hua hin airport loses another route but this time it’s different

hua hin, THAILAND The recent announcement that Kan Air had been ordered to suspend more than half of its network due to licensing issues has caused some confusion for Hua Hin based travellers, as initial reports failed to mention the recently started flights between Hua Hin and U-Tapao (Pattaya) which we reported on in May (Issue 329), although the flights between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai which began in August last year are definitely not affected. We spoke to Kan Air to establish what the current situation is, and they confirmed that the service is not running now, but that it will resume once the licensing issues have been resolved. At the heart of the issue is that the operating licence issued for the suspended routes was for charter operations, whereas these were actually operating in a scheduled nature, with online and over the counter ticket sales for a fixed schedule. According to the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) to qualify for a charter flight permit, Kan Air would need to sell tickets on a wholesale basis and not through retail distribution channels. A number of airlines have launched and then cancelled routes out of Hua Hin Airport over the last few years, and while official announcements rarely give the reason, it has mostly been assumed that the services were not profitable; the list includes the original operators of the airport, Bangkok Air, who flew to Bangkok and Ko Samui, Nok Air (Bangkok), Thai Lion Air (Hat Yai), and the only international route that has been attempted with Berjaya Air’s flights to Subang Airport in Selangor, Malaysia. There have also been long running stories that Firefly will start services to and from Penang but firm plans have never materialised. Only time will tell, but for now flying to or from Hua Hin remains a rare pastime.
