murder & tragedy fatal incidents in both hua hin and cha am
hua hin, THAILAND Last week saw two foreigners die in separate incidents locally, one a murder, the other a tragic accident. The first occurred in Cha Am on Thursday (2nd April) at Lek’s Restaurant Switzerland, where two Norwegian men, Lars Arne Fjeldsbo, 54, and Stine Somchai Husoy, 59, who were apparently business partners in Norway, argued over a loan that couldn’t be repaid. This ended when the older man fetched a gun from his motorbike and shot Fjeldsbo dead with two bullets behind the ear, before turning the gun and shooting himself in the face. Husoy survived and is in hospital under police guard. The second incident took place on Friday (3rd April) when, according to reports from a variety of sources, a Scottish man, Iain Mackay, 40, went to the pool shop and bar, Master Cues, run by the Thai girl he had been seeing, Patty Patrick, at around 3am, after drinking heavily, and then proceeded to smash what is presumed to be a window at the bar by kicking it; in doing so he tragically severed an artery in his leg which resulted in him bleeding to death, despite the best efforts of an ambulance crew and Hua Hin Hospital. Some reports have suggested that Mr Mackay was angry because he had seen Ms Patrick with another man, but she gave an interview to the press and stated that they had separated amicably and at his suggestion some time after his arrival in Thailand on 22nd March. Incidents such as these are not common in this area, which is why it is so surprising to have two so close to each other, but it is often said that high temperatures do lead to a statistical rise in murders and accidental deaths, however we would suggest that alcohol also played its part, certainly in Mr Mackay’s case, and probably in Cha Am too. We offer our sincerest condolences to all family and friends of the deceased.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Rumpy-pumpy Sexual intercourse, especially that of a casual and saucy nature. This reduplicated term sounds as though it might come from one of Shakespeare’s more baudy scenes, but is in fact of quite recent coinage. I can’t find any mention of it in print prior to the entry in the 1968 Scottish National Dictionary: Rump, Rumpie-pumpie, a jocular term for copulation. We don’t know who coined the term. Whoever it was didn’t need to look far for the inspiration though. The comedy radio show Round The Horne was a a highly popular in the late 1960s. Barry Took and Marty Feldman created the character of Rambling Syd Rumpo for Kenneth Williams and each week he would sing a stream of delightfully nonsensical innuendo, usually to an authentic English folk melody; for example, The Highland Lament - a song of the Highland Turv-croppers, from April 1967:

The sexual imagery of ‘rump’ and ‘pump’ leaves little to the imagination and, whilst Rambling Syd Rumpo didn’t explicitly list rumpypumpy as one of his pastimes, it isn’t difficult to imagine that it would have been. railing against bureaucracy If you deplore the state of Thailands’ railways you can now rest assured that some long overdue safety issues with Hua Hins’ rail crossings are to be addressed. And while you wait for that to happen, here is a brief comparison with the operation of the UKs’ Network Rail, the company responsible for looking after our tracks. Over here there are always plenty of moans about the assorted failures of our rail system, especially in the north of England, where travellers feel increasingly left out of plans for high speed rail links, and where heavy rain can close a crucial line for several weeks on end. But as a close neighbour of the main line out of Hull I was amazed to learn that Network Rail has a department for Vegetation Management Works. You really couldn’t make it up. It is routine for us track side dwellers to receive notices from Network Rail warning of any upcoming night time track work, and I have commented before on the high level of track maintenance here compared to that of Thailands’, but the notice of Vegetation Management Works during mid April was a new one on me. And it gets even better. After the usual grovelling explanation of the whys, wherefores, and noisy equipment involved, there follows a reassuring paragraph on how the resulting piles of chopped down vegetation will be dealt with. This includes the use, where appropriate, of logs and branches to create a safe track side habitat for wildlife. There will even be an ecological survey carried out before work begins, and a 24 hour helpline. It goes without saying that Thailands record for rail safety isn’t good, and that there are huge problems with its’ hundreds, if not thousands, of barrierless crossings. No doubt some of those problems could be eased simply by removing any trees and bushes which obscure clear views of the tracks. But if - and when - that does happen, let’s hope that Thailand just gets on with the job without the same level of bureaucracy and political correctness

This week we take a look at two Hull folk who made names for themselves. First is Judo champion Karen Briggs, born in the city on 11th April 1963. Karen represented Great Britain at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, the first time that women’s judo was included as an Olympic sport. Unfortunately she sustained an injury which ruined her chances of a medal there, but made up for it by being four times World Champion, six times European Champion, five times Paris Multi-Nations Champion, and twice winner of titles at the Commonwealth Games. Our second person wasn’t born a Hull-ite, and wasn’t quite so athletic. But we still count playwright and author Alan Plater as one of our own.
Born on 15th April 1935, Plater came to live in Hull when his family moved here in 1938. His many works for stage and screen included ‘Z Cars’ (some of the cast seen above), the spin off ‘Softly Softly Task Force’ and the adaptation of ‘The Barchester Chronicles’ and he was best known for portraying ordinary folk in ordinary down to earth settings. Much like his adopted home town! Plater died in 2010, but I doubt there is a reader from the UK that won’t have seen some of his work at some point in their life. Word of the week is ‘ashram’. You might feel like finding one of these this weekend to escape the chaos - because an ashram is a Hindu retreat. Failing that option have a safe and enjoyable Songkran.

Sunday 12th April 2015 PREMIER LEAGUE Man Utd v Man City 22:00 The Manchester derby sees two sides in vastly different form, and city need a result here to keep their slim chances of defending the title alive. Both will be hoping that Chelsea slip up in the West London derby, but a draw will be no good for either in this game, so we expect a thumping match with both teams going hell for leather. And we can’t look beyond the home side to get the win, as LVG has got them playing like a proper team again, and has even to some extent sorted out their defensive frailty, largely helped by the superb De Gea. City are falling apart but are still a good side, and the occasion may well mean they raise their game, but they won’t be able to raise it enough.

PFA claims success in sexual consent course

The Professional Footballers Association is claiming success after 60% of its members earned a passing grade C or above on their new Sexual Consent Course. The first exams were taken by players at Brighton Hove Albion FC, and the PFA has hailed the fact that more than half of the footballers who attended are now qualified in gaining appropriate levels of consent from prospective sexual partners. A spokesperson for the PFA told reporters, “For too long the image of footballers as overly wealthy rape-hungry animals has been commonplace in society, but this course will go a long way to changing that perception.” “Already the results are clear, over 60% know when not to rape someone, and with exam retakes over the summer we expect that figure to be over 80% – which is frankly brilliant considering where we started.”

“I hope that one day everyone in society will be able to interact with a footballer without the slightest concern that they might get raped.” “Of course, some people are focussing on the 40% who failed this first course, but no-one talks about the 10% who actually got grade As. I guarantee they won’t rape anyone, ever.” Pedagogical experts have criticised the course’s syllabus, insisting that simply presenting a number of scenarios with ‘have sex’ and ‘do not have sex’ as a multiple choice answer does little to expand the students understanding. As one explained, “It won’t take long, even for a footballer with limited intellect, to realise that answering ‘do not have sex’ in every situation will get them a passing mark.” “But then again, maybe I’m giving them too much credit?”
