murderer of bar girl arrested, confesses: met through facebook
hua hin, THAILAND Two months ago a Thai girl was found dead inside a well in Hin Lek Fai; she had been murdered by a Thai man she met and arranged to meet through Facebook. The reason for his brutal attack has been reported in different ways but after the arrest last weekend of Nopadol Suriyo he confessed to the killing and gave his version of events. He claimed that he became friends with Miss Kanjana or Phim Sirirat, aged 24 from Buriram on the social network and after chatting several times online agreed to meet in Hua Hin on the evening of June 19th. Miss Kanjana had come to Hua Hin to work at the Suky 2 bar in Soi Binthabaht in the centre of the town and was popular with both colleagues and regulars at the bar. She told her friends that she was meeting someone that evening. Prior to meeting her Nopadol admitted to drinking and smoking cannabis, and at some point during the date they began to argue. Reports vary but Nopadol confessed that he wanted to have sex with her but that she refused, so an argument ensued which ended with him hitting her several times with what is believed to be a large piece of wood, before dumping her body in the well. This murder illustrates all too clearly the dangers that can lurk on social networks and we hope that Khun Phim’s untimely death will at least make other women, and men, more careful in future; good advice would be never meet alone on the first few dates and always stay in well populated areas. We would like to send our belated condolences to Khun Phim’s family and friends, and hope that the arrest and confession of her killer can bring some closure to them.

The Financial Benefits of Being an Expat.
Every week in this article Helen Couldrey, a financial consultant with the deVere Group, and also a qualified English lawyer, will give you tips and ideas of how to take advantage financially of being an expat. Helen has clients in Bangkok, Hua Hin and ChaAm who she helps to maximise the financial benefits of living overseas.

passive income in retirement Upon retirement, many expats choose to retire in Thailand. It can be one of the most interesting and cost effective countries to live in, with the bonus of beautiful weather thrown in. During that time many retirees will already have an adequate retirement fund on which they can live. However, needing, or wanting, to supplement that retirement fund through passive income is not uncommon. So what is passive income? In brief, passive income is an income received on a regular basis with little effort required to maintain it… sounds good hey. With that in mind, here are a few types of income that are often described as passive: •
OWN A BUSINESS. Whether it’s renting out transport, setting up a restaurant or selling artwork. If there’s something you feel passionate about then one option could be to set up your own business… and then let others run it on your behalf. This allows you to take a step back from the operations, allowing the income to roll in passively. However, owning a business can still involve a lot of work, regardless of how ‘hands off’ you intend to be. There’s also the legal hurdle of visa/work restrictions, so in reality this may be a less likely option.
•
RENTAL INCOME. Many people are able to supplement their retirement by renting out properties. Obviously the capital expenditure involved in such a plan is high as property doesn’t come cheap. If you have property in your home country then one obvious option is to rent that property out either yourself or through an agent.
•
DIVIDENDS. If you are interested in investments then buying stocks and shares could be the way
forward. The good thing is that you don’t need substantial capital to go down this route. The dividends can be a useful source of cash in retirement and if you need access to the capital they can be sold with relative ease. •
QUARTERLY INCOME NOTES. If you are of the opinion that markets may fall rather than rise, Quarterly Income Notes are a great option. They can pay an income every quarter and are linked to market indexes. Unless the chosen market indices go down by a pre-agreed percentage (normally around 20% or 30%) a fixed return is paid to you per quarter, normally providing returns of between 5 and 8% per annum.
Regarding the above options, I have ranked them from 1 to 4 for a reason; number 1 being the least passive and number 4 being the most passive. As above, business ownership can still be time consuming whereas monitoring a Quarterly Income Note would be as simple as checking a few market indices every 3 months. Of course these are just a few options when it comes to passive income. You can think outside of the box as much as possible, however please keep in mind any legal and visa restrictions. For this reason many expats opt for passive income generation through instruments such as dividends or Quarterly Income Notes. Regardless of which options you pick though, passive Income can be a great way to supplement a retirement fund with very little work required, allowing you time to focus on your more important goal ... enjoying your retirement.

Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 There are some kinds of pain that never go away, but after all these years you’d think they’d come up with a way to get that lobster to let go of your nose. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 You will never be able to explain to anyone’s satisfaction how all those chickens could just appear out of nowhere. Aries Mar 21 – Apr 20 Your fear of change means that spending the next few centuries in a block of ice will be extremely soothing, at least until the New Reformed Xalfraxian Alliance thaws you out.
Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 You’ll never again hear a negative word spoken of you, thanks to your sweet nature and an unfortunate incident with a pair of explosive earbuds. Gemini May 22 – June 21 It’s unclear whether you’re going to murder ice cream men or become an ice cream man and murder people, but the stars are pretty certain you’re going to be known as the Ice Cream Man Murderer. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 You’ve never asked anybody for anything in your life, which may be why those expectant waiters have been following you around for years. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 You’ll become a victim of boredom in the workplace when the technicians figure out a way to make your x-rays a lot more interesting.
Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 Although roughly 70 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water, that still doesn’t explain why you have to be rescued from drowning all the time. After all, it says Museum of Bloody Children’s Underwear right on the hand-painted sign on your house. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 This would be a bad week to leave your mansion, seeing as how you’ve betrayed about half of the people of Prachuap Kiri Khan. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 True love will careen into your life without warning next week, spin you around, take your breath away, dislocate your elbow, shatter your femur, and move on without having noticed you.

As most of you will be aware, the world lost one of it’s most genius comics this week when Robin Williams tragically chose to take his own life. We pay tribute to him in our own small way with some of his enormous body of work below. R.I.P Robin Williams. “If it’s the Psychic Network, why do they need a phone number?” “We had gay burglars the other night. They broke in and rearranged the furniture.” “If women ran the world we wouldn’t have wars, just intense negotiations every 28 days.” “The definition of pornography is quite simple. Erotic is using a feather, pornography is using the entire chicken.” “Cricket is basically baseball on Valium.” “Cocaine is God’s way of saying that you’re making too much money.” “Beer commercials usually show big men, manly men, doing manly things: ‘You’ve just killed a small animal. It’s time for a light beer.’ Why not have a realistic beer commercial, with a realistic thing about beer, where someone goes, ‘It’s 5 o’clock in the morning. You’ve just pissed on a dumpster. It’s Miller time.’” “Never pick a fight with an ugly person, they’ve got nothing to lose.” “I went to rehab [for alcoholism] in wine country, just to keep my options open.” “See, the problem is that God gives men a brain and a penis, and only enough blood to run one at a time.” Ah, yes, divorce … from the Latin word meaning to rip out a man’s genitals through his wallet.”

Daily, weekly or long term “A woman would never make a nuclear bomb. They would never make a weapon that kills. They’d make a weapon that makes you feel bad for a while.” “You know, you get that tattoo of barbed wire when you’re 18, but by the time you’re 80, it’s a picket fence.” “Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves?” “Ballets: men wearing pants so tight you can tell what religion they are.” “Death is nature’s way of saying, ‘Your table’s ready.’ ” On President Obama’s name: “Obama, which is an old Kenyan word for Kennedy, God bless us.” On the end of the George Bush presidency: “It’s the end of the reign of George the Second. The reign of error is over. America is officially out of rehab.” On the American economy: “And you can’t blame the economy on [George W. Bush]. They say the economy is essentially sound because people are considering buying things. That’s like saying fat people are healthy because they might exercise.” “We’ll never have a sex scandal with Jack [Nicholson]. He’s done everybody. (as Nicholson) ‘I had Angelina Jolie and afterward she adopted me.’” “And you’ll never have a drug scandal. Jack’s done every drug known to mankind. He’s the only guy in the world where Keith Richards will go, ‘I have to go home now, Jack.’”

conservation nation Would you pay almost £8,000 sterling to save one bird? (or roughly 430,000 baht in todays money.) Before you get any strange ideas, we are talking about the feathered variety. The black-tailed Godwit no less. Don’t worry - I hadn’t heard of it either until last week, when it suddenly became the focus of attention in this part of the UK. Forget the Scottish referendum. This is the really important stuff. Apparently the black-tailed Godwit (or BTG for the sake of brevity) is a large wading bird which feeds on things that wriggle around in mudflats. Not just any old mudflats either, but the ones just across the river Humber from Hull which our not so little feathered friends currently call home. At this point a little clarification won’t go amiss. Hull sits on the north bank of a pretty big river called the Humber, which not only separates us from the alien peoples of North Lincolnshire, but is also home to a few other ports. Which is how the dilemma of the local BTG population came about, when Able UK, a huge ports and maritime management company, chose Godwit territory on which to develop a new port complex. Conservationists were not happy, so Able UK have promised to spend a staggering £60 million pounds (over 3 thousand million baht) on relocating the BTG colony. Quite how the number of BTGs involved was established hasn’t been revealed, but clearly there are a lot of them. And they won’t live on any old mudflats either. The millions of pounds are needed to re-create just the right kind of boggy environment for them on the opposite bank of the river. You can imagine the ensuing debate. When it comes to money us Yorkshire folk have almost as bad a reputation as the Scots. On the other hand we Brits can be quite sentimental when it comes to protecting endangered species, which includes the BTG. This is a country where we even make little tunnels under roads to keep hedgehogs safe from traffic. But looking at the bigger picture, are we beginning to invest too much in sometimes vain attempts to alter the

course of nature? And do we only care about the cute or impressive looking species like pandas, elephants, and - well BTGs? China for example has a massive panda breeding programme which boasts the recent arrival of panda cub triplets. Left to their own devices pandas would probably now be extinct. Largely because they are not very good at breeding or replenishing stocks of mulberry. But as far as the environment is concerned pandas don’t keep any other animal species under control, so in the cold light of day are we battling to save them purely because they are cute, while confining all future generations to lives in captivity? Meanwhile in South Africa elephants are again causing problems, because previous bans on hunting them resulted in their numbers increasing so much that they are now destroying the very environments which sustain other wildlife. Culling has become inevitable, although the conservationists message has become so emotive that the likes of the Kruger National Park would prefer not to publicise precise details for fear of upsetting their visitors. Like most people I love animals and abhor animal cruelty. At the same time though I eat meat which is sustainably farmed or hunted, and again, like most people, have been brought up to distinguish between the need to eat and the need to care for - and manage - wildlife. But I have to question the logic in spending a huge amount of money on relocating a colony of seabirds which are equipped with wings, and are no doubt quite capable of relocating themselves should the need arise. This weeks word is ‘bionomics’. The study of the mode of life of organisms in their natura habitat and their adaptations to their surroundings. Just a long winded explanation of a word which means pretty much the same as ‘ecology’.

destiny?
‘Win our remaining games and the title is ours’ insists Liverpool’s Gerrard
liverpool, england With just 37 games to go until the end of the Premier League season, the maths is simple: Liverpool are in control of their Premier League destiny. All they need to do is win their remaining games and the 19th league title that the club has craved for a quarter of a century will be theirs. Unlike previous near misses, such as 2009’s late rally when the reds were banking on Manchester United slipping up during the title run-in, or last season’s goal difference-fuelled three-way battle with Manchester City and Chelsea, Liverpool are now firmly in the driving seat. Not since 1990 has top flight league silverware graced the Anfield trophy room, but now, with the title in their grasp as they enter what Sir Alex Ferguson famously called “squeaky-bum time”, that
Above: Gerrard realises during the game against Southampton that he left his Aston Martin parked in Anfield Road without giving a quid to the kids to look after it
could all change in just nine months. But being in touching distance of the Premier League trophy, the pressure will surely mount ever more between now and the end of the season on the champions elect. Rodgers summed up the mood at training at Melwood yesterday following their first victory of the season: “It’s nice to be in control of our own destiny and not have anyone have games in hand over us”. Captain Steven Gerrard added, “Who would have thought that at this stage of the season we’d be masters of our own fate? To be this close: we can finally dare to dream.” “We go again. Just 37 more times.”
