pilot scheme to cut school hours

hua hin, THAILAND The Education Minister General Dapong Ratanasuwan announced at the end of August that a pilot scheme to reduce school hours would begin in November in an initial 3,500 primary and secondary schools across Thailand. Currently the prescribed hours total 1,200 hours per year, and this will be cut to 840 hours by ending the official school day at 2pm instead of the current 3.30pm. It has not yet been announced which schools are taking part, which is voluntary, but it is likely that at least one in the Hua Hin area will be, although it has not been made clear whether this will also apply to private schools. While the children in the pilot schools will be allowed to leave their schools early, the idea is that they will be offered a variety of extra curricular activities, such as arts, sports, music, or environment preservation work. There has been a mixed reaction to the plan, and it is clear that there will be both advantages and disadvantages; it should allow students to be less stressed and spend more time with their families, and will reduce traffic congestion, but the fear is that the time may not be best utilided and could end up with students wasting the time in computer game shops or getting up to no good. Teachers and those involved in schools have been the most critical, such as Sucheep Patthong, president of La-Un Wittayakarn School in Ranong province, who said ‘This policy is not going to solve educational problems. It’s not the right solution’. The move has come as an effort to catch up with other countries like India and Malaysia, who have reduced school hours in recent years, as well as match the hours found in most developed countries. If the extra time is used well, it could be a very good development, although it could also be very disruptive to working parents.

SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Heavy metal Hard rock music, usually electric guitar-based and always loud. ‘Heavy metal’ seems at first a strange label to apply to a form of music. However, a little investigation into the symbolism behind the name reveals it to be a rather obvious choice. ‘Heavy’ was coined in the beatnik era of the 1950s to mean serious or profound and the term ‘heavy music’ was then and later applied to music in that vein. It’s clear to see this meaning of heavy is derived from the usual meaning, that is, weighty or massive. Okay, that’s ‘heavy’ explained but why should a form of music be called metal? Well, most metals are heavy, especially the metals favoured by the bands who played that genre and used metals in their names, for example Led Zeppelin, Iron Butterfly, Iron Maiden and Metallica. Also, the term ‘heavy metals’ in the chemical sense includes mercury, lead and cadmium, which have just the right image of toxicity to suit the musical style. So, both ‘heavy’ and ‘metal’ are suitable candidate words for this genre. Add to that the fact that heavy metal had already been widely used as a military term for heavily fortified tanks/guns etc. and it starts to look like an ideal choice as a label. The first heavy metal bands, notably Black Sabbath/ Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin and Judas Priest, hailed from Birmingham, which was then (sadly no longer) a principal centre of metal goods manufacturing in the UK. With the decline of that manufacturing tradition, most of the ‘metal bashing’, as it was known, is now done by these bands rather than by men with big hammers. Birmingham was the first industrialised city in the world and this industry was centred around the factories and furnaces of the aptly named Black Country, described by the US Consul to the city in 1868 as “Black by day, red by night”. Many of the members of the above groups worked in factories by day (Ozzy Osbourne was, for example, a horn tester in a car factory) and played in hard rock bands by night. It’s hardly surprising that the music reflected the sights and sounds that the band members were surrounded by. Black Sabbath are generally accepted to be the first heavy metal band. They were originally called Earth after J. R. R Tolkien’s mythical Middle Earth. Tolkien was a local boy and is thought to have based the region of Mordor on the Black Country. All in all, it’s clear where the musical form heavy metal originated. Although Ozzy and friends were playing heavy metal in the late 1960’s/early 1970s, they didn’t use that expression to describe it - for that we need to cross to

the USA. The term ‘heavy metal’ first appears in print in William Burroughs’ 1962 novel The Soft Machine. His character Uranian Willy is described as “the Heavy Metal Kid”. Burroughs later re-used the term in his 1964 novel Nova Express: “With their diseases and orgasm drugs and their sexless parasite life forms - Heavy Metal People of Uranus wrapped in cool blue mist of vaporized bank notes - And the Insect People of Minraud with metal music.” The term ‘heavy metal’ was used in a musical context in the title of a 1967 album by the British avant-garde outfit Hapshash and the Coloured Coat - Featuring The Human Host And The Heavy Metal Kids. The title wasn’t applied to a particular musical style and appears to have been a reference to the ‘kids’ in Burroughs’ novel. It isn’t clear who first appropriated the term to refer to loud rock music, although several lay claim to it. The widely quoted description of Jimi Hendrix’s music as ‘like listening to heavy metal falling from the sky’, while being a fairly accurate assessment, isn’t the earliest use of the phrase. Some claim that the US rock music critic Lester Bangs, while working for Creem magazine, used the expression in 1968 to describe a performance of the band MC5 (Motor City Five), but I’ve been unable to find documentary evidence of that. Creem magazine themselves attribute the term to Mike Saunders, in an article about the ‘Kingdom Come’ album, by Sir Lord Baltimore, in the May 1971 edition of the magazine: “This album is a far cry from the currently prevalent Grand Funk sludge, because Sir Lord Baltimore seems to have down pat most all the best heavy metal tricks in the book.” This has the benefit of being a traceable citation, as copies of the edition are still extant. So, until other hard evidence is found, that has to be the current strongest claim. It would be surprising if the term had never been used in the musical context before 1971 though - after all Steppenwolf used it in the lyric of their 1968 song Born to be Wild: “I like smoke and lightning Heavy metal thunder Racin’ with the wind And the feelin’ that I’m under” The phrase may be American but the music was born in the ‘jewel of the English Midlands’ - the Black Country. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

stomping ground It’s official. Elephants are frightened of mice. Truth be known they’re probably not too keen on Bangkok streets either, but for now investigations by the Discovery Channel have only focused on the mice. To conduct the experiment some mice were let loose among wild elephants. The elephants reacted by stopping dead in their tracks when encountering a mouse, before changing direction to avoid it. Am I alone in thinking that this ‘discovery’ is a bit insulting to elephants? Has no one considered the possibility that elephants actually love mice, and simply turn away from them to avoid squashing their tiny chums?

Back in the real world Hua Hin has just received a glowing write up in a UK travel column, which for once highlights the fact that His Majesty King Bhumibol is the worlds longest reigning monarch. To quote the Daily Mail’s travel writer Rob Crossan, the reign of His Majesty ‘is of such extraordinary duration

as to even outdo our own Queen Elizabeth II.’ This came of course at an appropriate time, coinciding with September 9th, the date on which Queen Elizabeth became Britains longest reigning monarch. All the same it’s good to see an acknowledgement of His Majesty appear in the UK press, along with some high praise for Hua Hin itself which includes the lazily bobbing fishing boats, lively night market, cerulean sky (whatever that means) and a ‘markedly more local feel than Phuket’. Not one to believe everything I read in the Daily Mail, the writers description of his visit to Khao Takiab, and mention of the Hua Hin Hills Vineyard convinced me that not only had he had actually been there, but that he was also suitably impressed. Whether or not the expats amongst you will welcome this bit of good publicity for your town will depend on whether or not you run a business there, and whether or not you can escape the weekend traffic. But as the number of suspects involved in the tragic Erawan Shrine bombing continues to grow confusingly and with no end in sight, any such positive reports have to be good for Thailand. This weeks word goes a long way towards explaining how Thai people can lead a happy and laid back way of life, and why they are averse to displays of anger. ‘Hangry’ is a recent addition to the Oxford English Dictionary, and means the bad tempered or irritable state caused by hunger. So there you have it. The secret to a happy farang/Thai marriage is never complain about your Thai partners need to feed frequently. To read Rob Crossans’ HuaHin article in full go to www. travelmail.co.uk ‘Thailand’s royal retreat.’

Saturday 12th September 2015 BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE Crystal Palace v Man City 21:00 It won’t be often that Palace fans will be looking forward to a top of the table clash but they are there on merit, having played some good football, and City will know that this is going to be tough. Having said that, City have started the season in awesome fashion and are yet to concede a goal. We are going for a narrow away win here.

to wenger or not ‘Wenger’ becomes a verb

england TO go out shopping and return home empty handed is now described as to ‘Wenger’. The Oxford English Dictionary said ‘Wengering’ is a tendency found in stubborn, parsimonious middle aged men who cannot handle the concept of inflation. Examples of ‘Wengering’ include: “I went to Marks And Spencer under orders to buy some new socks. But they didn’t have any like the last ones I bought in 1976, so I Wengered, came home and asked my wife to darn my old pairs instead.” Or there is: “My toilet had sprung a leak but the plumber I called was charging £50 an hour. So I Wengered – I had my son try to fix it instead, as part of my youth policy. The toilet flooded the bathroom but the important thing is, I stuck to my philosophy.” Or alternatively: “I am a multi-millionaire whose children desperately need new bikes

Above: Arsene Wenger decided not to buy the matching jacket when he bought a suit in Marks and Spencer

for Christmas. But I went to Halfords only to Wenger when I saw the prices. “Imagine the faces of my children when they open their presents on Christmas day, to find their old bikes patched up with sellotape. I will explain to them that now they are mended they are the same as new bikes. “In any case, they will be more than adequate for the brief trip we are making to Europe this year.” Wengering has become commonplace in Hua Hin as well, with examples being ‘I was in one of the bars in Binthabaht and was delighted to only have to pay 39 baht a beer, but come 10pm I Wengered as the prices went up to over 100 baht. So I went to the 7-11 and bought a Leo triple pack and sat outside on my own in the rain instead.’
