infrastructure problems rear up again

hua hin, THAILAND Most of our readers will probably have encountered issues with either their water supply, electricity supply or internet in recent weeks, with many choosing to just wait until it is fixed rather than attempting to report any issues, as mostly these things are fixed within a couple of hours. However some parts of town have been without a water supply for over two weeks, and many parts have had major power cuts and internet outages for significant periods of time, as well as very slow connectivity when it is working. It becomes clear that the town can still not cope with the number of people demanding these services when these issues are experienced in low season, although somewhat exacerbated by the weather, given that when it rains it appears to cause the elctricity to go off, or cause a ‘brown out’. This in turn has an impact on the ability of the phone companies to provide internet and phone services, although there may be a case to argue that those companies have oversold their bandwidth capacity as well. You may find yourself being told that you need to ‘upgrade your package’ if you complain but the suspicion is that this is an easy get out that won’t solve the underlying problem. Promises have been made in the past about investing in the town’s infrastructure, and while there has been some evidence of this, it is still not able to cope, and is a major problem that holds Hua Hin back from becoming a truly world class destination, an aspiration that has frequently been spoken about. We must make it clear to the suppliers of the services that their promises need to be delivered, and soon. You can find the relevant phone numbers for them on page 14.

china Sci-fi obsessed tycoon builds replica of Star Trek ship as company HQ A sci-fi obsessed multi-millionaire hopes to boldly go where no man has gone before, after building his office headquarters to look like the Starship Enterprise from Star Trek. Businessman Liu Dejian, the chairman of China’s most popular mobile internet provider, was granted a license to build the impressive replica in Fujian Province. Unsurprisingly, the impressive recreation doesn’t come cheap, costing an estimated £100 million to construct, and features 30 foot metal slides between levels, and automatic sliding gates. But he’s certainly able to afford it, with his family boasting a £390 million fortune – larger than the Queen. Construction on the offices began in 2008, and the building finished in 2014, becoming the new headquarters of NetDragon Websoft, Dejian’s company. It’s believed that his Star Trek obsession began when he studied chemistry at the University of Kansas. Since then, he’s managed to sell his own smart phone company for a whopping £1.2 billion, which is probably

why he’s been able to build this place. Captain Kirk would be extremely proud. uk Driver left in tight spot after prankster wraps car in cling film This is hilarious for everyone except for the owner of this car found with cling film around it. An unlucky motorist in Kent returned to their Toyota to discover it in the unfortunate state. If that wasn’t enough, pranksters had also left photos of breasts and a half naked man touching his nipples under the wrapping. The tightly packaged car was spotted outside East Borough Primary School in Maidstone. ‘I spotted the car at break just after I finished my maths exam,’ said 15-year-old schoolgirl Cheryl Russ. ‘At first I thought it was a rain cover but then when I got closer I realised someone had wrapped it in clingfilm. ‘I got my mum to drive past it later and it had gone.’

Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 The stars would love to tell you what’s ahead for you this week, but they’ve decided t0 wait and see the look on your face when it all happens. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 Nothing will be able to prepare you for the sense of dread and fear you’ll experience when you suddenly realize your life has meaning and purpose again. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20 To improve your spiritual health, avoid the myriad temptations of the flesh. This is most easily accomplished by repeating the word “flesh” over and over until it creeps you out.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 Most accidents occur at home, so stay safe this week by living on the streets of a distant city. Gemini May 22 – June 21 You’ve always been afraid no one will notice when you die, but take comfort: The swarm of killer bees will be very much aware of what’s happening. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 There is little that can truly mend a broken heart besides time. Sadly, you only have about three weeks to learn to love and be loved again. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 You’ll learn a lot about yourself this week, but despite that, you’ll still struggle to figure out exactly what you’re supposed to eat.

To avoid sudden murder, try not to read any predictions about your future this week. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 The circumstances of your life will combine so as to grant you possession of a great many lemons. However, the advice you receive regarding their purpose will be useless and trite. SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... At one fell swoop Suddenly; in a single action. This is one of those phrases that we may have picked up early in our learning of the language and probably worked out its meaning from the context in which we heard it, without any clear understanding of what each word meant. Most native English speakers could say what it means but, if we look at it out of context, it doesn’t appear to make a great deal of sense. That lack of understanding of the words in the phrase is undoubtedly the reason that this is often misspelled, for example, ‘at one fail swoop’, or even, with more justification as it might be thought to relate to birds, ‘one fowl swoop’. It isn’t difficult to also find examples of ‘one foul swoop’. ‘Stoop’ is sometimes substituted for ‘swoop’ in all of the above variants, again drawing on avian imagery. So, what’s that ‘fell’? We use the word in a variety of ways: to chop, as in fell a tree; a moorland or mountain, like those in the northern UK; the past tense of fall, as in ‘he fell over’. None of those seems to make sense in this phrase and indeed the ‘fell’ here is none of those. It’s an

old word, in use by the 13th century, that’s now fallen out of use other than in this phrase, and is the common root of the term ‘felon’. The Oxford English Dictionary defines ‘fell’ as meaning ‘fierce, savage; cruel, ruthless; dreadful, terrible’, which is pretty unambiguous. Shakespeare either coined the phrase, or gave it circulation, in Macbeth, 1605: MACDUFF: [on hearing that his family and servants have all been killed] All my pretty ones? Did you say all? O hell-kite! All? What, all my pretty chickens and their dam At one fell swoop? The kite referred to is a hunting bird, like the Red Kite, which was common in England in Tudor times and is now making a welcome return after near extinction in the 20th century. The swoop (or stoop as is sometimes now said) is the rapid descent made by the bird when capturing prey. Shakespeare used the imagery of a hunting bird’s ‘fell swoop’ to indicate the ruthless and deadly attack by Macbeth’s agents. In the intervening years we have rather lost the original meaning and use it now to convey suddenness rather than savagery. The bus driver, caught up in the beautiful scenery, loses control and crashes into the ditch. A farmer living nearby hears the horrible crash and rushes out to discover the wreckage. Finding the politicians he buries them. The next day, the police come to the farm to question the man. “So you buried all the politicians?” asked the police officer. “Were they all dead?” The farmer answered, “Some said they weren’t, but you know how politicians lie.” church On his way out of church, Frank stopped at the door to speak to the minister. “Would it be right,” he asked, “for a person to profit from the mistakes of another?” “Absolutely not!” replied the pastor. “In that case,” said the young man, “I wonder if you’d consider returning the hundred dollars I paid you to marry my wife and me last July.”

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

a conundrum of migrants It is common knowledge that some of Thailands’ leaders consult soothsayers on matters of national importance. I wonder whether those same soothsayers foresaw the present migrant crisis affecting South East Asia. Because I surely can’t be the only one who hadn’t even heard of the Rohingya people until last month. Along with many others I had hoped that, following the final release of Aung San Suu Kyi from detention in 2010, Burma would begin to get its’ act together. Now it seems that the country wants nothing to do with the Rohingya, who make up about 10% of it’s population, and that the present situation has been on the back burner since at least 2012, fired by Burmas powerful anti Muslim monks. So who are these people who are such a thorn in the side of Burman Buddhists? Although the Rohingya claim to be indigenous to Burma, some historians believe that they first migrated there from Bengal during the period of British rule in India, with more recent and smaller influxes following Burmese independence in 1948, and during the Bangladesh liberation war of 1971. Given that some of this is relatively recent history, you would think that someone somewhere would have a better idea of what actually happened. Especially as we Brits in our wisdom instilled a Civil Service style order in India. Or perhaps that is just a myth, and we actually spent most of our time there taking tiffin and playing Polo. Whatever the history, thousands of Rohingya people clearly feel the need to pay traffickers and embark on dangerous, ill-fated voyages headed for countries which obviously don’t want them, certainly not on a permanent basis anyway, as is the case with Malaysia and Indonesia. Curiously many thousands of them have moved to Bangladesh, where they stay in either UN, or illegally run camps, and of course are not allowed to work. In fact the UN estimates that there could be as many as 300,000

Rohingyan people in Bangladesh, while at the same time Bangladeshis are also fleeing their own country in their thousands as economic migrants. Meanwhile Thailand has been refusing to take the Rohingya at all. No surprise there. We already know how the Land of Smiles deals with illegal immigrants from Burma, not to mention the embarassing problem they have with mass graves of allegedly trafficked people in the South, which is almost as embarassing as all that low grade rice which found its’ way over assorted borders. But one thing Thailand can do well is host a meeting, which is exactly what it is doing. As this AWOL hits the sois on May 29th a special meeting of ASEAN countries takes place in Bangkok to discuss irregular migration in the Indian Ocean. (Perhaps a better title for it would be ‘regular’ migration, as the whole thing looks like a crazy and dangerous ongoing merry-go-round.) Burma will not be attending the meeting - no surprise there either. And of course Thailand isn’t even a full member of ASEAN. Still, it’s a good opportunity for the TAT to attract some positive publicity, which they are very keen on at the moment, as well as providing delegates with a much needed night on the tiles in the Big Mango. It might even serve as a passing nod to the UN. Let’s face it - isn’t this why we love the place? And besides, we Brits really have no right at all to be critical of Thailands’ immigration policy. Our once respected Civil Service can’t even keep track of our own immigrant numbers, legal or otherwise. Only last month concerns were raised about the treatment of women detainees in some of our Immigration Detention Centres. And while we have little or no say in the free movement of Europeans, our track record of offering asylum to Syrian refugees is nothing to be proud of. The UN refugee agency has asked rich countries to help resettle 130,000 Syrians. The UK has taken in 143. Perhaps that’s a sign that our economy isn’t picking up quite as quickly as we are led to believe. Word of the week is ‘aesthete’. A person who is described as an aesthete is unusually highly sensitive to beauty - as in art or nature - and may claim to be concerned only with art and beauty. A description which could fit those tourists with just one eye on the paintings for sale in the Night Market?

Monday night quiz league

I am gauging interest from pubs, school teachers, anyone who interested in forming a quiz team and indeed individuals who may wish to join a team, in starting a Monday night quiz league. I am looking for between six to ten teams and ideally teams will have between 4 and 6 members although this will be a recommendation rather than a rule. The idea will be to hold quiz nights on a Monday with venues selected from the pubs and bars who enter. For those who form teams but are not associated with a particular venue, then this is not a problem. The quiz will probably be based on 8 rounds of a variety of subjects, and a points and standings system agreed to determine an outright winner at the end of the season. The questions although in English will be internationally based so feel free to enter from ANY country. We already have a sponsor who will provide prizes and a number of bars/clubs have expressed an interest. Should you wish to enter a team or join a team looking for players, please e-mail me as follows: ANDY GALBRAITH e-mail address: andygalbraith@yahoo.co.uk I am looking for entries before the end of this May. Many thanks.

(all times Thailand) Saturday 30th May 2015 THE FA CUP - FINAL Arsenal v Aston Villa 23:30 THE SCOTTISH CUP - FINAL Falkirk v Inverness CT 21:00 Featured Game

Saturday 30th May 2015 THE FA CUP - FINAL Arsenal v Aston Villa 23:30 This could be an absolute classic cup final, as both teams have pace and neither have the best defences, although the Gunners have become much less porous since having Ospina between the sticks. For Villa this is their chance to end an otherwise difficult season on a high note, and few would begrudge Tim Sherwood a victory here after the turnaround he has engineered in the club’s fortunes. Most neutrals will be supporting his Villa side we think, not least because of the way he was treated by Arsenal’s bitter rivals Spurs. Both teams have matchwinners, although Arsenal are blessed with a greater number and it will be a fascinating game. We believe that Per Mertesacker is a weak point in the Gunner’s defence and will be the one that Villa’s quick forwards will try to isolate, while the Villa defence will need to be at their sharpest, as Arsenal have threats in all attacking areas. We foresee a game with plenty of goals and we think that the Villa players may just want this a bit more than Arsenal, so are going for the underdogs to triumph by the odd goal.

the sack race Brendan Rodgers sacks Liverpool FC

uK

LIVERPOOL FC manager Brendan Rodgers has announced that he is sacking the club after yet another disappointing season. The manager made his decision after the team’s abysmal 6 - 1 defeat to Stoke City which condemns them to yet another season of European football on ITV4. Rodgers had warned the club that if they dropped points against Stoke they would face grave consequences. In an official statement, he said: “I would like to place on record my thanks for all the hard work put in by Liverpool FC during their tenure under me. “However, it has become clear that as they do not have the calibre required of a Brendan Rodgers club and it is with deep regret that I must let them go. I wish them all the best for the future.”

Left: Brendan Rodgers after announcing the sacking of Liverpool FC There were tearful scenes as the club cleared its desk, looked around Anfield for the last time and strode out into the car park to an uncertain future. It is thought that they might try their luck in the American MLS league as the Liverpool Lassoes. Meanwhile, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City are among the frontrunners to take their place under Brendan Rodgers, although there has been a strong surge of bets placed on West Ham and Real Madrid, following their sackings by Sam Allardyce and Carlo Ancellotti. Rodgers said: “Clubs come and go. But there always has been Brendan Rodgers and there always will be. He always walks alone.”
