hua hin, THAILAND For our British readers, the significance of the poppy will be well known, as it has been used as the symbol for the Royal British Legion’s annual fund raising efforts for decades. Following the end of the Great War, World War 1, in 1918, it was decided to set a day to remember the hundreds of thousands of soldiers who had given their lives for their country, named Remembrance Day, and in 1919 the first of these was observed. The official date and time for this is the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, when a two minutes silence is observed, although official ceremonies now normally take place on the Sunday closest to that date. From around 1922 imitation poppies were sold to raise money to help injured soldiers and the families of lost soldiers, and this continues to the present day. This practice has been going on in Hua Hin for several years with the approval of the Royal British Legion, with poppies and official collection boxes in selected locations; this year is a special year for many reasons, not least because it marks 100 years since the start of World War 1. This year you can buy your poppies from three locations; Hua Hin Ham, Bacon and Meat Company in Soi 41, Ye Olde Buffalo Tavern at the Chomsin Road/ Naresdamri Road junction, and El Murphys in Soi Selakam. All money collected is transferred to the RBL, and you can find out more about how the money is used on their website at www.britishlegion.org.uk. It is particularly poignant this year as 2014 marks the 70th Anniversary of the disastrous Operation Market Garden which attempted to secure the Rhine bridges at Arnhrm and Nijmegen between 17 and 25th September 1944. An estimated 17,000 casualtieswere reported from mainly British and US forces, the majority from airborne units of 1st Airborne Division (British) and 101st Airborne Division (USA).

technology overload Happy Halloween and welcome back to AWOL - I hope you enjoyed the break as much as we did! As our return coincides with Halloween it seems like a good time to offer a word of caution on the wisdom of burying your Grandma with her mobile phone. In case you missed it, that is exactly what one family in the UK did three years ago. The deceased Grandma had apparently been very attached to her mobile, and especially loved texting. So it seemed like a good idea to bury the phone with her so that family members could carry on texting her in the hereafter. Obviously they couldn’t have known whether there would be a signal down below, and didn’t expect replies anyway, but that didn’t deter them. And it probably cut down on the need for those tedious trips to the cemetary with flowers. So imagine their shock when, almost three years after her demise, replies began to reach them from Grandmas’ phone. Messages assuring them that they were being watched over kind of thing. The mystery was solved when it was discovered that Grandmas’ phone number had been re-allocated to another user, despite assurances by the network provider that would never happen. The new owner of the number, receiving some texts intended for Grandma, thought he should reply. As you would - it’s only polite after all. What is really worrying is how anyone could imagine that a phone battery could last that long in the first place, let alone believe anything that a phone provider tells them. Undeterred by the potential pitfalls of technology however our very own Queen - Elizabeth that is - has sent her first Tweet. All very progressive and 21st century. But wouldn’t it be wiser to leave all that stuff to the younger generations of Royals? I doubt that she was amused by some of the Twitter responses calling for her abdication. Still on the subject of new technology - or in this case not quite so new - it had to happen didn’t it? You bought your first CD player 25 or so years ago, and soon realised

that CDs were becoming more readily available, easier to store, harder wearing, and cheaper than vinyl. In fact vinyl was disappearing fast. So you gradually replaced those scratchy 33’s with CDs and consigned your turntable to landfill. Over time you made the next move to i Players, digital downloads and the like, ignoring those strange geeks who continued to worship vinyl with all it’s hisses and blips. And now what happens? For the first time since 1996 sales of vinyl records are expected to exceed 1 million by the end of this year. So much for progress - the next thing we know we will be carrying around mobile phones the size of house bricks. This weeks word of the week could easily be used to describe those who continue to argue over Angkhor Wat - or at least those on the Thai side of it. At first glance ‘Irredentist’ would appear to describe a dentist armed with some kind of water torture implement. In fact it refers to a person who advocates the restoration to their country of any land which formerly belonged to it.
