looks the same. Could time be slowing down? 60-69 Hey! What happened to 50-59? 70 + Unbelievably fast. Wars used to last years. Daily, weekly or long term H-E-G-S The Doctor tells his patient that he has H-E-G-S “What’s that?”, the patient asks. “It’s a combination of Herpes, Encephalitis, Gonorrhea and Syphyllis.” The patient wants to know if there’s a cure, to which the Doctor responds, “We have to keep you in a hospital room and feed you nothing but pancackes.” “Why only pancackes?”, asks the patient. The Doctor answers, “They’re the only thing that will fit under the door.” the knob A woman in her late forties went to a plastic surgeon for a face lift. The surgeon told her about a new procedure called “The Knob” A small knob is placed on the back of a woman’s head and can be turned to tighten up her skin to produce the effect of a brand new face lift – forever. Of course, the woman wanted “The Knob.” Fifteen years later, the woman returned to the surgeon with two problems. “All these years, everything has been working just fine. I’ve had to turn the knob many times and I’ve always loved the results. But now I’ve developed two annoying problems. First, I have these terrible bags under my eyes and the knob won’t get rid of them.” The doctor looked at her closely and said, “Those aren’t bags, those are your breasts.” She said, “Well, I guess that explains the goatee!!

war - what is it good for? This coming Monday - July 28th - marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1. So called because it was the first ‘global’ war. You’ve probably found it hard to avoid media coverage of this landmark anniversary, with articles, photos, and TV programmes about the Great War wherever you look. Some may find it all becoming a bit tedious, and I must admit to not avidly reading or watching much of it myself. Not out of any lack of respect for those who fought and died. Far from it. Many of us, even now a hundred years on, don’t have to search far back in our family trees to find the names of grandparents, great grandparents, and other family members who believed that they were giving their lives for their country. It’s just that the whole thing is beginning to feel more like a celebration than a rememberance, but one which was punctuated just last week by a stark reminder that the world really doesn’t seem to have moved on much during the intervening years. Alongside all the no doubt well meaning initiatives certainly in the UK anyway - to ensure that our young people learn about the Great War - comes a sickening attack on an airliner full of innocent people. Then of course there are other ongoing conflicts, with Gaza and Israel occupying most front pages most of the time. Surely these are the real time events, along with 7/11 and other atrocities, which will leave lasting impressions on todays’ young people, rather than what happened 100 years ago? Moving on to August 6th comes another stark reminder of war, with the 69th anniversary of the dropping of an atom bomb on Hiroshima. (By the way, isn’t it strange how that event is always referred to as ‘the dropping of the atom bomb’ rather than ‘the atomic destruction’ of Hiroshima? Almost as if it were simply an experiment - which I suppose it was. But isn’t it time someone acknowledged that they had a pretty good idea what would happen?) Against all the odds though Hiroshima moves on, and spreads the word of peace via its’ trees. Which brings

us to our word of the week, or rather two words, which happen to be in Japanese. (OK - you can’t blame me for not trying!) ‘Hibaku Jumoko’ means ‘survivor tree’. Despite the atom bomb, in the following Spring some of Hiroshimas’ trees began to grow again out of the devastation. Of those survivors about 170 trees, which grow within a 2 kilometre radius of the bombs’ epicentre, are now classed as Hibaku Jumoko, and saplings produced from them are sent around the world to any town or city which wants to display a real living testament to survival and hope for the future.

losing his bottle Van Gaal slates Ferguson’s wine cellar

manchester, england MANCHESTER United’s new boss Louis van Gaal has slammed the quality of the booze left behind by Sir Alex Ferguson. On his first day in the job, former Holland boss van Gaal inspected the magnums, jennies and jeroboams assembled by Ferguson over 27 years, and declared them woefully substandard. Van Gaal said: “There’s a few big-name labels here that simply aren’t pulling their weight. “I don’t care if it’s a Chateauneuf-du-Pape or a Slovenian retsina, if its mouthfeel isn’t velvety it’s going straight down the sink.” The Butthead lookalike went on to announce that the days of three-for-atenner deals from Morrisons were over, also declaring a moratorium on any

United’s wines to decline in his final seasons in charge. Rumours have also abounded that the long-serving coach secretly emptied several prize bottles of rioja before his departure, replacing them with his own blood, which has a slightly lower alcohol content. Man United fan Tom Logan said: “I want us to buy loads of English wines even though they cost a fortune and look embarrassing when you put them next to proper European stuff.” Van Gaal also dismissed the merits of the single bottle left behind by David Moyes, a bottle of cava put on ice in August last year and never opened.
