deadly Victor’s sea three die as songkran swim turns fatal

hua hin, THAILAND Three Thai Songkran revellers drowned at the Suan Son Pradiphat Beach south of Hua Hin on Monday afternoon, to add to the death toll on the roads that is common to the New Year celebrations. It is not clear exactly what happened but the police have suggested that one of them may have got into difficulties, possibly with cramp, and that the other two were trying to help but were then taken by the often strong rip tide currents found along this stretch of coast; three students died in March last year at a beach between Hua Hin and Cha Am in similar circumstances. The three victims in Monday’s incident were later identified as Krissada Iamkijjakarn, 38, Chonlamart Thirachaisunan, 23 and Natthapat Wuthaphanit, 23. Rescuers and troops used boats and jetskis to search for them after they were seen disappearing in the sea. A woman and a man were later found underwater. Rescuers gave them resuscitation before the man was rushed to the Bangkok Hua Hin Hospital and the woman to Hua Hin Hospital where they were pronounced dead. The body of the other man was spotted on the beach about two kilometers south of Suanson Pradipat Beach at 5:20 pm. Rescuers sent the body to Hua Hin Hospital for postmortem checking. Following the incident, and another non-fatal one involving two tourists at Had Sai Noi beach, red flags, indicating a no swim zone, have been placed at most of the beaches in the area. Whether this will be followed by employing lifeguards, and a campaign to get the public to learn how to swim or at the very least know the dangers of the sea before going too deep remains to be seen. Once again we extend our condolences to the families and friends of those who died.
