hua hin, THAILAND Two events are set to take place next week which will be of interest to many of the expat and resident community in the area, with a presentation by the people behind the new international school being built near Black Mountain on Monday, and the first ever networking event by the British Chamber Of Commerce Thailand (BCCT) being held next Friday. Dealing with the second of these first, the BCCT event (see ad on page 5) is billed as the Western Seaboard Networking Evening, and is being held on Friday 5th September at the Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa from 6.30 to 9.30pm; the resort is located north of Hua Hin on the eastern side of Phetkasem Road. There is a fee of 200 baht which includes snacks and drinks, and bookings can be made to attend on the BCCT website at members.bccthai.com. There is also an associated friendly golf tournament at Springfield Royal Golf and Country Club on Saturday 6th September, green fee only 1000 baht plus caddie – please contact Michael Van Amelsvoort on 081 837 7877 to book your place. The presentation for the new international school will take place on Monday 1st September at the Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort, south of the town centre on the east side of Phetkasem Road, from 6.30pm, and is free for any interested parties to attend. Building has already commenced on the site and the school is expected to partially open in 2015, but full information will be available at the presentation and over the coming months. It is certainly another exciting development for the area and further illustrates the potential this region has for residents, expats, businesses, tourists and families alike.

Buffet, born in 1930, Nebraska USA, is renowned for his investing and business acumen. As I write this the current going price for a share in his company, Berkshire Hathaway, is $205,000, which is the same price as a family home in some parts of America. This is quite a difference from the original $7 price in 1962! With share prices stepping over the $200,000 mark, the company is valued at about $322 billion which, astonishingly, is about the GDP of a country the size of Denmark! In addition to founding one of the largest US companies ever, Buffet is also well known for his frugal attitude when his own spending style is concerned. Despite his riches, he is noted for trying to maintain a relatively simple lifestyle and his philanthropist side shone through when he pledged to dedicate around 99% of his personal wealth to needy causes. As a result of his experience and success, (not to mentioned his infamous style of straight talking), Mr Buffet has provided useful nuggets of financial advice over the years, whether through articles, speeches or his letters to shareholders. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
suck it up! A word of caution for any expats who are planning on returning to the UK in the near future. You may want to ask family or friends to snap up a new powerful vacuum cleaner for you pending your arrival back home. Because you will be returning to a land where - from September 1st - vacuum cleaners of over 1600 watts will no longer be manufactured or imported. One of the great things about life in Thailand is that carpets are surplus to requirements. Unless you really have a thing about them it is much more practical to go with tiled, or even teak wood flooring. A quick sweep with a cheap broom, and a few swipes with a string mop are all that is needed to keep floors clean. Indeed wood and laminate floorings have taken off big style in recent years in the UK, but good hardwood is too expensive here for most people, and laminate doesn’t wear well when subjected to frequent washing. In addition to which some of us who live in first floor flats (or apartments) aren’t allowed hard flooring due to the noise factor. Which is fine by me - in this climate carpets are more cosy, and as luck would have it I had to replace my vacuum cleaner last month anyway - with a new super charged model. So why the pendng ban on high powered cleaners? Yet another European Union directive, which aims to reduce the consumption of power and thereby help to save the planet. In a political climate which is already turning against EU membership this one really takes the biscuit. We can tolerate straight cucumbers and recycling bins. We can even live with the excess food packaging which helps to fill our recycling bins. But taking away our super suction Hepa filtered dust busters could be the final straw. No doubt domestic goddesses all over the UK will vote for UKIP, (the UK Independence Party, who’s only policy so far is to get us out of Europe.) It all brought back a distant memory of life - and cleaning rituals - in Thailand. At the turn of the Millenium a Dutch couple who owned the Pattana Guest House tipped me off about a stock of roller mop buckets on sale in HuaHin

Shopping Mall. This was indeed good news. The string mops are fine, but my ladies who cleaned used ordinary buckets for the job, and had to wring out the mops by hand all the time. A roller bucket would surely make life a little easier, especially on their hands. So off I went to the Mall. With hindsight I should have realised the error of my ways when the lady on the checkout asked me what the strange looking item was for. But undeterred I bore it home, and proceeded to give a training session on its’ use. To be fair to her, MamaSan did make the right noises and conceded that it was indeed a great invention. She even tried to persuade the other girls to use it - or at least I think she did. But in the end it proved to be a technological step too far. Clearly the old manual wringing out ways were the best, and I should have invested in supplies of staff hand cream instead. If this weeks word sounds painful, it’s because it probably was. ‘Castrato’ was the term for a male singer who was castrated before puberty so that he kept a soprano or alto voice. Nowadays budding singing stars only have to sacrifice themselves to the judges on TV talent shows.

Bear left at the top of the concrete and follow gravel track to the car park with a steep right hand turn as you enter the car park. Turn LEFT at first traffic lights and zero odometer. At 0.7 km turn LEFT signed Pak Nam Pran, follow road and bear RIGHT at 1.1 km. continue crossing the railway line and at 4.2 km turn RIGHT at T junction (HHH sign).
