deadly Victor’s sea three die as songkran swim turns fatal

hua hin, THAILAND Three Thai Songkran revellers drowned at the Suan Son Pradiphat Beach south of Hua Hin on Monday afternoon, to add to the death toll on the roads that is common to the New Year celebrations. It is not clear exactly what happened but the police have suggested that one of them may have got into difficulties, possibly with cramp, and that the other two were trying to help but were then taken by the often strong rip tide currents found along this stretch of coast; three students died in March last year at a beach between Hua Hin and Cha Am in similar circumstances. The three victims in Monday’s incident were later identified as Krissada Iamkijjakarn, 38, Chonlamart Thirachaisunan, 23 and Natthapat Wuthaphanit, 23. Rescuers and troops used boats and jetskis to search for them after they were seen disappearing in the sea. A woman and a man were later found underwater. Rescuers gave them resuscitation before the man was rushed to the Bangkok Hua Hin Hospital and the woman to Hua Hin Hospital where they were pronounced dead. The body of the other man was spotted on the beach about two kilometers south of Suanson Pradipat Beach at 5:20 pm. Rescuers sent the body to Hua Hin Hospital for postmortem checking. Following the incident, and another non-fatal one involving two tourists at Had Sai Noi beach, red flags, indicating a no swim zone, have been placed at most of the beaches in the area. Whether this will be followed by employing lifeguards, and a campaign to get the public to learn how to swim or at the very least know the dangers of the sea before going too deep remains to be seen. Once again we extend our condolences to the families and friends of those who died.

SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Famous last words A remark or prediction that is likely to be proved wrong by events. Before “famous last words” became used as a rejoinder to point out the possible recklessness of an assertions of safety or certainty, it was used to refer to the actual dying words of prominent people. It was probably brought into the realm of sarcasm by such well-known last words as “They couldn’t hit an elephant from this distance” - an actual statement made by U.S. Civil War General John Sedgwick, immediately prior to his being shot dead by a sniper. It was initially used in a figurative sense to suggest in jest that something that had been said might cause offence and result in the speaker being put in a dangerous position; for example: A. “I think I’ll ask Mike Tyson if he’s always had that lisp”. B. “Famous last words!”. The first instances of this form were printed in a series of

“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing but nobody else does.”

Wink with AWOL 081 649 8361

newspaper cartoons in the 1920s/30s. An early example is from The Milwaukee Sentinel July, 1928: “I don’t want much to eat - just a little cold guinea hen and some imported caviar under glass.” The phrase was later extended to refer to more general potentially lethal situations, not necessarily involving the speaker, as in this piece from Shell Aviation News, 1948: Leopoldville is easy to find because you cannot miss the Congo River. (Famous last words!) It is now used widely and in reference to situations where the outcome might be bad, but in a minor rather than lethal way; for example: A. “We won’t miss the train. Mike’s never late”. B. “Famous last words!”. A more recent version of the comical but rather tragic actual last words to rival General Sedgwick’s are the final words of Terry Kath, a founding member of the rock band Chicago, He said, “Don’t worry, it’s not loaded.” just before accidentally shooting himself in the head with a 9mm. pistol. black magic An old man and woman were married for years even though they hated each other. When they had a confrontation, screams and yelling could be heard deep into the night. A constant statement was heard by the neighbours who feared the man the most. “When I die I will dig my way up and out of the grave to come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!” They believed he practiced black magic and was responsible for missing cats and dogs, and strange sounds at all hours. He was feared and enjoyed the respect it garnished. He died abruptly under strange circumstances and the funeral had a closed casket. After the burial, the wife went straight to the local bar and began to party as if there was no tomorrow. The gaiety of her actions were becoming extreme while her neighbours approached in a group to ask these questions: Are you not afraid? Concerned? Worried? that this man who practiced black magic and stated when he died he would dig his way up and out of the grave to come back and haunt you for the rest of your life?

weird NEWS usa Man accidentally shoots mother-in-law after bullet bounces off armadillo A man accidentally shot his mother-in-law after the bullet bounced off an armadillo, say police. Larry McElroy, 54, fired his 9mm pistol at the animal in Lee County, Georgia, US. It killed the armadillo – but the bullet ricocheted off its armour, hit a fence, went through the back door of Carol Johnson’s caravan and struck her in the back. According to a police report, McElroy was about 100 yards away from the home at the time. The 74-year-old was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a good recovery. usa Schoolboy charged with cybercrimes after changing teacher’s computer wallpaper A classroom prank seriously backfired for one schoolboy when he was arrested for changing his teacher’s computer background. Domanik Green, 14, a pupil at Paul Smith Middle School in Florida, was charged with an offense against a computer system and unauthorised access, after he changed the background to an image of two men kissing. He managed to gain access after using a teacher’s administrative password to log onto the computer, but said it had been relatively easy to get in because the password was just the teacher’s last name. ‘I logged into a teacher’s computer who I didn’t like and tried putting inappropriate pictures onto his computer’, he said. But before changing the background, Green also managed to gain access to a computer that contained the questions for Florida state exams, although district officials have said he did not view the files. Although the punishment seems slightly harsh, Sheriff Chris Nocco said that the case should act as a warning to other students. ‘If information comes back to us and we get evidence, they’re going to face the same consequences’, he said. Green was released from Land O’Lakes Detention Centre on Wednesday, and also received a 10-day-school suspension. It’s currently unclear whether he’ll return to the same school after the suspension is over.

usa Cannabis treats for pets are a real thing now It’s happened. Someone’s actually made cannabis treats for animals. ‘Pot for pets’ has been rolled out by firms which believe there’s a gap in the market, report Quartz. It sounds like a novelty product, but there is hope that the marijuana can be used as a mild pain relief for dogs struggling with illness or other complications normal brought on by old age. One dog owner told Quartz she was due to put her pet down, but bought it specially engineered weed in a last ditch attempt to help get it better. And it worked. She said: ‘Never in my wildest dreams would I have anticipated this. It brought my dog back.’ But Julianna Carella, CEO of Treatibles, one of the companies selling these products, said she was reluctant to discuss the medical benefits of animals eating products with hemp. The CEO explained: ‘Honestly, we’re hands off with that because we’re not doctors and it’s not our place to prescribe it in that way.’ usa Pokemon to blame for homosexuality, claims church A church has allegedly blamed Pokemon for encouraging homosexuality. Teenagers from the late 80s and early 90s have had their sexuality warped by Ash and his fruity friends, claims a study by the Creflo Dollar Ministry. According to Christ News, clues start with the relationship between the main character, Ash, and his friend Brock. It claims that many of the Pokemon’s shapes are of a phallic nature. NB To put the study into context, it comes from the same church from which a pastor launched a crowd-funding campaign so he could buy a new private jet – because God told him it was the right thing to do.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

ticking technology So - will you be queueing up to buy the new Apple iwatch? Despite price tags of up to 950 UK pounds, or 1100 dollars US (much more for the gold version - best not to ask!) it is bound to be a must have item when it goes on sale in the UK on April 24th. In fact the name Apple alone almost guarantees that anything bearing its’ logo flies off the shelves in record time. And to be fair you can pay much more for a watch that will only tell the time. As you will no doubt know by now the iwatch does far more than boring old time telling. Emails, texts, phone calls, heart rate monitoring, gaming - the list goes on. You can even dictate your replies to it. In fact I am almost talking myself into needing one as well. After all, the trusty old laptop can’t last forever. It will soon be time to look at the myriad other options available. But while I can see the attraction of the Apple iwatch (other makes of smartwatch are available), there is one major factor which people of a certain age like me have to seriously consider.... could I see the damn thing well enough to use it? Sadly the answer is no. And the other sad fact is that most women of a certain age were taught many moons ago to touch type. It was considered to be an essential skill in the world of work, which would serve us well forever and a day. Now of course the ability to use all 10 digits to find our way blindfold around a qwerty keyboard is not only defunct, but causes undue wear and tear. There are hollows and grooves in my vowel keys from repeated tapping with finger nails. The space bar is well worn and shiny on the right hand side, and God help the shift keys. Back when we used ‘sit up and beg’ Imperial 66 typewriters, (made in Hull by the way) you could get replacement caps to go over the keys. Now you just need a special little stylus thing to hit the right characters. Or failing that a pair of thumbs. But if you think about it smartwatches are a serious leap forward in technology which have potentially huge

benefits. Not least for people who are visually or hearing impaired. Just pop on a watch which tells you which way to turn and when to cross a road and the days of the guide dog will be over. Or buy an app that turns the spoken word into a sensory morse code for people who can’t hear. Then there is the health monitoring aspect. No more trying to phone at 8 on the dot in the morning for an appointment with your doctor, because the doctor will be the first to know that you need one. You will simply receive a message with an appointment time - ‘come in number 6 - your blood pressure is too high’. All of this is well within the realms of possibility. We just need to perfect voice recognition, which if certain UK TV channels are anything to go by is sadly lagging behind. Like many elderly folk my mother uses the subtitle menu while watching TV. Which for programmes like Emmerdale is fine - you can’t really misinterpret what is going on in the Woolpack. But when it comes to following news broadcasts it is an unmitigated disaster. By the time the text has faltered over some unfamiliar sounding word, gone back and corrected itself, then floundered over the next sentence, the news has moved on from Iraq to Royal babies, with the result that important chunks of text often miss the screen altogether. At least it is re-assuring to know that her frequently confused interpretation of world events is due to TV subtitles rather than dementia. The only hurdle remaining is to convince her that the mobile phone will actually work out of doors. This weeks word is one of 8 likely looking options gathered from just the first 60 pages of Terry Wogans’ autobiography - at which point I gave up on the book because there are too many obscure words in it with even more obscure meanings. ‘Encomium’ is the least obscure I found - meaning a speech or piece of writing which praises someone or something highly. In other words a tribute, testimonial or similar. It is probably one of many words which we could well manage without these days, and if you decide to read Sir Terrys book my advice would be to have a Latin dictionary handy!

Featured Game

Saturday 18th April 2015 PREMIER LEAGUE Chelsea v Man Utd 23:30 Apologies to the FA Cup semi-finalists, and blame the fixture schedulers for changing the traditional FA Cup weekends from being exclusive, but this game will have far more neutrals engaged, as it is likely to be a full blooded affair and less predictable than the FA Cup games.Chelsea laboured to a narrow win over QPR last week, while United were electrifying in their derby game. Chelsea under Mourinho have an unbelievable home record though and they won’t give it up easily. There are some signs though that the squad are getting jaded, and Drogba is not the player he was. We predict that the away side will continue their good form and win here to narrow the gap to five points, but still can’t see Chelsea missing out on the title.

mancs a bunch United fans take custody of Manchester’s pathetic self-satisfaction

uK LORRIES have been shifting Manchester’s reserves of insufferable smugness following last weekend’s derby game. The stockpiles of inexplicable conceit, kept in City-supporting homes since last May, were transported overnight to United households, many of which are in Manchester. Wayne Hayes, a researcher at Manchester University, said: “The city is fuelled by the belief that the whole world is against you and that you are the best thing to exist in that world. “When one group of foreigners outperforms another group of foreigners, the city’s absurd self-regard has to be placed in the custody of the self-deluding victors.” But with a disappointing season for both teams and the existence of Noel Gallagher’s

High Flying Birds, there have been predictions the city could lose a fraction of its overbearing self-belief. Hayes added: “By 2019 Manchester could be reduced to thinking it was marginally less important than a combination of New York and Atlantis.” Meanwhile there have been rumours that some of the stockpiles have been raided by Chelsea under the cover of darkness, and that as a consequence United fans are not feeling quite so full of themselves as they normally would after beating City, and that London in general is targeting the Mancunian myopia for itself.
