hua hin, THAILAND Beginning today, Friday 28th August, and running until Sunday 30th August, the Hua Hin Food Festival 2015 is being held at Queen Sirikit Park (19 Rai), which is on the soi running parallel to the sea accessed from either Soi 19 or Soi 35 where the Immigration office is. It has been held every year since 2005, and organised this year in honour of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 88th Birthday Anniversary. The event will highlight a wide variety of local food and international delicacies cooked by professional chefs from participating hotels and restaurants in Hua Hin and Cha-am. Visitors will get the chance to taste a very special menu created for this event – the 88 pans of hot and spicy fried rice with fresh seafood. The professional skills of talented kitchen staff will be showcased throughout in a series of competitions, including ice carving, vegetable and fruit carving, and, of course, cooking. There will also be free evening mini concerts by leading Thai singers. Normally alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are also available to wash down the excellent food on offer. The Food Festival has been held at the end of August for the last three years now; prior to that it had normally taken place in either November or December, so it looks as though this is now a permanent change. We don’t know the reasons for the change, but it’s previous schedule probably saw it somewhat overshadowed, coming close to other major events such as His Majesty the King’s birthday (5th December), New Year’s Eve, Loy Kratong (this year on 25th November), and local events such as Hua Hin Bike Week (normally held early December) and the Hua Hin Vintage Car Parade (early/mid-December).

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Grass up Inform on someone to the police. In 2005, British newspapers picked up on a story about a burglar who had stolen cash, jewellery and an African Grey parrot from a house near Hungerford, Berkshire. David Carlile, widely described in the press as ‘featherbrained’, explained to the police that he knew that African Greys could talk and he didn’t want the bird to ‘grass him up’. Presumably, had the parrot been a Norwegian Blue, he would have left it to pine for the fiords. ‘Grassing up’ has been a commonly used expression in the UK since the mid 20th century, but is less common elsewhere. The first known use of ‘grass’ in that context is Arthur Gardner’s Tinker’s Kitchen, 1932, which defined a grass as “an informer”. Grass was a wellenough established word in the 1980s to have spawned ‘supergrass’, that is, a republican sympathiser who later ‘turned Queen’s evidence’ and informed on the IRA, and which gave the Brit-pop band Supergrass their name in the 1990s. Informers are variously known as squealers, noses,

moles, snouts and stool pigeons. These terms invoke imagery of covert snooping around and of talking. Grass is less intuitive. It could just have arisen from ‘snake in the grass’, which derives from the writings of Virgil (in Latin, as ‘latet anguis in herba’) and has been known in English, meaning traitor, since the late 17th century. There is another route to the word and this is via rhyming slang. Farmer and Henley’s 1893 Dictionary of Slang defines ‘grasshopper’ as ‘copper’, that is, policeman. The theory is that a ‘grass’ is someone who works for the police and so has become a surrogate ‘copper’. The rhyming slang link was certainly believed in 1950 by the lexicographer Paul Tempest, when he wrote Lag’s lexicon: a comprehensive dictionary and encyclopaedia of the English prison to-day: “Grasser. One who gives information. A ‘squealer’ or ‘squeaker’. The origin derives from rhyming slang: grasshopper - copper; a ‘grass’ or ‘grasser’ tells the ‘copper’ or policeman.” That comes only a few years after the term grass was coined and there seems little reason to doubt it as the derivation. The original users of the term ‘grass up’ were from the London underworld and would have certainly been better acquainted with rhyming slang than the works of Virgil. Some have also theorised that the term ‘shop’, meaning ‘give information that leads to an arrest’, derives from the same source, that is, that, as ‘grass’ derives from ‘grasshopper’, then so does ‘shopper’. The earliest known use of shop in that context dates from around the same time as the emergence of grasshopper. The issue of the magazine Tit-Bits for May, 1899 includes: “[He] volunteered for a fiver to ‘shop’ his pals.” As far as we know, African Greys don’t go shopping.

The cooking sessions are once a month. Each member has a chance to host the group in their home and make dinner for them. There are no guidelines as far as what to cook, as long as the meal is homemade and they provide the recipes. Costs are shared and each member brings their own drinks. My idea was to regularly gather people who have the same passion; cooking. As there are many nationalities it will be exciting to discover new food cultures and to share recipes. A cooking group is also a social event; cooking together is fun and is an opportunity to make new friends. You do not need to be a chef in order to join the group. Whatever your level of cooking is, most important is that you like cooking, are open to new ideas and are prepared to participate regularly at the members’ cooking sessions. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
ringing the changes The summer months are never very good for UK television programming, which is why I found myself searching through the DVD collection recently. Unsurprisingly most of them were bought in the Hua Hin Night Market, which for people of a certain age can be a particularly good place to find music DVD’s. Things like the Eagles ‘Hell Freezes Over’ reunion, and McCartneys’ ‘In Red Square’ concert. You get the drift. Visitors to Hua Hin, and a few expats, fearing the worst, often ask about the quality of market DVD’s, but from experience with my own modest collection I have to say I’ve never had a bad one. Movies can be a bit of a pain when they have subtitles, but concerts tend not to have them. I mean - have you ever met a Thai person who can’t sing along to Hotel California? So if in doubt try a few, you don’t have a lot to lose and could be pleasantly surprised. Now a question for all you farang ladies. How would you feel if your husband to be wanted you to wear the engagement ring which had belonged to his late mother? Flattered perhaps? Or a bit cheated out of a brand new ring of your own choosing? I can’t help thinking that Kate Middleton must have been in a bit of a quandary over the prospect of becoming betrothed with Princess Dianas’ ring, even though it is a rather big sapphire now worth an estimated 300,000 pounds, even without its’ Royal provenance. After all, it’s one thing to have a second hand (aka vintage or previously loved) sparkler when you don’t know who wore it before, quite another when the whole world recognises it every time you pop to the shops, and immediately associates it with such an iconic woman. As if Diana isn’t a hard enough act to follow! Little wonder then that palace insiders, and the media, are speculating about Kates’ present (and future) role as a British royal. Questions are flying around about her apparent lack of public appearances since the birth of her baby daughter three months ago. Is she tiring of the

spotlight? Is living up to the image of Diana taking it’s toll? Give the poor woman a break. The month of August is known for a lack of juicy news items, and hopefully the tabloids will soon return to their normal coverage. Meanwhile Kate is probably just worn out with breast feeding the baby and chasing after her 2 year old toddler. But you still have to wonder whether, deep down, she wishes Diana had done what any sensible divorced woman would do, and sold that damned ring! Or maybe our Royal Majesty should consider following the example of the Thai Royals and persuade her parliament to pass a law of lese-majeste. That would save us all a lot of grief. And finally, you can be forgiven for forgetting that, following Milibands demise in May, the Labour party is still without a leader. You are certainly not alone. But for anyone sad enough to have been in suspense for the last 3 months rest assured - it will all be over in a week. Unfortunately one of the four remaining contenders for the leadership tried to play the race and gender card, which in 2015 seems a rather desperate and outdated tactic. In mid August, with two men and two women in the running - all of them caucasian - Yvette Cooper declared that the party should no longer be run by two white men. However she failed to comment on the possibility that it could end up being run by two white women, and that Scotland is now run by a woman, and that there had been an early possible candidate who was an Asian man, but who had stepped down. May the best man - or woman - win. Word of the week is ‘fecund’. Used for example in the context of ‘a lush and fecund garden’, or ‘a fecund imagination’, it means very fertile, or producing many new and creative ideas.

FOOTBALLERS are being encouraged to open up about being offside. For years, footballers have staunchly refused to confess that they are offside even when caught in an irrefutably offside position. The Football Association has launched a campaign titled There’s No Bad Side that encourages players to discuss the taboo topic rather than resorting to excuses such as not interfering with play. Liverpool striker Christian Benteke said: “I’ve never been offside myself, but I’ve had friends who have and who may have scored important goals while visibly offside. “It’s something that only gets discussed in whispers in a dark corner of the dressing room.” Italian legend Filippo Inzaghi spent over a decade in an offside position prior to his retirement in 2012, but insisted that each
and every one of the 15,000 free-kicks he conceded for the offence was in error. The FA estimates that as many as one in three strikers are covertly occupying an offside position at any given time. Other notable players who have either been caught offside or are suspected to have been include Justin Fashanu, Graham Le Saux, Michael Owen, Thomas Hitzlsperger and the entire French National team since records began. A player who wished to remain anonymous said: “I like being offside. I do it for the rush, but I live in fear of being caught in an offside trap – I have no idea how I’d explain that to my friends and family.”
