spate of elephant attacks in khao yai national park
hua hin, THAILAND A spate of attacks by elephants in the region are thought to have been triggered by the increasing intrusion by humans on the land and roads, as well as a growing disregard for the animals and their habitat when people are visiting. In the first ten days of this year, a wild bull elephant has damaged four vehicles and caused alarm among tourists at Khao Yai National Park. On Saturday, just as a family arrived at the park to celebrate National Children’s Day, the elephant put two feet on their car’s hood. The hood was badly dented and the windshield fractured. On 1st January, the elephant damaged three vehicles. It stomped on a pickup causing a big dent, while another pickup and a taxi sustained minor damage. Fortunately, no one has been harmed in these two encounters with the big pachyderm. However last month, an elephant fatally attacked Poonsap Noknuam, 65, while she was heading home with her husband on a motorcycle on the Hua Hin-Pa La Ou Road. A passer-by chased the elephant away by honking a horn, but Poonsap died on her way to a hospital. Patarapol Maneeorn, a government veterinarian who has monitored elephants and other wild animals at the park, said elephants normally did not attack vehicles but this one might be stressed. “In the mating season, the elephant might have developed some stress. Moving vehicles might have added to the tension,” he said. Locals believe wild elephants can become aggressive because teenagers on bikes challenge or tease them with loud honks, while the amount of traffic has also increased considerably through the park.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
Dihydrogen monoxide anybody? Those of you reading this in Thailand will have no choice than to drink bottled water. Even if you have one of those posh purifying gadgets at home, there will still be times when you need the bottled stuff. But of course bottled water is also ‘de rigeur’ in places where water straight from the tap is perfectly safe to drink. Even now in the depths of our winter, it is common to see people wandering around with their personal water supply, while in the summer consumption reaches epic proportions. Big business indeed, and with prices to match in the UK as I discovered recently. Normally quite happy to glug my recommended daily dose of H2O from the tap, I needed to take some medication while out and about, and the smallest cheapest bottle to hand cost 89 pence for 250 ml. Call it 90 pence which is around 45 baht. So what do you get in these parts for your money? Admittedly a reputedly good brand - Buxton Natural Mineral water, with a clever lid which prevents the water slopping down your front on the bus and probably makes up some 95 % of the cost. Otherwise the ingredients bear an uncanny resemblance to our mains supply, including all the ‘iums’ - calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, as well as the naturally occurring chlorides, sulphates and nitrates. A comparison with the published ingredients from a typical UK water company shows that although fluoride is added to our mains supplies, naturally occurring aluminium and iron are often removed. Which leaves only the possibility of some contamination by lead, copper and zinc, any of which may still be present in domestic piping. So if we had universal blue plastic pipes here there should be no risk at all. Isn’t it strange that Thailand has the perfect piping solution with little means of ensuring drinkable water to pass through it?
This year we will be taking an occasional look at some people of note from Hull. Yes - there have been a few believe it or not! Our first is the fearless and ground breaking Amy Johnson. Born in Hull in 1903, Amy began flying planes as a hobby, and quickly became a skilled pilot, making her first solo flight after only 16 hours tuition. By the age of 26 she had added a ground engineers licence to her pilots licence, the first woman in the UK to do so, and went on to become an aviation pioneer, setting several long distance flying records. It seems to have been inevitable that when World War 2 began Amy would put her skills in the air to good use, and it was while delivering an aircraft for the Air Transport Auxiliary that she was killed in January 1941 when her plane went down in the Thames. This weeks word is yet another ‘ium’. Caesium. A soft, silvery chemical element.

la la land LA Galaxy to create mini-Liverpool for Gerrard
usa AMERICAN soccer club LA Galaxy is to create a $12 million ‘Scouse-odome’ in the heart of California to make Steven Gerrard feel at home. Among the attractions of the simulated city on the edge of LA will be a specially dug River Mersey using water imported from the actual Mersey and a Brookside-style cul-de-sac. Further features will include a Tom O’ Connor theme park, a golf course exclusively occupied by Jimmy Tarbuck and Stan Boardman and a holographic image of Bill Shankly’s head shining like the sun. Half of the houses in the Scouse-ODome will be painted red, the other half blue in keeping with Gerrard’s home town. The ex-Liverpool Captain will be housed in a magnificently cosy two-

up, two-down terraced house with a flat-screen TV broadcasting old episodes of Bread on a permanent loop.
