We are acutely aware that almost everyone has been forced to be a little more careful with their money in recent months, and that there are many individuals, families and businesses that are struggling for a number of reasons, but particularly the drops experienced in tourism numbers, resulting in less customers and lower incomes. Advertising is, unfortunately, one of the first casualties of business belt tightening, and here at AWOL we have witnessed this first hand. Because of this, the temptation by many would be to raise prices to compensate for the lost trade, but we are doing the very opposite; over half of our price points have gone down and none have increased, in the hope that more of the businesses out there can at the very least consider placing an advert with us. You can find a few more details about our price reductions on page 9, but by the time this issue hits the streets our updated Media Guide will be available to anyone who wants it either by emailing us on sales@awolonline.net, calling or texting us on 081 649 8361, as well as available to download from our website, www.awolonline.net. We are also in the process of installing a system on our website allowing advertisers to book and pay for print display adverts online, enabling the use of debit and credit cards as well as bank transfers and cash. We believe that an advert in AWOL pays for itself many times over, and we hope that our lower prices will encourage you to give us a try. A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... The writing is on the wall Imminent danger has become apparent. ‘The writing is on the wall’ is also sometimes expressed as ‘the handwriting is on the wall’ or as ‘mene mene’. The first of those variations is an obvious synonym but what does ‘mene mene’ mean? This is a shortening of ‘mene mene tekel upharsin’, which is of Aramaic origin. If your Aramaic isn’t that strong you can get some guidance from the Bible, Daniel 5, in the story of Belshazzar’s feast. To cut a long Old Testament story short, Belshazzar was indulging in a drunken revelry and debasing sacred temple vessels by using them as wine goblets when a disembodied hand wrote ‘mene mene tekel upharsin’ on the palace wall. On the face of it, and using a literal translation, this appeared meaningless. The expression seemed to mean ‘two minas, a shekel and two parts’ or alternatively ‘numbered, weighed, divided’. None of this meant much to Belshazzar, who decided that he needed further interpretation and sent for the Jewish exile Daniel. It then became clear that the phrase was an elaborate wordplay, relying on the fact that each word can denote

a different coin, and the third word can be interpreted as ‘Persia’. Daniel’s interpretation, as recorded in the first easily understood English version of the Bible, the King James Version, 1611, was: And this the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. This the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. The point of the moral tale was that Belshazzar couldn’t see the warning that was apparent to others because he was engrossed with his sinning ways. The subtlety of the biblical wordplay is now somewhat lost on those of us who don’t speak ancient Aramaic. Perhaps a flavour of the style can be conveyed by comparing it to the lyrics of the popular World War II novelty song Mairzy Doats: Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy diveya A kiddley divey too, wooden shoe? Literally, that’s meaningless but a wartime Daniel could have translated it into its actual meaning: Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy, A kid’ll eat ivy too, wouldn’t you? ‘Writing on the wall’ began to be used figuratively, that is providing warnings where no actual writing or walls are involved, from the early 18th century; for example, Jonathan Swift’s Miscellaneous works, 1720: A baited Banker thus desponds, From his own Hand foresees his Fall; They have his Soul who have his Bonds; ‘Tis like the Writing on the Wall. 7

The cooking sessions are once a month. Each member has a chance to host the group in their home and make dinner for them. There are no guidelines as far as what to cook, as long as the meal is homemade and they provide the recipes. Costs are shared and each member brings their own drinks. My idea was to regularly gather people who have the same passion; cooking. As there are many nationalities it will be exciting to discover new food cultures and to share recipes. A cooking group is also a social event; cooking together is fun and is an opportunity to make new friends. You do not need to be a chef in order to join the group. Whatever your level of cooking is, most important is that you like cooking, are open to new ideas and are prepared to participate regularly at the members’ cooking sessions. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
local heroes On September 1st 1651 a very well known character set sail from Hull on what would become his legendary travels. The 18 year old was the son of an eminent Hull solicitor, but he had chosen adventure rather than to follow in his fathers’ footsteps. It proved to be an interesting choice, and although Robinson Crusoe was only a fictional character he was still a local lad who was going places, albeit to a desert island. By contrast Michael Hollingbery was a genuine local lad who really did go places, but, unlike Robinson Crusoe, you have probably never heard of him. In 1958 Michael inherited the Hull based company which his father had established in 1933. That company would become electrical retail giant Comet. Founded by Hollingbery senior as a tiny business carrying out repairs to radios, by 1939 the company had expanded to meet the demand for renting ‘wireless sets’ as they were known, and had a small fleet of vans serving 2,500 customers. Its growth continued after the war as television became more readily available, and in 1968 Comet opened the countries first radio and TV discount warehouse, and pioneered ‘out-of-town’ retailing. By the early 2000’s Alan Sugar - no stranger to electrical retailing - commented that Comet had ‘changed the face of retailing....signalling the demise of the small electrical shop on the street corner, which simply couldn’t compete.’ The company continued to be based in Hull, providing employment and training for thousands of local people, and in 2007 Michael was awarded an OBE for services to the community. He died two years later on September 3rd 2009, and unfortunately in 2012 Comet was declared bankrupt. Perhaps the company always needed a Hollingbery at the helm. More likely the rapid growth in competition from the likes of Argos and Amazon was too much for it, and like Alan Sugars ‘small shops on street corners’ Comet simply couldn’t compete.

Another local outfit which failed to compete in a spectacular way was Hull Kingston Rovers rugby league team. Supporters are still trying to come to terms with their teams’ 50 - nil defeat to Leeds Rhinos last week at the Wembley cup final, which for such a rugby focused city was nothing short of a disaster. One relative who was at the match said ‘it was 90 minutes of head in hands.’ Still, for those of us who don’t really understand the game there is always the more positive thought that there is another Hull rugby league team to fall back on in the shape of Hull FC. Except it doesn’t quite work that way, because like the city, the two teams are divided by the river Hull, with one set of supporters in the west, and the other in the east. At least the most loyal of Rovers supporters braved the bank holiday rain early this week to welcome their team back to its’ civic reception. Which is more than can be said for the owner of newly relegated again Hull City. (They are the ones who play with round balls by the way.) Following the FA’s refusal to allow him to change the name of the team to Hull City Tigers, the owner has spit out his dummy and announced that he won’t be attending any matches this season. It is fair to say that he isn’t being missed. Word of the week is ‘qursh’. A qursh is the unit of currency used in Saudi Arabia, which equates to one twentieth of a Rial.

liverpool Subbuteo are to sue the entire Liverpool back four for copyright infringement following their performance during their 3-0 home defeat to West Ham. The game, which turned table tops into something even more boring, was a 1970’s smash hit with boys yet to discover masturbation.
