hua hin, THAILAND The seafront area near the junction of Chomsin and Naresdamri Roads that has traditionally been where the fishermen bring in their catch but has also been a much needed car park, was finally closed to access this week, as work begins on a much announced and anticipated redevelopment. The plans for the area, estimated to cover about 4 rai (6400 square metres), are not completely known, but certainly one part of it is being devoted to seafood restaurants, which has led to speculation that the current restaurants operating on the old piers south of the area will be relocated, as there has been much dispute over their right to remain where they are. The future of these old pier establishments, which also include guesthouses, has been discussed for years, with many feeling that they are a charming attraction for the town, while others wish to see a genuine seafront promenade in their place. One issue that the redevelopment is already causing is the reduction in areas to park in the town centre, which has been a major problem for years; there have been some recent efforts by the authorities to reduce the number of spaces taken up by taxi and tour operators most notably on Damnoernkasem Road (Soi 61), but it is clear that the town desperately needs more capacity for parking, or a more draconian approach to those who prevent vehicles parking in the streets. Drivers and motorcyclists could also be encouraged to be more considerate when they park, while a more extensive and later running local public transport network might encourage more people to leave their vehicles at home, reducing both the pressure on parking, traffic and accidents. #wecanbutdream for anyone who is reading this online...
