what is the future of Hua Hin city FC?

hua hin, THAILAND Rumours have been circulating for several weeks now that big changes are on the way for the town’s professional football team, Hua Hin City FC. We must stress however that nothing has been officially confirmed, but the indications are that some form of alliance has been formed with the TOT Sports Club team, which presently plays in the top level of Thai football, the Thai Premier League, although currently bottom of the league and battling hard against relegation. Some of the rumours are backed by facts, in that the coach of Hua Hin City is now also the coach of TOT, and several of Hua Hin’s leading players have been appearing for TOT in some kind of loan agreement, and this has upset many of the local team’s followers, as this has coincided with a marked loss of team form that has ended their hopes of reaching the ‘Champions League’ playoffs for a second consecutive season. The most controversial rumour by far though, is that there is going to be a merger of the two teams at the end of the season, with the Hua Hin name being attached to the team in the higher division, and relocating to our town. Clearly, if this rumour turns out to be true, this would help explain the efforts being made to support the TOT team at the expense of the Hua Hin team, but at the potential cost of supporter backing from either set of fans, who are the lifeblood of any professional sports team. In many ways we hope that the rumours are just that, and the two respective teams succeed or fail on their own, but football worldwide is a murky business where money has become the goal for both players and clubs alike, so it will be little surprise if they turn out to be true.

SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Baker’s dozen Thirteen or, more rarely, fourteen. This phrase came up in a conversation with a local Hua Hin businessman last week, who offered up an explanation that it was to do with the exact amounts of ingredients required to bake bread which would always create thirteen loaves. However, researching this further has revealed a number of plausible explanations. One is that it was simply a product of the way bakers bake bread. Baking trays tend to have a 3:2 aspect ratio. The most efficient two-dimensional arrangement then of loaves/biscuits/whatever on such a tray results in 13 items with a 4+5+4 hexagonal arrangement, which avoids corners. It was important to avoid the corners because they heat up and cool off faster than the rest of the tray, which would result in not cooking anything on the corner evenly with the rest. Another theory is that the practice of thirteen for the price of twelve was largely and effectively a wholesale discount for businesses that were going to ‘sell on’ the produce, although there is little historical evidence to back this up. It’s most widely believed though that this phrase originated from the practice of medieval English bakers giving an extra loaf when selling a dozen in order to avoid being penalized for selling short weight. This is an attractive story and, unlike many that inhabit the folk memory, it appears to be substantially true. We can say a little more to flesh out that derivation. Firstly, the practice appears to have originated several centuries before the phrase. England has a long history of regulation of trade; bakers were regulated by a trade guild called The Worshipful Company of Bakers, which dates back to at least the reign of Henry II (1154-89). The law that caused bakers to be so wary was the Assize of Bread and Ale. In 1266, Henry III revived an ancient statute that regulated the price of bread according to the price of wheat. Bakers or brewers who gave short

measure could be fined, pilloried or flogged, as in 1477 when the Chronicle of London reported that a baker called John Mund[e]w was ‘schryved [forced to admit his guilt] upon the pyllory’ for selling bread that was underweight. Secondly, it’s not quite so neat an explanation that whenever bakers sold twelve loaves they then added another identical loaf to make thirteen. They would have had just as much concern when selling eleven loaves, but there’s no baker’s eleven. Remember that the Assize regulated weight not number. What the bakers were doing whenever they sold bread in any quantity was adding something extra to make sure the total weight wasn’t short. The addition was called the ‘in-bread’ or ‘vantage loaf’. When selling in quantity to middlemen or wholesalers they would add an extra loaf or two. When selling single loaves to individuals they would offer a small extra piece of bread. The Worshipful Company still exists and reports that this carried on within living memory and that a small ‘in-bread’ was often given with each loaf. So, that’s the practice, what about the phrase? That goes back to at least 1599, as in this odd quotation from John Cooke’s Tu Quoque: “Mine’s a baker’s dozen: Master Bubble, tell your money.” The phrase is related to the practice described in John Goodwin’s A Being Filled with the Spirit, referring back to a quotation from 1665: “As that which we call the in-bread is given into the dozen, there is nothing properly paid or given for it, but only for the dozen.” By 1864 Hotten’s Slang Dictionary gives this explicit definition for ‘baker’s dozen’: “This consists of thirteen or fourteen; the surplus number, called the inbread, being thrown in for fear of incurring the penalty for short weight.”

hans Hans, a middle-aged German tourist on his first visit to Orlando, Florida, finds the red light district and enters a large brothel. The madam asks him to be seated and sends over a young lady to entertain him. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit, and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear and she gasps and runs away! Seeing this, the madam sends over a more experienced lady to entertain the gentleman. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit, and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear, and she too screams, “No!” and walks quickly away. The madam is surprised that this ordinary looking man has asked for something so outrageous that her two girls will have nothing to do with him. She decides that only her most experienced lady, Lola, will do. Lola has never said no, and it’s not likely anything would surprise her. So the madam sends her over to Hans. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit, and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear and she screams, “NO WAY, BUDDY!” and smacks him as hard as she can and leaves. Madam is by now absolutely intrigued, having seen

So she goes over to Hans and says that she’s the best in the house and is available. She sits and talks with him. They frolic, giggle, drink and then she sits in his lap. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

fishy business Hands up - it seems that my scepticism about Thailands’ new battle of the plastic bag might have been unfounded. (See AWOL for August 21st.) On its’ first day of operation, September 15th, plastic bag usage is claimed to have reduced by 1.8 million. (There are of course other sceptics around, with one wag commenting that bag use increased by 1.8 million the following day.) But let’s look on the bright side for a change. It’s a start, and the government now plans to hold ‘no bag’ days on the 15th and 30th of every month until the end of the year. With a population in excess of 67 million there’s still a long way to go. But it seems that even the UK is still struggling to implement a workable scheme. Its’ law on charges for plastic bags, due to begin on October 5th, is fraught with government red tape and confusing regulations on the thickness of plastic used, and what items qualify for a free bag. Add to that the fact that last year our UK supermarkets dished out 8.5 billion of them (who counts these things?) to our population of about 65 million, and maybe Thailand is heading in a better direction than we are. Well done if you missed last weeks word - but ‘on this day in history’ stories are a bit more interesting to write about, so no apologies there. On September 25th 1992 NASAs Mars Observer Probe mission blasted off at a cost of 980 million dollars. It reached Mars in August 1993 and hasn’t been heard from since. The humble fish finger has fared better. Celebrating it’s 60th birthday on September 26th the fish finger was developed in 1955 at the Birds Eye factory in Great Yarmouth. Before that Clarence Birdseye had experimented with using herring in a fish finger shape, trying to cash in on a post war glut of herring, but when market tested against those made with cod, the cod won hands down. Not however in Hull, where Birds Eye also produced fish fingers for many years. Although the presence of Birds Eye in the city is now limited to a much smaller frozen pea processing plant, once upon a time it provided jobs for hundreds of (mainly) women in the area of the then thriving fish docks. The fish finger was to Hull what Dole pineapples are to HuaHin. Many of those women who worked on fish finger production are of course still around, and still recall life at Birds Eye back in the 60’s, when health and safety wasn’t quite what it is now. They have fond memories of the cameraderie of the factory. Not such fond memories of going home at the end of their shift smelling of fish, and even less fond memories of dealing with cod.

Before the introduction of the fish finger, many of those women had worked as ‘patty slappers’ in other fish factories where part of their job was to fillet and pull worms out of the cod before it was processed, an experience which continues to influence Hulls’ fish eating habits today. A ‘patty slapper’ by the way was responsible for making that Hull delicacy - the patty. A moulded mixture of mashed potato and fish, with a bit of seasoning, which is battered and deep fried, and still consumed in great quantities. But back to the fish finger. Moving from patty slapping to producing fish fingers was a kind of promotion, but not only do those who worked with fish fingers never eat them but they, and the rest of the population of Hull, still much prefer their haddock, because it doesn’t contain worms.

Saturday 26th September 2015 PREMIER LEAGUE Tottenham v Man City 18:45 Both teams played quite well last week but with contrasting fortunes, and this will be an interesting test of both; will City bounce back with the hunger they have shown in the first few games, or will Tottenham kick on with more confidence? Spurs will have played a tougher and more recent game than City in their respective League Cup clashes, with City at Sunderland on the Tuesday, Spurs at home to Arsenal on Wednesday, and this may well be a key factor, as City’s squad is bigger and stronger than their hosts, enabling them to field a second string team that is stronger than most first teams in the Premier League. Realistically Spurs should be targeting the League Cup as a chance of silverware, and if they get the added bonus of knocking their arch rivals out on the way, in what will likely have been a tough match, we think this will leave them physically drained, and consequently we predict an away win for the league leaders.

Nigerian businessman to buy Arsenal once they let him know their bank details But once he has that then both he and Arsenal england

A prominent Nigerian businessman has declared his intention to buy Arsenal football club. An email was received by several departments of the football club on Wednesday purportedly from Mr Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest businessman, although, the email did spell his name with several ‘Z’s. It began by saying “Greeting my friends from Nigeria,” It went on to explain that he was actually a ‘man of very success,’ and how could bring ‘mutual joy’ to Arsenal football club by buying it for ‘one hundred billion dollars.’ However, according to the email, owing to banking regulations in Nigeria, Mr DangoZZte (sic) needs full details of Arsenal’s bank account, including passwords and memorable pet.

Above: A rare sighting of Arsenal Chairman Chips Keswick

will ‘be enjoying great, great excitement in the time.’ “Well, obviously it’s a tremendous offer,” said 194 year-old Chips Keswick, Chairman of Arsenal football club. “And I intend to give it the fullest consideration.” Manager Arsene Wenger was more cautious. “We shall have to wait and see,” said the Frenchman, over a plate of snails and ‘frites’. “On the one hand, one hundred million dollars could purchase many, many tiny, quick, midfielders.” “But on the other we have to assess the value in the market fully before committing and, to be frank, even with that sort of money, I will probably just choose to loan an injured Inuit left-back for half a season than buy any new players.”
