here we go again new scam hits town

hua hin, THAILAND AWOL has been informed that last weekend dozens of bars in the area were confronted by a gang of up to a dozen Thai men claiming to be employees of Cable Thai Holdings (CTH) and were met by demands for payments to be made for broadcasting live Premier League football to customers at their premises.

The men were carrying official looking CTH identity cards but were very reluctant to either have them examined or be photographed, instead insisting that the bar owners speak to ‘the boss in Bangkok’ on the phone; however no phone number was given, just an already connected mobile phone, with the person on the other end apparently confirming that some sort of licence fee or fine was due, as well as some sort of check being carried out on a computer to verify this. The business owners were then asked to accompany the group to Hua Hin police station and were told this was just ‘to sort the licences out’. Many owners agreed to do this, only to find themselves or their Thai staff who went, threatened with being held at the police station until payments were made, and we gather these varied between twenty and sixty thousand baht, and then being given a ‘licence’.

The CTH office in Hua Hin has denied any involvement in this, and has confirmed that no special licence and no extra payment is required for businesses to publically broadcast their programmes, just the business must be properly registered with CTH and pay for the appropriate package.

Even those who are not properly registered can just contact CTH Hua Hin to sort this out and may only have to pay a small fee to do so. Just to be clear, if you are approached by a group of Thai men in your business demanding money for some licence or telling you that you need to go to the police station, the chances are they are criminals trying to scam you.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is..... Top dog One who is dominant or victorious.

Top dog’ is synonymous with the similar, if now archaic, phrases, ‘upper dog’ and ‘over dog’. It is also the antonym of ‘under dog’ (now usually spelled as a single word) and its synonym, ‘bottom dog’.

We have here a golden opportunity for those who consider plausibility to be enough evidence to hang a phrase derivation on and the following explanation has been widely repeated. When wooden planks were sawn by hand, two men did the job using a two-handed saw.

The senior man took the top handle, standing on the wood, and the junior took the bottom, in the saw-pit below. Add to this the fact that the irons that were used to hold the wood were called dogs and that the bottom position was much the more uncomfortable, and we can jump from this scene to the origin of ‘top dog’ and ‘underdog’.

That may be true. The problem with it as an explanation is that no one has found evidence to back it up. There are printed references to saw-pits and to this form of work going back to the early 15th century in England and

the 19th century in America. None of these makes any mention of ‘top dog’ or ‘under dog’. It is hardly likely that everyone, including Shakespeare, who referred to sawpits in The Merry Wives of Windsor, 1600, would have ignored these colourful phrases had they been in use at the time. In fact, there are no known references to ‘top dog’ or ‘under dog’ in the context of wood sawing until well after the practise was superseded by mechanical sawing.

What citations there are to these terms that date from the days that the pits were still in use all refer to fights of some sort, particularly dog fights. The earliest record found of a figurative use of ‘top dog’ is a 20th century one, in The Speaker; a review of politics etc., 1900: “The most popular argument in favour of the war is that it will make the individual Briton top dog in South Africa.”

While the saw-pit theory as the origin of ‘top dog’ and ‘under dog’ is attractive, the complete lack of evidence to support it renders it as mere speculation. There appears to be little reason to doubt that ‘top dog’ had a literal derivation - ‘a dog that is top’.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

talk is cheap As the debate about licensing hours and Lao Khao continues, a new month brings with it a new crackdown announcement. This time on prostitution in illegal premises.

The stated aims, to tackle human trafficking and child prostitution, are unarguably worthy ones, but you have to wonder why illegal premises are allowed to exist in the first place.

Perhaps there is a clue in the other aim, which is to also address the problem of any police who turn a blind eye to illegal goings on.

It is already turning out to be quite an interesting year for Thailand, and I fear the worst for tea funds.

Meanwhile the UK begins to really rev up now for its’ general election in May, starting with a bit of a hissy fit between the BBC and our current leaders. In case this one passed you by, in the run up to our last general election, American style TV debates between major partys were introduced. Which was all fine with the said major partys before UKIP began to win seats.

Following threats from one party in particular not to participate in this years debates if UKIP were allowed to, auntie BBC dealt with the problem quite easily. The debates will go ahead regardless of which partys do or don’t turn up for them. A rather nice fait accompli which happened to coincide with an elaborate display in honour of the man who is still seen as responsible for winning Britain its’ freedom from oppression. Winston Churchill.

How many people can you think of who have had a re-enactment of their funeral? Even Richard 111 is still waiting for his.

Hopefully that sums up the current political state of the UK at the moment. Like Thailands’, you couldn’t make it up. At least we have that wonderfully camp new BBC 3 series about Bangkok Airport to keep us in touch with reality.

And now another peek into Hulls’ history. Not at a person this time, but a trawler. On February 8th 1974 the trawler ‘Gaul’ was lost at sea with all 36 crew. It was the biggest ever loss of life in the UK fishing fleet.

Coming just 18 months after being launched the Gaul disappeared without trace in the Barents Sea. To the people of Hull it was like the Titanic going down. Such a new modern trawler didn’t just disappear.

Accusations of Russian involvement were rife - this was still during the time of the Cold War - and the loss of the Gaul only compounded the outcries and grief of just 6 years earlier, when three other Hull trawlers were lost within two months.

It wasn’t until 1997 that the wreck was discovered, and despite two formal inquiries into the disaster over the years, the first of which concluded that heavy seas were the cause, many people still refuse to believe that the sinking was simply an accident.

weird NEWS usa Someone is letting out an igloo for just £7 a night on Airbnb Ever wanted to sleep in an igloo, but don’t possess the skills required to make one (or there just isn’t enough snow where you live)?

You’re wait is over, because someone is now offering one on AirBnB, and it’s yours for just £7 a night.

The igloo is situated in the garden of Pierre, who also built it, near Boston in Massachusetts.

Due to the massive snowfall the area has received recently, Pierre thought he could capitalise on the weather phenomenon by making a cosy little igloo that ‘comfortably fits one, or two if curled up’.

Payment includes the ‘use of a tarp and yoga mat to sleep on’ (but you’ll have to bring your own sleeping bag) and you can even use the kitchen and bathroom facilities in Pierre’s house.

Anyone eager to know what it is like to sleep inside a hollowed out ball of snow will have to be quick however, as the igloo is expected to melt as soon as spring arrives.

Ever since prehistoric humans first tripped out on hallucinogenic cacti and opium 9,000 years ago, people have been absolutely out of their gourds, University of Valladolid researchers revealed.

Associate professor Elisa Guerra-Doce reviewed archaeological literature from around the world, and found that many ancient human societies used hallucinogens, stimulants and other drugs regularly.

Even Europeans were out of their skulls on opium from around the sixth millennium BC. ‘Apart from its use as a food plant, there is also uncontested evidence for the exploitation of its narcotic properties,’ Guerra-Doce wrote.

Guerra-Doce’s research shows that magic mushrooms, hallucinogenic cacti, marijuana and opium were used around the world, alongside booze.

The new review, ‘Brings together data related to the early use of drug plants and fermented beverages all over the world,’ Guerra-Doce wrote.

Rampant consumerism celebrates 49th consecutive Super Bowl victory

usa Marketing professionals are celebrating yet another magnificent victory in yesterday’s Super Bowl XLIX, after securing unprecedented levels of coverage for their range of tawdry products.

In a match between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, which was won by one of them 28-24, all eyes were on the brands that could most successfully exploit their exposure to tens of millions of American wallets.
