hua hin, THAILAND It has been widely reported that the former Newcastle United, Aston Villa and West Ham United midfielder has agreed to become the new manager of our local football team, and was due in the area yesterday (Thursday 8th January) to officially sign the contract. The 40 year old Peruvian had been looking for a managerial position for some time in the UK but has clearly ended that search, and taken on the task of securing promotion that the team just missed out on in the season just ended. The deal was completed after financial backing was secured with unnamed sponsors, Siam Sport quoted Hua Hin team manager Rujipas Pinkaew as saying. Nolberto ‘Nobby’ Solano became something of a cult figure at Newcastle after spending almost a decade at the club in two spells, playing 314 games and scoring 38 goals, and represented Peru on more than 90 occasions. He was known for his hard-working attitude on the pitch and wand of a right boot during his career. After leaving the top tier of English football, he went on to play in Greece, his Peruvian homeland, Leicester, Hull and Hartlepool before retiring in 2012. As well as the appointment of Solano it has been announced that there will be a number of changes to the coaching team and squad that won their division last season, but failed to get promotion via the ‘Champions League’. Hua Hin City supporters will be in for another interesting season, as 2015 is meant to see a new stadium for the club as well, and a number of new players from abroad, with talk of several Brazilians being included. The new season is due to start in the middle of February, and once announced you will be able to follow the fixtures and results every week in AWOL.

weird NEWS usa Couple get trapped in unlocked cupboard for two days while ‘high on drugs’ A couple who were ‘high on drugs’ managed to become trapped in a janitor’s cupboard for two days, only to find it was unlocked the whole time. Amber Campbell, 25, and John Arwood, 31 broke into the Marine and Environmental Science Center in Daytona, Florida and found a closet where they allegedly smoked crystal meth and crack cocaine. In their intoxicated state the pair forgot how to exit the cupboard, and were trapped inside for two days before they finally decided to call the police on Tuesday. Officers went to the building where the strong smell of excrement led them to the entrapped couple. Upon freeing them, the police found two days’ worth of faeces and urine in the cupboard, along with drug smoking paraphernalia. Ms Campbell and Mr Arwood could only enjoy their freedom momentarily, as they were instantly arrested for trespassing. Officers were unable to find a way to lock the door, and could not figure out how the pair became trapped in the cupboard.
australia Family reunion with a difference – young man is saved from drowning by long-lost father Benji Baker, 21, had hoped to calm his nerves by kayaking just off Bondi beach in Australia before reuniting with his father, Phil, at a pre-arranged meeting. While out on the water, he suffered an epileptic fit. His father, who happened to be walking along the beach, dived into the water to help out what he perceived to be simply a group of sea-kayakers in trouble. Phil Baker spoke of the crazy coincidence: ‘I took off my T-shirt and threw my keys on to the sand, diving into the water, I saw there were two instructors on board and a man lying across the middle. He was shaking violently. Linking arms with one instructor, I helped to carry the man out of the water.’ Mr Baker said: ‘I asked the instructor, “What’s his name?” He replied, “Benji”.In an instant I knew that stranger was my boy. I checked his breathing and pulse and said, ‘It’s me, your dad. You’re going to be OK.’ While Benji was born in Australia, he grew up in the UK with his mother after his parents split up. Sadly, father and son had lost contact despite attempts at email conversations during which time Phil’s son was diagnosed with epilepsy.

New Year is a time dogged by superstition. When is it safe to put the new calendar up for instance? How long is too long to leave up the decorations? Once upon a time we even hung on to those unwanted gifts for fear of being outed by some malicious little elf who was sure to spill the beans. Unlike Thai people who have no qualms at all about ‘re-gifting’ - in other words passing it on. Sometimes even without unwrapping it. But things are changing in England, and re-gifting has suddenly become more acceptable. Which is fine if you have a very diverse circle of family and friends. For now I’ll stick with the charity shop option. Thankfully though my ‘wish list’ has never included an Xbox or Playstation, and never will. Unlike the many thousands of children who received those rather expensive bits of kit for Christmas, only to be left ‘devastated’ when hackers took down the internet connections needed for them to function. This well timed piece of Christmas Day hacking reportedly left Christmas wrecked, teenagers in tears, and parents screaming for compensation. Come on folks - get a grip. Send the kids out with their skateboards and dust off the Scrabble.

Sunday 11th January 2015 PREMIER LEAGUE Man Utd v Southampton 23:00 Third versus fourth in what has been a surprising season for both teams to date; Van Gaal has done a good job in starting to rebuild the aging squad that Moyes inherited from Ferguson and we imagine most Red Devils fans are pleased with where the team finds itself. Southampton were widely expected to struggle after losing the manager and a number of key players to other teams in the summer, but Ronald Koeman has done an exceptional job and should be a strong contender for manager of the year, regardless of how the rest of the season pans out. The Saints went through a slight wobble a few weeks ago but seem to be back on track now, and this will be a good competitive game with both eager for the win, while having an eye on the difficult games that Chelsea and Manchester City face and hoping to gain on both. A draw seems on the cards to us, which will suit the away side more than United, and we think the other results will see a further bunching of the teams in the top half.

galactic! Neptune cleared over World Cup bid irregularities
france FIFA announced this morning that their internal inquiry has formally cleared the successful 2022 World Cup bid from the planet Neptune of all corruption charges. ‘This is great news,’ explained Tharak the Mighty, one of the Neptunian sentient gas beings that fronted the bid. ‘This should finally put to bed all the allegations and lies that have been made against us’. He continued: ‘Just because I threatened to smite your puny, miserable planet with the mighty Sword of Krun Tor if we didn’t win, it does not mean that anything untoward took place’. The bid has long been the subject of intense debate. Many experts have expressed concerns that the planet was ‘ill equipped’ to host a major sporting event.

Professor Brian Cox for instance, explained: ‘Neptune’s average surface temperature of -200° C would make playing conditions very difficult, as would the abundance of methane in the lower atmosphere.’ ‘But in particular, its dynamic storm systems with wind speeds reaching 1300 mph would make it very challenging indeed. It’s hard to imagine Wayne Rooney controlling a football in that sort of climate,
although frankly it’s quite difficult to imagine that in normal conditions as well.’ Others claim that the planet lacks even the most basic hotels and public transport services. And at a distance of over 2.75 billion miles from earth, direct flights are expected to be at a premium. Ryanair however, have recently announced plans for a new service, landing at a nearby airport just 40km outside Paris. However, FIFA are adamant and President Sepp Blatter said: ‘This is the end of things as far as I’m concerned. Those who continue to criticise the Neptune World Cup are living in the Stone Age. After all, it’s no more silly to host a World Cup on a distant, gaseous world than it would be to host one in the desert in the middle of summer, is it?’
