hua hin, THAILAND The seafront area near the junction of Chomsin and Naresdamri Roads that has traditionally been where the fishermen bring in their catch but has also been a much needed car park, was finally closed to access this week, as work begins on a much announced and anticipated redevelopment. The plans for the area, estimated to cover about 4 rai (6400 square metres), are not completely known, but certainly one part of it is being devoted to seafood restaurants, which has led to speculation that the current restaurants operating on the old piers south of the area will be relocated, as there has been much dispute over their right to remain where they are. The future of these old pier establishments, which also include guesthouses, has been discussed for years, with many feeling that they are a charming attraction for the town, while others wish to see a genuine seafront promenade in their place. One issue that the redevelopment is already causing is the reduction in areas to park in the town centre, which has been a major problem for years; there have been some recent efforts by the authorities to reduce the number of spaces taken up by taxi and tour operators most notably on Damnoernkasem Road (Soi 61), but it is clear that the town desperately needs more capacity for parking, or a more draconian approach to those who prevent vehicles parking in the streets. Drivers and motorcyclists could also be encouraged to be more considerate when they park, while a more extensive and later running local public transport network might encourage more people to leave their vehicles at home, reducing both the pressure on parking, traffic and accidents. #wecanbutdream for anyone who is reading this online...

weird NEWS israel Bad smell sparks chain reaction of vomit in nightmare plane journey A plane journey from hell was forced to make an emergency landing after a strange odour sparked a chain reaction of vomit. The nightmarish scenes took place after take-off from Ben Gurion Airport in Israel on Friday night. A weird smell wafted its way through the US Airways cabin. Soon after passengers and crew members began spewing up and down the aisle. A total of 14 crew members and two passengers fell seriously ill – prompting the Philadelphia-bound flight to make an emergency landing in Rome. A number of people were taken to hospital and released soon after. US Airways maintenance crews are working to discover the source of the pungent odour.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
calendars, stamps and pharmacies You may have noticed our absence from your sois last week. In fact this year AWOL has made a pretty good effort to compete with Thailand in the holiday stakes, where there are more festival and holy days than you can keep track of. But to me December 5th has always been the most special of Thai days. To observe the reverence with which his subjects honour His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on his birthday, and for farang to be welcomed in sharing the experience, really demonstrates the warmth of Thai people, not to mention their obvious pride in their heritage. Maybe it’s because we no longer have the same level of respect for our own monarchy in the UK that makes December 5th in Thailand so special. I’m not an anti UK royalist, and unfortunately I’m old enough to remember when our National Anthem was always played in cinemas here, but those days are long gone, replaced by the constant scrutiny of the press which often does very little to endear us to our Queen and her family. So I wasn’t really interested in keeping the ‘glossy’ 2015 calendar of Prince George baby photos which was a recent freebie in my daily newspaper. The fact that I would personally prefer to see dogs on a calendar may also have something to do with it. Whatever - I didn’t need the thing hanging on my kitchen wall for the next 12 months. Which is where Wal-Marts’ UK chain of supermarkets comes in, in the form of Asda - scene of some violent exchanges and fisticuffs over really big TV’s and other bargains on Black Friday. And it was here in my local Asda that I was peacefully queueing some time later with the unwanted calendar in my trolley. On finally reaching the check-out lady I asked her if she wanted a Prince George calendar. ‘Yes I do’ she replied, ‘but I’m not allowed to take it.’ Now we all know that people like the Police and Government officials of all descriptions are not allowed to accept gifts from the public, which is another area in which the UK differs a little from Thailand. Or at least is supposed to. But I can now

I needed to stock up on postage stamps, only to discover that they can only be sold at the cigarette kiosk, and not at the check outs. The check out lady thought that this rule was to do with the transporting of the Queens’ image. Something which I would have accepted without question in Thailand. But a fair bit of Googling has failed to come up with any reason for this ruling, which may well be of Asdas own making and purely for their own convenience. It reminded me though of my first visit to Thalland when I needed some stamps. Stationed in Patpong 2, and still unfamiliar with my surroundings, I set off down Surawang Road in search of a Post Office. You would think that on such a busy main road you would eventually stumble across one, but no. Almost two hours later I tottered back to base, hot and flustered, only to be told that ‘pharmacy sell stamp.’ Which shows that in Thailand you start learning from day one, and that their policy on the sale of the monarchs image can be surprisingly more lenient than that of the UK.
