new flights between hua hin and pattaya start next week

hua hin, THAILAND Travelling between Hua Hin and Pattaya has never been the easiest journey, and apart from the brief appearance of a small privately run ferry operation a couple of years ago, the trip has had to be endured by road, taking anything between four and eight hours depending on traffic.

A few weeks ago the government announced plans to launch another ferry service, and last week the Chiang Mai based airline Kan Air announced flights that will begin a week today (29th May) between the two tourist resorts.

The flight schedule sees planes leaving Hua Hin on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 8.40pm, arriving at U-Tapao airport thirty minues later at 9.10pm, and on the same days in the opposite direction, departing at 7.40pm and arriving at 8.10pm. Flight prices have been confirmed now, after an initial mistake, to be a promotional 990 baht in each direction, with a one way full fare of 1690 baht. The planes to be used are the 66 seater ATR72-500, and the fare allows 15kg of baggage. There will also be free shuttle buses at each destination taking passengers to and from the airports.

Kan Air also operates flights to Chiang Mai from Hua Hin, and currently with the same promotional price and baggage allowance. Details and bookings for all their flights and fares can be found on the Kan Air website, www.kanairlines.com.

While some might worry that this new service will attract some of the less savoury characters from Pattaya to Hua Hin, overall we believe that this will be a very useful and used service by both sides of the Gulf, and can only help both cities boost thier tourism.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is..... Hobby-horse A favourite topic that one frequently refers to or dwells on; a fixation.

The first things that were referred to as hobbies were in fact horses, of a breed that was popular in Ireland in the Middle Ages and is now extinct. The Scottish poet John Barbour referred to them as hobynis, in the narrative poem The Bruce, 1375. In Reliquiae Antiquae, a poetic work of Barbour’s from around 1400 and republished in 1841, he referred to them again, this time with a little more context:

A wooden horse fixed on a ‘merry-go-round’: Gray’s Letters and Poems, 1741 - “A Fair here is not a place where one eats gingerbread or rides upon hobby-horses.”

A velocipede, on which the rider proceeded by pushing the ground with each foot alternately; also called a ‘Dandy-horse’: The Gentleman’s Magazine, February 1819 - “A machine denominated the Pedestrian Hobby-horse... has been introduced into this country by a tradesman in Long Acre.”

It is the ‘favourite pastime’ version of the name, what we now call simply ‘a hobby’, that was adopted as a figurative expression meaning ‘a fixation; a thing one keeps coming back to’, that is, similar to having a bee in one’s bonnet.

So, a hobby is really a hobby-horse. If by any chance you occupy your spare time studying 13th century Irish livestock, your hobby-horse might just be a Hobby horse.

English mummers, morris dance teams and minstrel groups began performing with characters (often children) dressed in wickerwork and cloth costumes, made to look like stylised horses - not altogether unlike the present-day pantomime horses. These ‘hobby-horses’, which took their name from the Irish breed, are still to be seen as part of the English folk tradition, notably at the annual ‘Obby ‘Oss festival, celebrated each May Day in Padstow, Cornwall. This custom dates back to at least the 16th century, when a payment for a performance by a hobby-horse was recorded in the Churchwarden’s Accounts of St. Mary’s Church, Reading, 1557:

As time went by, the name hobby-horse was given to numerous other things; for example, A loose woman or strumpet: William Shakespeare, Loves Labour’s Lost, 1588 - “Cal’st thou my love Hobbi-horse?”

A child’s nursery toy: George Puttenham, The Arte of English Poesie, 1589 “King Agesilaus, hauing a great sort of little children... tooke a little hobby horse of wood and bestrid it to keepe them in play.”

A dance, similar to the stage antics of the mummers’ horses: Richard Lassels, The Voyage of Italy, circa 1668 - “Women like those that danced anciently the Hobby-horse in Country Mummings.”

A favourite pursuit or pastime - later shortened of course just to hobby: Sir Matthew Hale, Contemplations Moral and Divine, 1676 - “Almost every person hath some hobby horse or other wherein he prides himself.”

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

singing for your supper Please try not to get too excited, but May is Eurovision Song Contest month.

Unbelievably now in its’ 60th year, the contest was started in 1956 with just seven countries taking part.

This year the number of countries entering the contest is 40, far exceeding our 1950’s notion of Europe. In fact it’s surprising that Thailand doesn’t have an entry. They would love it. Any excuse for a party. And a surprising number of Brits at home do partake of Eurovision parties, while the rest of us try to find a pub with no TV. Clearly I’m not a huge fan of the whole tedious ‘nil point’ evening, but there is a long forgotten link between Hull and Eurovision, in the shape of Patricia Bredin.

Now aged 80 and living in Canada, Pat was an actress and singer who hailed from Hull, and who in 1957 became the UKs’ very first Eurovision entry with a song entitled ‘All’. That second year in Frankfurt the number of entries had risen to 10, and Pat finished 7th.

I’m sure the poor lass did her best, but to this day UK entries still don’t have a good success rate. Even Sir Cliff only managed to come second in 1968 with ‘Congratulations’, (yes I know, it seems like only yesterday.) Although of course the voting had nothing at all to do with a certain Cup Final goal two years before.

To her credit Pat delivered her typically 50’s style song perfectly, in a beautifully clear, almost operatic voice which you can - if you must - catch on YouTube. But as is so often the way a much more upbeat ballad finished first, that time courtesy of our Dutch neighbours.

While on the subject of music, singers and contests, I may as well get another Hull born singer out of the way.

This one you might even have heard of - David Whitfield - a tenor who is best remembered for his hit song ‘Cara Mia’, which topped the UK charts for 10 weeks in 1954, and became the UKs’ first million selling record.

Born in 1925, as a child David sang in his church choir, as well as in local pubs for a few bob.* Later he entertained his colleagues while serving in the Royal Navy.

In 1949 he won Britains first talent show - Opportunity Knocks - and became a regularly featured artist on Radio Luxembourg (which hosted Opportunity Knocks at that time.)

David Whitfields’ strong tenor voice served him well during his career, and he also became the first British solo singer to a achieve a Top Ten hit in Americas Billboard Hot 100 chart, well before the Beatles invaded American shores.

He died while on tour in Australia in 1980, but with a lethargy typical of Hulls’ City Elders, it wasn’t until 2012 that a statue was erected in his memory.

It would perhaps be churlish to let this weeks’ THAB pass without a brief nod to the UKs’ latest Royal, Princess Charlotte , who arrived just in time to divert some attention from the General Election - not that much diversion was needed.

It must be a relief to the Duchess of Cambridge to know that she has fulfilled her Royal duty and produced not only ‘an heir and a spare’, but also a healthy sister for young Prince George. Well done Kate - you can now chillax! * For the benefit of our younger readers, word of the week is ‘bob’. Normally used to describe a brief curtsy, or a hairstyle, in this context ‘bob’ was the slang word for the UKs’ pre decimal shilling coin. At 20 shillings to the old pound, a shilling is now equivalent to 5 new pence (or about 2.5 baht at current exchange rates).

Monday night quiz league

I am gauging interest from pubs, school teachers, anyone who interested in forming a quiz team and indeed individuals who may wish to join a team, in starting a Monday night quiz league. I am looking for between six to ten teams and ideally teams will have between 4 and 6 members although this will be a recommendation rather than a rule.

The idea will be to hold quiz nights on a Monday with venues selected from the pubs and bars who enter. For those who form teams but are not associated with a particular venue, then this is not a problem.

The quiz will probably be based on 8 rounds of a variety of subjects, and a points and standings system agreed to determine an outright winner at the end of the season.

The questions although in English will be internationally based so feel free to enter from ANY country.

We already have a sponsor who will provide prizes and a number of bars/clubs have expressed an interest.

Hull do need a win though either way. Newcastle are the joker in the pack, with what on paper seems to be an easy game against a West Ham team who seem determined to undo all the good work they did earlier in the season.

A quite possible scenario though is that all three teams finish on 37 points, which would see Newcastle relegated because of their terrible goal difference. It’s squeaky bum time again folks!

Steven Gerrard played his last Liverpool match at Anfield last Saturday, in a final example to young footballers that you too can miss out on league titles if you stay with the same club forever.

Gerrard is shortly to head into the sunset to finish his career in Los Angeles, just ten years after rejecting the opportunity to win league titles with Chelsea.
