couple arrested after targeting and burgling foreigners homes

hua hin, THAILAND Hua Hin police arrested a Thai couple last weekend and discovered an Aladdin’s cave of stolen items that have been put on display at Hua Hin police station. Most of the items were stolen from foreigners apparently, and included iPhones and iPads, laptop PCs, cameras, purses, gold necklaces, wristwatches and passports. A number of pawn shop tickets were also found at the scene. Police apprehended Thawalchai Thawilsuk, 37, and Surintra Khumsup, 31, at their rented house in Hua Hin and followed investigations into more than 30 complaints registered at the Hua Hin police station by local residents and foreigners. Pol Col Chaikorn Sriladeecho, the Hua Hin police superintendent, said that under questioning the couple admitted to driving around housing estates and other locations looking for likely targets, and then waiting for the occupants of the houses to go out before breaking in. Over 100 items were recovered from their house, but many more had already been disposed of, mainly at pawn shops locally. Many foreigners have visited the police station to identify thier property, and anyone who has reported a burglary in the last few months is encouraged to go along to see if their possessions are in the haul recovered. Police believe that all the offences were committed in the last six months, and the couple have been charged with burglary. Unfortunately no detailed crime figures are available for the Hua Hin area, but the police should be congratulated for solving this case, and should encourage foreigners to report any break ins or burglaries that occur.

usa Two men have actually been arrested for ‘manspreading’ When hopping on the train, there’s few things more irritating than someone who’s invading your own space because they’ve decided that it’s totally acceptable to stretch out their own legs. It’s an unacceptable practice called ‘manspreading’, and two men from Brooklyn, NY have been arrested for it – after police decided that they were taking up too much space. The bizarre arrest was revealed after the Police Reform Organizing Project scoured court testimonies to produce a PDF that aimed to examine the NYPD’s attitudes to race and class. But a document which detailed the bizarre crime was also found, and described how two men were arrested for the bizarre offence. The document read: ‘On a recent visit to the arraignment part in Brooklyn’s criminal court, PROP volunteers observed that police officers had arrested two Latino men on the charge of “man spreading” on the subway, presumably because they were taking up more than one seat and therefore inconveniencing other riders. ‘Before issuing an [adjournment contemplating dismissal] for both men, the judge expressed her skepticism about the charge because of the time of the arrests: “12:11AM, I can’t believe there were many people on the subway’.

Both men received an ACD – which means that the charges will be dropped if they avoid arrest for a determined period of time. The New York Metropolitan Transport Authority prohibits taking up more than one seat if it happens to interfere with the functioning of the train or ‘comfort of other passengers’. germany Police called over ‘armed mob’ (who turned out to be asparagus pickers) Police descended on an ‘armed mob’ they thought were terrorising the countryside recently, only to find they were a group of harmless asparagus pickers. Locals in Ludwigslust, a rural area in northeaster Germany reported seeing a group of men armed with knives and sticks prowling the fields nearby. Within minutes six police cars arrived, preparing for a violent scene, however they discovered the ‘mob’ were a group of workers heading up the road to take their lunch break. Police quickly realised the mistake and allowed the group, which contained ’10 to 16 people’, to continue on their way. White asparagus is a popular delicacy in Germany and a ubiquitous sight on restaurant menus in late spring.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Been there, done that To have experienced the topic under discussion, to the point of boredom or complacency. This phrase began life in the early 1970s, in the short form ‘been there’, which had the same meaning as ‘been there, done that’. An early example comes from the American author Edwin Torres’ novel Carlito’s Way, 1975: “Money is only an object. I’ll get it. Got it, been there.” The most commonly used form ‘been there, done that’ is generally regarded as an American expression. This item from the New York newspaper the Syracuse HeraldAmerican, February 1982, which is the earliest version in print that I can find, puts that in some doubt. It’s in a piece by Jerry Buck, writing out of Los Angeles, about actress Lauren Tewes: “Miss Tewes, who has just got divorced, says she doesn’t plan to get married at this time. Using an Australian expression, she says, ‘Been there, done that.’

“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing but nobody else does.”

Wink with AWOL 081 649 8361

Despite that citation which places the origin in Australia, the first known use of it there dates from 1983. It appears in newspapers there in that year and is also cited in the Australian lexicographer Susan Butler’s The Macquarie Dictionary of New Words, 1983, which implies that it was current in the language for at least a year or two prior to that publication. About a decade later ‘got the t-shirt’ was added for extra emphasis. An early citation is from Ski Survival, February. 1991: “Knee Injuries. Rosemary Burns has been there, done that and got the T-shirt. She gives fellow sufferers her sympathy and sound advice.” Of course, it wasn’t long before you really could get the T-shirt. Such T-shirts have become a favourite of alumni associations worldwide. And, having begun adding to the original ‘been there’, there’s no real limit to how far people will go with this phrase. A recent (August 2007) posting in the alt.music. pink-floyd Usenet Newsgroup claimed to have “Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, worn a hole in it and now use it as a duster.” Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? impressive A young lawyer, starting up his private practice, was very anxious to impress potential clients. When he saw the first visitor to his office come through the door, he immediately picked up his phone and spoke into it,” I am sorry, but my workload is so tremendous that I am not going to be able to look into your problem for at least a month. I shall have to get back to you then.” He then turned to the man who had just walked in, and said, “Now, what can I do for you?” “Nothing,” replied the man. “I am here to hook up your phone.” bubba Emily Sue passed away and Bubba called 911. The 911 operator told Bubba that she would send someone out right away. “Where do you live?” asked the operator. Bubba replied, “At the end of Eucalyptus Drive.” The operator asked, “Can you spell that for me?” There was a long pause and finally Bubba said, “How ‘bout if I drag her over to Oak Street and you pick her up there?”

breakdown An attractive woman from New York was driving through a remote part of Texas when her car broke down. An Indian on horseback came along and offered her a ride to a nearby town. She climbed up behind him on the horse and they rode off. The ride was uneventful except that every few minutes the Indian would let out a whoop so loud that it would echo from the surrounding hills. When they arrived in town, he let her off at the local service station, yelled one final, “Yahoo!” and rode off. “What did you do to get that Indian so excited?” asked the service station attendant. “Nothing,” shrugged the woman, “I merely sat behind him on the horse, put my arms around his waist, and held onto his saddle horn so I wouldn’t fall off.” “Lady,” the attendant said, “Indians ride bareback...”

trains, buses and thrones So. Here we are again then - almost half way through another year. Which seems as good a time as any to review THABs predictions for 2015 to see how we are doing. New British royal baby - tick. General election in the UK - tick. Hull City FC relegated - again - tick. Old Moore eat your heart out! I just wish now that I’d included a prediction that the UK would fail to get ‘deux points’ in Eurovision. That would have been another foregone conclusion.

Much less easy to predict is how Bangkoks’ first electric powered bus will fare. Its’ pilot route began last month, operating between the Lat Krabang airport link and the Ladkrang campus of the King Mongut Institute of Technology. The bus (it isn’t clear yet whether there is more than one) can travel for up to 250 km on a single 4 to 5 hour charge, reaching a top speed of 70 kmph. If the top speed alone isn’t frustrating enough for the drivers, the need to recharge the things certainly will be. Google refuses to reveal the distance of the pilot route, but it can’t be very far. All things being equal, including the scale and accuracy of Bangkok maps, it could be around 4 or 5 km. I wouldn’t put money on that, but hopefully it is safe to assume that these trial runs will proceed without incidents of the flat battery kind. Of course if it does prove to be successful the city will no doubt want to extend its’ electric bus service. Which is where things could get interesting. Lets look at a possible future route between the Institute of Technology and the centre of Bangkok for example, a distance of 30 km. After every 4 return trips a bus would need to be fully recharged, and it is too much to hope that that could be done at any handy 7Eleven.

On the plus side the bus(es) are GPS enabled, so that passengers can track where they are when they grind to a halt, and phone a friend for a lift. I probably shouldn’t doubt Bangkoks’ ability to deliver though. They have done an amazing job with Skytrain, which has been running and expanding now for almost 16 years. And although I still hate the thing for destroying what used to pass for tranquility on Silom Road, it is a great way to get around Bangkok. As is the subway of course. Opened in 2004 the Bangkok subway (or MRT) was linked to GPS, just 6 years after the first ever mass produced GPS enabled mobile phone was introduced. But on the MRT you could simply use the DTAC mobile network to tell you which subway station you were arriving at. (Other networks were available.) And very handy it was too, with 2 layers of tinted glass between passengers and platform signs, checking your phone to find out which station you were arriving at could be the only way to be sure of getting off at the right stop. And talking about subway stations, next time you happen to be in Bangkok and have a hour or so to spare, the pedestrian subway from HuaLamphong railway station to the HuaLamphong subway station is worth a look - and cool. It is a surprisingly wide and spacious tunnel lined with photos, displays and information on the building of the MRT, and houses the two special thrones made for Their Royal Majesties when they officiated at the opening ceremony. NB no - you can’t sit on them! Word of the week is ‘pusillanimous’. One of those inexplicably long words for which there are much shorter and more memorable options. In this case weak, timid, lacking courage, or faint hearted.

Monday night quiz league

I am gauging interest from pubs, school teachers, anyone who interested in forming a quiz team and indeed individuals who may wish to join a team, in starting a Monday night quiz league. I am looking for between six to ten teams and ideally teams will have between 4 and 6 members although this will be a recommendation rather than a rule. The idea will be to hold quiz nights on a Monday with venues selected from the pubs and bars who enter. For those who form teams but are not associated with a particular venue, then this is not a problem. The quiz will probably be based on 8 rounds of a variety of subjects, and a points and standings system agreed to determine an outright winner at the end of the season. The questions although in English will be internationally based so feel free to enter from ANY country. We already have a sponsor who will provide prizes and a number of bars/clubs have expressed an interest. Should you wish to enter a team or join a team looking for players, please e-mail me as follows: ANDY GALBRAITH e-mail address: andygalbraith@yahoo.co.uk I am looking for entries before the end of this May. Many thanks.

(all times Thailand) Sunday 7th June 2015 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - FINAL Juventus v Barcelona 01:45 Featured Game

Sunday 7th June 2015 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - FINAL Juventus v Barcelona 01:45 This season’s Italian and Spanish Champions face off in what could be a classic match. It will however take a supreme effort by Juve to overcome the stellar line up they face, and any team with Messi, Neymar and Suarez in it will be hard to contain; the Italians do have great experience in their side, but this also comes at the expense of the speed and mobility of their older players, with the likes of Buffon, Chiellini, Evra and Pirlo close to the ends of their playing careers. They do of course have Carlos Tevez in their ranks who is equally capable of turning a game, but to have any chance at all they must simply stop Barcelona playing and hope to take any chances that come their way. We can’t see that happening however, and think this will be a very one sided contest and a treble of League, Cup and Champions League for Barcelona.

red handed Professional football sickened by FIFA’s culture of greed

uK

THE world of professional football has expressed its outrage at the ‘sickening’ greed of FIFA officials. Players and managers said football was about perfecting a beautiful game and to pursue money so crudely was extremely distasteful. Wayne Rooney, who is paid £50 per match plus his bus fare at Manchester United, said: “I train every day and then go home to my little terraced house, meanwhile these FIFA guys are buying huge mansions. “They’re driving around in Bentleys while me and my wife Coleen look through the Littlewoods catalogue at all the things we would like to buy one day. Sometimes life is a struggle, but overall we’re very happy.” Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo added: “Playing football is a great way to unwind

Above: Despite claiming that ‘my hands are clean’, FIFA President Sepp Blatter has now announced he is stepping down after only being reelected last week

after spending all week working on my uncle’s fishing boat. FIFA has lost touch with the simple life of the ordinary man. “Of course it would be nice to be paid a bit more by Real Madrid, but I’m not complaining because I make enough money from gutting sardines. I now have a small flat and a moped.” Chelsea manager and part-time coffee shop barista, Jose Mourinho, said: “I met one of these FIFA guys once. He was really flaunting his wealth to the point where I did start to get a bit jealous. “But then I went back to my room at the Holiday Inn Express, opened a packet of complimentary shortbread and realised I was the luckiest man in the world.”
