hua hin, THAILAND The presentation held this week at the Intercontinental Resort to showcase and discuss the Hua Hin International School was well attended and informative, with around one hundred interested parties there. Of the five directors behind the project, four were in attendance, and the meeting was presented by one of them, Mr Graham Sullivan. The group are behind the series of St Andrews schools in Bangkok and other areas of Thailand, although they were at pains to point out that while the new school will be built and operated using all their previous experience, it will not be a St Andrews school due to an agreement with another partner in the existing schools. The plan they outlined is to open the new school in August 2015 for children up to age ten/eleven initially (Early Years and Primary), although if there are enough children aged eleven and above wanting to enrol, the second phase (Secondary/Middle School) will be pushed forward to also open at the same time. The location of the new school is opposite the Black Mountain Water Park. Ballpark fees have been released, which will be in the region of 150,000 baht per term, with three terms per year. The presentation stressed the high quality of both the education that will be available as well as the facilities and learning environment, to the same high standard as has been achieved at the well known Bangkok Patana School. weird NEWS scotland Scot saves £200 on food, drink and taxis with fake ‘ginger discount card’ A cheeky redhead has been using a fake ‘ginger discount card’ in shops, bars and taxis across Aberdeen – and he’s saved £200 doing so. Richard Macrae was given the laminated card as a gift for his 30th birthday as a joke by a friend. To his surprise, however, amused shopkeepers and bar staff have been agreeing to take money off his purchases – and Richard’s even built up a reputation. ‘It comes out with me more than my bank card. My reputation precedes me: once I was asked by a security guard if I was the ‘ginger discount guy’,’ he told The Scotsman. ‘I’ve saved a couple of hundred pounds maybe, with money off booze, taxis, food and club entries. Over four years it fairly builds up.’ A barman at one of Richard’s favourite pubs said Richard was ‘a good laugh’ and said he thought the card was ‘brilliant’. ‘I gave him the same discount that we would for students,’ revealed the Jamjar Pub’s Rik Gillespie. Richard, a comic book illustrator, says that people have been asking him where they can get similar discount cards. ‘Plenty of folk ask about getting one,’ he said. ‘It’s not even just ginger people. canada The Canadian town of Vulcan is trying to crowdfund a USS Enterprise. Well, sort of Ever wished Star Trek’s famous USS Enterprise was actually real? Well it could happen if this Canadian town ever had its way – not to mention a whole lot of cash. The appropriately-named Vulcan, in Alberta – population 1,836 – has launched a campaign to build a real, actual, fully-functioning USS Enterprise, in keeping with their annual Star Trek celebration known as Spock Days. And they’ve even taken to crowdfunding via Indiegogo to apparently achieve their dream – at a cost of just $1.1 trillion (around £550 billion) The campaign claims it is initially seeking $2bn for the chance to ‘fund important research into the creation, and development, of warp-drive technology.’ ‘Upon reaching our initial funding goal we will construct a research centre in Vulcan that will become a repository for everything we, as a species, know about faster-thanlight travel, gravity control and more,’ the fundraisers add. All sound too good to be true? Well that’s probably because it is – since the Indiegogo fund has been revealed to be nothing more than a clever bit of marketing to attract tourism to what is described as ‘the Star Trek capital of Canada’. However, as the site points out: ‘The campaign is meant to be filled with fun, fantasy and generate discussion and attention. Just imagine if we really COULD build the Enterprise!’ Clearly some people do seem keen to see a real version of the craft, since the venture has so far raised over $2,000 (£1,100) – all of which, the tourist board assures us, will be returned to those who donated it. And there we were getting all excited too…

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
talking proper, like.... There once was a time when all BBC broadcasters spoke with that clipped upper crust British accent which we associate with Eton and the Queen. Thankfully those days are long gone, and regional accents are now perfectly acceptable. But unfortunately standards have slipped a few more notches, and although we may feel more comfortable with modern BBC English, some of their presenters seem distinctly uncomfortable with the pronunciation and delivery of it. Granted you might not notice any glaring mistakes on BBC World. Presumably only the cream of the crop make it to the dizzy heights of worldwide TV broadcasting. But most days I tune in to my local BBC radio station as the only reliable source of information about what’s on in my area. As well as that much needed information, (our local rag the Hull Daily Mail being as much use as a chocolate fireguard) there is the added bonus of hearing rookie newsreaders making the kind of mistakes which make you either laugh out loud or scream at the radio. Sports commentators especially have always had a tricky job, with football matches a particular challenge, giving rise to games of two halves and ‘they think it’s all overs’, and it’s a football match or two which provide our first recent broadcasting error. But first a little background to the event is needed in order to set the scene. Regular readers may recall that Hull City FC finally made it to a Wembley Cup Final earlier this year. OK so they lost - but as a result of their league status were entered into the Europa League, which began with an away match to Lokeren in Belgium last month. On leaving the Lokeren game Hull supporters were escorted by police past a bar known to be used by local football hooligans, and were attacked. Bottles thrown you know the kind of thing. Needless to say there was much concern about the return match in Hull the following week, and with some 1,400 Lokeren fans due to arrive here all the stops were pulled out to ensure that our visitors had a good time and were kept occupied and safe. for the return game one local BBC radio newsreader announced that ‘a number of (Hull) fans were injured in the first legover in Lokeren last week.’. The unfortunate woman was clearly reading from a script, and went uncorrected, uttering the same ‘legover’ word in her next live broadcast. Maybe a typo in her script had omitted the space between ‘leg’ and ‘over’, but it’s easy to conclude that she had been set up. Either way she was obviously reading parrot fashion without thinking about meaning. Then there are the newsreaders who dither and stumble over words. Even local place names are mispronounced, with one unfortunate soul making three attempts at a well known street name. Can’t they read for heavens sake? But sometimes mistakes can make a mundane news item a bit more colourful, as was the case with a report on the marriage of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who ‘managed to avoid the glaze of the papers’. A first for the couple in more ways than one. By the way - in case you are wondering how Hull City FC fared in the Europa League, it’s something we would rather not talk about. Word of the week is ‘contumely’ - which sounds like an adjective and means insolent or insulting language or treatment. Rudeness or contempt. The word is in fact used as a noun, as in ‘Fred should not be treated contumely’.

glasgow, scotland Former Manchester United Scotsman, David Moyes, is reportedly under intensive care in a Glasgow hospital after a prolonged fit of laughing left his life in serious danger.
