british woman given clean bill of health hua hin, THAILAND A British woman who had been quarantined in a Hua Hin hospital for over a week because she had sat near a man who contracted MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome) was released on Tuesday (30th June) having been given a completely clean bill of health. Kerry Sue Newman, 30, had sat two rows behind the man on a connecting flight from Oman to Bangkok, and had arrived in Hua Hin where she was staying at the Por Promin Muay Thai Camp, when officials from the Health Department contacted her and took her into quarantine under guidelines laid down by the World Health Organisation. MERS is potentially fatal and the current outbreak in South East Asia has killed a total of 27 people, mainly focused in South Korea with 175 confirmed cases. The 75-year-old man from Oman who Miss Newman sat near had travelled to Bangkok to be treated for a heart condition, which is how it was discovered he had the illness. Human to human transmission is both rare and there is a very low risk of contagion but the Thai authorities should be commended for their swift action regardless. One of the owners at the Por Promin Muay Thai Camp in Samorphrong, Miriam, posted on ThaiVisa, “Kerry has now been released from her quarantine having been thoroughly tested for MERS, by throat swab, nasal swab and blood tests and has been fully cleared to be MERS free - so she didnt get it from the Oman guy.” She went on to praise both Kerry and the staff at the hospital for how they had handled everything., as well as correcting earlier reports that Kerry was going to be billed for her stay at the hospital. A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... In a nutshell In a few words; concisely stated. The meaning of the phrase ‘in a nutshell’ is fairly easy to deduce. Anything that could be written in so few words that it would fit into a nutshell would have to be brief and to the point. The first text that was supposed to be enclosed in a nutshell was far from small. Pliny the Elder recorded an event, which he apparently believed to be genuine, in Natural History, the original of which was written in AD 77 and was translated into English in 1601 by Philemon Holland, who included explanatory notes, like this: We find in Histories almost incredible examples of sharpness of the eyes. Cicero hath recorded, that the poem of Homer called the Iliad, written on parchment, was enclosed within a nutshell. The same writer maketh mention of one who could see to the distance of 135 Miles. Almost incredible? The Iliad is about 700 pages of A4 text and in Homer’s day would have been written on clay tablets. This story seems to be an early example of Chinese whispers, long before that term was invented.
Holland was translating a piece by the Roman author Pliny the Elder, who had been told by someone that Cicero had seen a minutely written version of a text by the Greek author Homer. Shakespeare, who often took themes from the classics, alluded to the ‘something compact’ idea of ‘nutshell’ when he gave Hamlet the line: I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself a king of infinite space, were it not that I have bad dreams. The figurative use of ‘in a nutshell’ to mean specifically ‘in few concise words’ didn’t emerge until the 19th century. Thackeray used it in print in The Second Funeral of Napoleon, 1841: Here, then, in a nutshell, you have the whole matter. Squeezing books as long as the Iliad into a nutshell was beyond the capability of an ancient Greek with a stylus, but modern nanotechnology has made it straightforward. Many versions exist that would fit inside a walnut shell, and some readable (with a microscope) texts can fit on a pinhead.

The cooking sessions are once a month. Each member has a chance to host the group in their home and make dinner for them. There are no guidelines as far as what to cook, as long as the meal is homemade and they provide the recipes. Costs are shared and each member brings their own drinks. My idea was to regularly gather people who have the same passion; cooking. As there are many nationalities it will be exciting to discover new food cultures and to share recipes. A cooking group is also a social event; cooking together is fun and is an opportunity to make new friends. You do not need to be a chef in order to join the group. Whatever your level of cooking is, most important is that you like cooking, are open to new ideas and are prepared to participate regularly at the members’ cooking sessions. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
doing the business! Are you all ready for the Big Toilet Cleaning Day on Saturday? In case it has passed you by 4th July has been chosen by Thailands’ great and good as the day on which the image of the nations loos will be changed for ever. Public squatties in stations and ferry terminals across the land will sparkle as never before. Sales of Toilet Duck will soar before the event. Tourists will praise Thailands Twinkling Toilets on postcards home. Hang on a minute though, why has it taken since early May, when the event was announced, to actually get down and dirty? Is this just a one off event, or will it take place annually? And if so, what about the other 364 days every year when the inevitable gunge takes hold again? Surely public toilets are cleaned every day? Just to be clear that I know what a clean public toilet should look like, Hull has won awards for them. We may be struggling to get a grip on our City of Culture status for 2017, but by god we know how to keep our toilets clean. We are even home to the English HQ of Ideal Standard - makers of all things bathroom. And I’ve seen some pretty dire toilet facilities elsewhere. Those at New Delhi airport spring immediately to mind, closely followed by one loo on a Boeing headed for Bangkok, which really should have been quarantined. By contrast I have never found Thailands toilets to be so bad. In fact very often pristine. Especially, and maybe surprisingly, those situated at pit stops on the main highways. True, many squatties do suffer from flooding, no doubt caused by over exhuberant use of the bailing pan. And those ridged bits which you put your feet on are always prone to gathering dirt. But on the plus side the sprays - when provided - more than compensate for any other toiletry failings. In fact those sprays should be mandatory on all toilets world wide. They would very quickly put Andrex out of business and save an awful lot of trees.
So I’m puzzled by this latest Thai initiative of a national toilet cleaning day. Just as I am puzzled by those beach cleaning days. None of it is going to attract international publicity, just as none of it will attract more tourists. It’s just another one of those misguided ideas which show that the TAT - bless it - still isn’t getting to grips with the underlying issues of how to really promote tourism. Please TAT, if you need more tourists, you need to advertise, and you need to make every day a clean one. As I write the UKs’ annual Glastonbury Festival has just drawn to a close, and as usual I have watched the headline acts on TV. For those of you who have missed it, this years’ Glastonbury has yet again proved that the old ones are the best, with veterans Lionel Ritchie and The Who drawing huge and diverse crowds to see them perform. Lionel Richie first entered the UK charts at number seven in 1981 with ‘Endless Love’, while The Who go back even further to 1965, with their number eight chart entry ‘I Can’t Explain.’ 50 years on the Who are still touring and pulling in the crowds, aided by a very astute decision to recruit Zak Starkey - son of Ringo Starr - as their drummer. 34 years on Lionel Richie can still persuade his audiences to dance on the ceiling. These are artists who our parents told us were rubbish and would never last. Just how wrong can you be. Word of the week is ‘inchoate’ - used to describe something which is just begun, and so not fully formed or developed. A bit like Thailands’ toilet cleaning policies maybe? Happy Thanksgiving to all.

As the England women reached the World Cup semi-finals after beating host nation Canada – a feat not achieved by their male counterparts for 25 years – English men must now defer to ladies on anything to do with football.
