roadworks cause accidents, confusion and protests

hua hin, THAILAND The ongoing attempts by the local authorities to try and fix Hua Hin’s traffic problems have sparked protests and widespread criticism from both Thai and foreign residents in recent weeks, with a particular focus on the wide divider that has been constructed outside the Selasian School next to Market Village. The stretch of Phetkasem Road running from Soi 35 by Klai Kang Won Palace south beyond the flyover has been an increasing traffic problem since Market Village was first built, as clearly no or inadequate plans were made to cope with the traffic the shopping mall would generate, nor it seems for the rapid growth of the town in general. There is, it seems, now a plan, but clearly while the extensive work is being carried out, it is both difficult to see how it will improve traffic flow as well as creating potential for more accidents. With work continuing on the Canal Road, the Soi 112 area and long stretches of Phetkasem Road, the short term problems are mainly safety concerns, and the lack of adequate warning signs, cones and lighting, at night in particular, are key factors that need addressing. While the protests are understandable, we believe it would not be fair to judge the effectiveness or wisdom of the work until it is complete, but we do believe that greater attention needs to be made to reducing confusion and accident risk while the work is ongoing, whether that requires more traffic police, temporary traffic lights or simply better signage and lighting in the areas concerned. We must also hope that the work is complete by the time the giant Bluport Mall near Soi 102 and the water park near Soi 112 are finished, as these will generate more traffic.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. Sinclair Lewis, in ‘Main Street’, 1920: This week it is..... The whole kit and caboodle “...and some of these college professors are just about A collection of things. The words kit and caboodle have rather similar as bad, the whole kit and bilin’ of ‘em are nothing in God’s world but socialism in disguise!” meanings. A kit - is set of objects, as in a toolkit, or what a soldier - The whole (or whool) boodle From J. Neal’s, ‘Down-Easters’, 1833: would put in his kit-bag. A caboodle (or boodle) - is an archaic term meaning “I know a feller ‘twould whip the whool boodle of ‘em an’ give ‘em six.” group or collection, usually of people. There are several phrases similar to the whole kit and From Bangor Daily Whig And Courier, Maine, 1839: caboodle, which is first recorded in that form in 1884. “A whole squad have got to permit to see you. Most of them are of US origin and all the early citations Who are they? are American. Caboodle was never in common use I don’t know, a whole boodle of them.” outside the USA and now has died out everywhere, apart - The whole caboodle From the Ohio State Journal, 1848: from its use in this phrase. - The whole kit - the whole of a soldier’s necessaries, “The whole caboodle will act upon the recommendation the contents of his knapsack. From Grose’s Dictionary of the Ohio Sun.” Which brings us finally to the whole kit and caboodle of the Vulgar Tongue, 1785. From the Syracuse Sunday Standard, New York, Nov, - The whole kit and boodle Although this citation is slightly later than that of the 1884: final ‘whole kit and caboodle’, it’s worth including as it “More audiences have been disappointed by him and gives a 19th-century version of the meaning of the term. by the whole kit-and-caboodle of his rivals.” It may still be a step along the way - either unrecorded It is most likely that these phrases were in use before 1888 or recorded in an, as yet, undiscovered simultaneously and that there isn’t a clear parentage of work. This piece, titled ‘The Origin of Boodle’, is from one to another. ‘Kit and caboodle’ had the advantage of The Dunkirk Observer-Journal, New York, September the alliterative ‘k’ sound and that’s doubtless why it has outlasted the others, which are now all fallen out of use. 1888: “It is probably derived from the Old-English word bottel, What we can’t confirm is that the word caboodle migrated a bunch or a bundle, as a bottel of straw. “The whole from boodle in order to sound better when matched kit and boodle of them” is a New England expression with kit. It is possible that that’s what happened, but in common use, and the word in this sense means the the dates of the known citations don’t support it. Whole whole lot. Latterly, boodle has come to be somewhat kit and caboodle, (1884) is recorded before whole kit synonymous with the word pile, the term in use at the and boodle, (1888) and whole caboodle comes well gaming table, and signifying a quantity of money. In before both, in 1848. Perhaps that’s just the inadequacy the gaming sense, when a man has “lost his boodle”, of either records or research and that citations with the he has lost his pile or whole lot of money, whatever appropriate dates will emerge later. amount he happened to have with him.” - The whole kit and boiling (or bilin’)

cashING in The Financial Benefits of Being an Expat.

Every week in this article Helen Couldrey, a financial consultant with the deVere Group, and also a qualified English lawyer, will give you tips and ideas of how to take advantage financially of being an expat. Helen has clients in Bangkok, Hua Hin and ChaAm who she helps to maximise the financial benefits of living overseas. the latte factor We all make financial decisions everyday… some big, some small, and some just verging on the ridiculous! (Yes, that inflatable pool speaker system….what were you thinking!) Regardless of what financial decisions we make, one of the most important things to consider is the actual thought process behind that decision. Was there any thought process at all, or was that item purchased by just going through the motions? Which leads me onto the key message of this week’s article: that habitual, unconscious spending can be financially dangerous… very dangerous indeed. This type of unchecked spending is often referred to as ‘The Latte Factor’. When I used to live in London my morning rituals were as follows: buy the paper (£1), jump on the tube (£5), buy a café latte (£2), buy some breakfast (£2). That’s a stonking £10 before I’ve even said good morning to my first colleague… A quick £6 glass of wine after work, another £5 to get home…. Over the course of the working year that’s more than £5,000 with everything combined, which no doubt could be much better spent. Habitual, Unconscious Spending Can Be Dangerous. When you think of the money we waste on non-essential,

habitual purchases the mind boggles. However, putting aside just a few hundred Baht or a few dollars every day rather than splurging it on non-essentials such as drinks, magazines, snacks etc. can make a huge difference between getting richer and staying financially static. You can very simply remedy this needless spending by sitting down and reviewing your financial decisions on a regular basis. You don’t have to change your lifestyle completely or cut out every last little luxury but thinking strategically about where your money goes will help you prevent frivolous or unnecessary purchases. Just think; short term sacrifice, long term gain. Reviewing Investment Spending And it’s not just the non-essential physical items that we sometimes flit our money away on. Many are also guilty of flitting their money away each month by not reviewing the charging structures surrounding investments. Having investments of any type usually incurs charges but are you sure that the structures you already have in place are the most cost effective? If not then you may be wasting some of your hard earned cash by not exploring other investment options. For anyone who has investments, giving them a health check every so often is never a bad idea.

scottish independence Thai Immigration have advised that in the event of a breakup of the Union, Scottish nationals holding British passports will have one week to exit Thailand to return to Scotland and obtain a Scottish passport with a new Thai visa In a related story, the Scottish Passport Office have advised that they expect to be inundated with passport applications so you should allow 3 months to receive your new Scottish passport. In a further story, the Scottish Inland Revenue have said that non resident Scots remaining in Scotland for more than one month in any calendar year will be liable to tax on all their savings, properties and pensions. And finally, legislation passing through the Houses of Parliament to ban the wearing of burkhas in public in England will be modified to ban the wearing of kilts too. If Scotland gets independence what will the Duke of Edinburgh be called? “The Prince formally known as”? Of course, the real fear for Alex Salmond is that if he takes a battering in the referendum on the 18th then the Scots will probably eat him... Sending David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband to convince Scotland to vote no in the referendum is a bit like asking Oscar Pistorius to kick a door down with his blades on... Finally, something the UK has learned from their special relationship with America. If Scotland goes independent they can just invade them and take the oil.

jacobite tipping In an interesting diversion from the Scottish referendum debates, the Scottish Jacobite Society has announced that it would like to see Scotlands’ border extended 174 miles south. Founded in 1748, two years after the defeat of Jacobite Bonnie Prince Charlie at the Battle of Culloden, the Society was a secret one which remained loyal to the Prince. Now, with its’ cloak of secrecy lifted, it wants to take in part of Yorkshire far enough south to include the village of Flamborough. Flamborough is an area of great natural beauty. Home to many kinds of seabirds, its’ cliffs stick out into the North Sea as a little pointy bit on the map between the resorts of Scarborough to the north, and Bridlington to the south, to form Flamborough Head. The Scottish Jacobite Society claims that moving the boundary would enable people from west and south Yorkshire to make day trips to Scotland, thus saving a lot of journey time. And if that sounds slightly crazy, the reaction of one or two Flamborough residents should leave you in no doubt at all about the state of a nation which some Scots want to devolve themselves from. A local radio reporter was despatched to Flamborough to ask villagers what they thought of becoming part of Scotland. The reporter found a group of elderly residents who were waiting for a bus, and on being asked how she felt about being part of Scotland one dear lady said that the weather would be worse. Personally I would oppose the plan for a more sensible reason. I wouldn’t want to have the hassle of border controls just to visit Scarborough for a day. Meanwhile last weekend Hull folk took to the streets for the cities’ annual Freedom Festival, which commemorates the work of Hull lad William Wilberforce, who was instrumental in achieving the abolition of slavery way back when. As with any large festival of music and performing arts there are three important needs to be met - sufficient beer, public transport, and toilets. Some of which

have been a bit lacking in previous years. But again local radio was on the ball, with one presenter making frequent pleas for ‘beer, buses and bogs’ in the run up to the three day event. Despite the further drop in BBC standards his pleas seemed to work. There’s really nothing quite like the sight of rows of Portaloos along cobbled streets awash with rain and beer on a sodden Saturday night in Hull. Almost as common in these parts is the sight of piles of horse ‘manure’ for want of a better word, which regularly appear on grassed areas and parkland. This nation wide problem has given rise to a new word, which probably isn’t even in your dictionary yet. ‘Fly-grazing’ is the practice of tethering horses on private property. A bit like ‘fly-tipping’, but with an end product which is at least bio-degradable.

Football agents return to hibernation

england AFTER a summer of frenzied activity, football agents have returned to their slumber on huge piles of money. Immediately after the transfer window closed, the agents spread their black leathery wings and took flight to warmer climes where they will remain in their underground cave homes until January. Agent-watcher Tom Booker said: “It’s quite amazing to observe the migration patterns of the agent. “As soon as the football season ends, the flock arrives. For several weeks they will circle big-name players and clubs excitedly with their distinctive call of ‘Harry Redknapp, Harry Redknapp’. “Then, as soon as they have accumulated a sufficiently large heap of money to serve as bedding for their huge reptilian bodies, they head for the Caribbean before they

are forced to actually watch a game of football. “Between now and January they will snooze atop piles of crisp twenties. If they’re woken out of season, they’ll force you to take Niko Kranjcar or Danny Gabbidon on loan.” This coming January is expected to be a boom for the lascivious agents, as well as there being a shift from their traditional return to London, with many

of them expected to choose Manchester for their return to action; some are even speculating that their mating call will alter to ‘Van Gaal, Van Gaal’ in the belief that their nests will be bountifully filled. Despite agents being widely regarded as a pest, their mating ritual of buying champagne for tables of promiscuous women in vile city clubs remains extremely effective.
