trash heroes cleaning up the beaches.... but can foreigners help?

hua hin, THAILAND Regular readers will have probably noticed the full page advert on page 9 in recent weeks promoting a group of volunteers who have been cleaning up Khao Takiab beach every Thursday for several weeks now. The hope is that more volunteers will join in and that the effort can be expanded to more beaches and public spaces in the area.

Individually, of course, everybody can make sure they dispose of their own litter responsibly, but there does remain a question over whether foreigners can volunteer to assist Trash Hero, as theoretically at least, this would be breaking the rules on employment. We contacted the immigration office in Hua Hin to find out, and they told us that volunteer work where no payment is involved is allowed, as long as the foreigner can produce on request a valid passport and visa (or copy) and has not overstayed the permission to stay date. We have also been assured by one of the founders of Trash Hero Hua Hin, Pennapa Kradtarn, that it shouldn’t be an issue, as the original founders of the Trash Hero movement are Swiss.

You can find out more by visiting their website at www.trashhero.org, and the Hua Hin group has a Facebook page under Trash Hero Hua Hin. Pennapa’s objectives are to clean up the beaches and public areas as well as to reduce waste, especially plastic waste. They also hope to educate local residents as well as tourists to practice good waste management.

The organisation is a purely non-profit, voluntary group and requires no membership or monetary contributions. All they ask for is volunteers to show up on Thursday and start cleaning, or help provide garbage bags or refreshments for the volunteers. Currently, the clean-up events happen only on the Khao Takiab beach but they are hoping to expand to other parts of Hua Hin when they have more volunteers.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is..... Wax poetic Speak in an increasingly enthusiastic and poetic manner. ’Waxing poetic’ has nothing to do with bees, candles, or polishing cars. The verb ‘to wax’ is ‘to grow’; the opposite of ‘to wane’, which is ‘to decrease’. Grow and decrease have largely superseded the archaic terms wax and wane in almost all modern usages, apart from the waxing and waning of the moon. The other remaining contemporary uses of ‘wax’ with the meaning of ‘grow’, survive in various expressions like ‘wax poetic’ and ‘wax lyrical’. These are often explained as deriving from the imagery of the waxing of the moon. In fact, the word is extremely ancient and was used to mean grow in many contexts prior to it being used to describe the monthly increase in size of the visible moon. King Alfred, in the translation of Pope Gregory’s Pastoral Care, which he commissioned in AD 897, used the Old English version of the word - ‘weaxan’.

There are numerous examples of the use of ‘wax’, meaning ‘grow’, in mediaeval texts; for example, The Geneva Bible, 1560, in Deuteronomy 32:15: “But he that shulde haue bene vpright, when he waxed

fat, spurned with his hele.” [the 1611 version has it in more modern English as “Jesurun waxed fat, and kicked.”]

It isn’t until much later that ‘wax’ began to be used to refer to flowery and poetic speech or writing. This occurs in various phrases, like ‘wax lyrical’, ‘wax poetic’ and ‘wax eloquent’. Of these, it is ‘wax poetic’ that is still most commonly used. ‘Wax eloquent’ was the first of this group of phrases to be used to describe someone becoming increasingly expansive and expressive in speech. That dates from the early 19th century, for example, this piece from Bracebridge Hall, a collection of essays and literary sketches by Washington Irving, 1824: “The whole country is covered with manufacturing towns... a region of fire; reeking with coal-pits, and furnaces, and smelting-houses, vomiting forth flames and smoke.” The squire is apt to wax eloquent on such themes.

Ironically, far from ‘waxing eloquent’, Irving was suffering from writer’s block in 1824, following a family bereavement, and struggled to finish enough essays as

The cooking sessions are once a month. Each member has a chance to host the group in their home and make dinner for them. There are no guidelines as far as what to cook, as long as the meal is homemade and they provide the recipes. Costs are shared and each member brings their own drinks.

My idea was to regularly gather people who have the same passion; cooking. As there are many nationalities it will be exciting to discover new food cultures and to share recipes. A cooking group is also a social event; cooking together is fun and is an opportunity to make new friends.

You do not need to be a chef in order to join the group.

Whatever your level of cooking is, most important is that you like cooking, are open to new ideas and are prepared to participate regularly at the members’ cooking sessions.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

summer fun?

The end of June and beginning of July were not at all good for holiday makers. The shocking massacre of tourists on a Tunisian beach - the meltdown of the economy in Greece - but a travel agent in Hull managed to make one customer very happy indeed.

The customer had paid for a holiday in Tunisia for later this month. Too afraid to go there after what had happened on June 26th, she asked the travel agent if her destination could possibly be changed. The agent happily obliged, changing her holiday arrangements at no extra charge. The delighted woman phoned into our local radio station to sing her praises for the astute agent, who had very kindly agreed to send her to Greece instead.

And at last - summer arrived in Hull! For once people seemed to really welcome the hotter weather, which is quite strange for these parts. The usual responses to sudden increases in temperature such as ‘too ****** hot for me’ or ‘don’t know how you cope with this ****** heat’ were conspicuous by their absence. People were smiling - even talking to complete strangers more than they normally would.

Sure, there were the inevitable comments about lack of sleep due to the muggy weather, by which people mean that it is humid and sticky, but overall Hull has been an unusually content city.

Maybe part of the reason for this stems from those folk who have no foreign travel plans this year. Simply because nowhere abroad seems safe anymore, and even countries which are considered worth the physical risk of visiting could suddenly become financially unstable.

Or maybe they just can’t afford it.

Whatever the reasons retailers are always ready to cash in on better weather. Even those Brits amongst you who have been in Thailand for many years will remember those stacks of barbecues and garden furniture. The supermarket aisles full of barbecue-able foods and sun

creams. The displays of floaty summer clothes, and sandals with minimal straps which still manage to cut your feet to shreds. Those goods which you know will disappear as quickly as they arrived, only to be replaced by the end of season sales.

But this summer one well known UK supermarket chain has surpassed itself with a new line of seasonal clothing - for dogs. And the really sad thing is that the items could well prove to be very popular amongst working class Brits with designer dog aspirations.

Along with what is described as a ‘cute summer top’ there are hoodies, canine onesies, and a sweatshirt. No self respecting soi dog would be seen dead in any of it, and let’s be honest, no dog needs it. Yet the trade in all things dog related seems to continue to flourish both in the UK and in many other allegedly civilised countries.

I may be barking up the wrong tree - but surely any normal dog is quite happy running around in fields, rolling in mud, or leaping into the local duck pond without having to worry about getting its’ clothes wet. With that in mind, isn’t there something very strange about people who buy dogs small enough to fit into handbags so they can carry them around, then proceed to dress them up? Not to mention those who pay several hundred pounds for the kinds of cross breed we once called mongrels.

As we say here in Yorkshire - ‘there’s nowt so queer as folk.’

This weeks’ word is also a bit queer. ‘Palimpsest’ is a word with Greek origins, (which I’m afraid is as topical as it gets.) It refers to a parchment or other surface from which writing has been erased, so that the surface can be written on again. It can also mean something else which has been altered or used again, but which still bears visible traces of its’ earlier form. Buildings are a good example, and many a Hua Hin bar could be described as a palimpsest.

Gazza sends Laura Bassett set of plastic breasts

england Paul Gascoigne has told England’s Laura Bassett that she will feel much better once she wears a pair of fake plastic breasts on an open-topped bus.

The England defender scored an unfortunately last-minute own-goal that consigned the Lionesses to defeat in the nation’s first football semi-final since 1990.

Bassett’s tears at the final whistle were reminiscent of Gascoigne’s own at Italia 90.

Gascoigne sent the breasts recorded delivery after watching the match, before telling us, “Right now she’ll feel like the world is coming to an end, and it will feel like the tears won’t ever stop – but they will. Just as soon as she puts these plastic breasts on.”
