pilot scheme to cut school hours

hua hin, THAILAND The Education Minister General Dapong Ratanasuwan announced at the end of August that a pilot scheme to reduce school hours would begin in November in an initial 3,500 primary and secondary schools across Thailand. Currently the prescribed hours total 1,200 hours per year, and this will be cut to 840 hours by ending the official school day at 2pm instead of the current 3.30pm. It has not yet been announced which schools are taking part, which is voluntary, but it is likely that at least one in the Hua Hin area will be, although it has not been made clear whether this will also apply to private schools. While the children in the pilot schools will be allowed to leave their schools early, the idea is that they will be offered a variety of extra curricular activities, such as arts, sports, music, or environment preservation work. There has been a mixed reaction to the plan, and it is clear that there will be both advantages and disadvantages; it should allow students to be less stressed and spend more time with their families, and will reduce traffic congestion, but the fear is that the time may not be best utilided and could end up with students wasting the time in computer game shops or getting up to no good. Teachers and those involved in schools have been the most critical, such as Sucheep Patthong, president of La-Un Wittayakarn School in Ranong province, who said ‘This policy is not going to solve educational problems. It’s not the right solution’. The move has come as an effort to catch up with other countries like India and Malaysia, who have reduced school hours in recent years, as well as match the hours found in most developed countries. If the extra time is used well, it could be a very good development, although it could also be very disruptive to working parents.
