desperate times lead to desperate measures
hua hin, THAILAND A Hua Hin woman was arrested last week, and confessed to having caused a number of motorists to have punctures after she had been systematically spilling nails on the road near her husband and son’s tyre repair business. Kesarin Channiam, 36, felt sorry for her husband and son that their business had been struggling, so devised and executed her plan by dropping the nails on the Pokklao Road along the railway from the railroad crossing to the Hua Hin railway station. Hua Hin police station chief Pol Col Chaiyakorn Srilardecho said his police station had received complaints that dozens of cars had suffered punctured tyres since January urged motorists whose tyres have been punctured in the area to file more complaints against the woman. Apparently she carried out the plan under the cover of darkness, but according to one report she was still spotted by an eyewitness, although other reports credit an undercover police operation for her capture. Police discovered a a box of nails in the storage compartment of Kesarin’s motorcycle of the same type as had punctured many vehicles’ tyres. While this kind of tactic to drum up more business has been used before in many countries, this is the first time we have heard of it happening in Hua Hin, and it could well be another sign of how desperate some Thais are getting as the Thai economy dwindles, most notably in tourism. While there clearly should be no tolerance of these kinds of actions, which potentially could cause fatal accidents, there must be some more understanding from those in charge that the continuing political situation and military rule is costing Thailand and its people millions of baht in lost earnings, as tourists and businesses choose to spend their time and money elsewehere, and it could well be that if the situation continues, we will see more signs of desperation like this.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Touch wood/Knock on wood Knock on wood This phrase is used by people who rap their knuckles on a piece of wood hoping to stave off bad luck. In the UK, the phrase ‘touch wood’ is used - often jokingly by tapping one’s head. The phrases are sometimes spoken when a person is already experiencing some good fortune and hope that it will continue - for example “I’ve been winning on every race - touch wood”. The derivation may be the association that wood and trees have with good spirits in mythology, or with the Christian cross. It used to be considered good luck to tap trees to let the wood spirits within know you were there. Traditions of this sort still persist in Ireland. The British version of the phrase - ‘touch wood’, predates the American ‘knock on wood’ and was itself preceded by a Latin version - ‘absit omen’, meaning ‘far be that omen from us’. This dates from at least the early 17th century, when it is quoted by John Heywood in his collections of proverbs. It isn’t clear when ‘touch wood’ began to be used as a token of good fortune but it must have been by 1850, when the academic correspondence

The rancher’s prize bull was missing from the section through which the railroad passed. The rancher only wanted to be paid the fair value of the bull. The case was scheduled to be tried before the justice of the peace in the back room of the general store. The city-slicker attorney for the railroad immediately cornered the rancher and tried to get him to settle out of court. He did his best selling job, and finally the rancher agreed to take half of what he was asking. After the rancher had signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn’t resist gloating a little over his success, telling the rancher, “You are really a country hick, old man, but I put one over on you in there. I couldn’t have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the caboose when the train went through your ranch that morning. I didn’t have one witness to put on the stand. I bluffed you!” The old rancher replied, “Well, I’ll tell you young feller, I was a little worried about winning that case myself, because that durned bull came home this morning.”

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
bang a gong March sees the grand re opening of the house in Hull where J Arthur Rank was born on 22nd December 1888. Film buffs will know the Rank name well - he was ‘the man behind the gong’ who founded Pinewood Studios and the Rank Organisation. But how did this son of a flour mill owner, deemed by his father Joseph to be not very bright at school, end up a movie mogul? It must have helped a bit that the family flour milling business wasn’t just any old tin pot venture. In 1875 Joseph Rank had pioneered steel roller milling to grind his flour, which was much more efficient than traditional stone milling. The business took off, and by the time J Arthur was born 13 years later the Ranks had become rich.

J Arthur was destined to follow in his fathers footsteps and carry on the family firm, which he did, albeit possibly a little reluctantly. He was also a devout Methodist, and by the 1930’s his church was becoming increasingly concerned about the corrupting influence of films on family life. So J Arthur Rank resolved to make his own family friendly (and no doubt morally correct) films, and along with two partners he founded the British National Films Co. In 1935 the new partnership bought Pinewood Studios, only to discover there were problems distributing Ranks’ first film - Turn of the Tide. At that time film distribution was tightly controlled by close links between the American and British film industries, with the result that 80% of all film screen time in Britain was taken up by American films. To someone as rich as Rank the answer was simple, he began to buy into existing film distribution systems, with the result that by 1942 the Rank Organisation had been formed and had bought up 619 of Britains cinemas. Rank Organisation productions included The Black Narcissus, Carve Her Name With Pride, and The Red Shoes, along with all the Carry On and Doctor series, and Norman Wisdom films. Not bad for a Hull lad whose father once called him a dunce! J Arthur Rank died on March 29th 1972. During his lifetime he had given 100 million pounds to Methodist causes, and the flour company had been amalgamated into Rank Hovis McDougall. By the 90’s his birthplace was derelict (as is the rather ugly old riverside Ranks mill building still.) But thanks to a campaign begun by a local radio presenter the house is habitable once more. Not - as many had hoped - as a museum of film. The city fathers deemed the property to be too far from the city centre to attract visitors, and for once they may be right. But at least it will again be a home. Word of the week is ‘sapphic’, which relates to lesbian love would you believe! The other promised word for this week was meant to be ‘oraceous’, but sadly there seems to be no definition for this word, so it appears that Terry Pratchett must have invented it. Oh well - can’t win them all.
