awol watches seven years of change
hua hin, THAILAND This week’s issue of AWOL marks the start of our eighth year of operation, with our 350th issue looming on the horizon. The changes in Hua Hin and the surrounding areas since we began with our first issue (published on 3rd October 2008) are remarkable, and the next twelve months will see more dramatic changes as the huge Bluport shopping mall is due to open, while it appears we may also see the final demise of the pier restaurants and other outlets on the sea side of that stretch of Naresdamri Road. In addition it seems likely that the ‘road to nowhere’ (the Canal Road widening that we reported on in issue 165 in January 2012) may finally have it’s Petchaburi section finished and linked to the main highway from Bangkok, alleviating some of the traffic problems that Hua Hin experiences, while it is also likely that the east-west roads linking to the bypass will also be completed, along with a number of other roadworks underway at present. It will also be interesting to observe what happens with the new pedestrian/bike path that has been partially completed alongside the canal - will it serve it’s intended users or become a super highway for motorbikes? While many things have changed, some things remain the same, most notably the key supplies of electricity, water and, to a lesser extent, telephony and internet services, which have all continued to be insufficient to cope with demand on many occasions. If AWOL could have one thing for our birthday it would be that the water infrastructure was sorted out once and for all, and that all developments - commercial, housing and industrial - have to make significant contributions to achieve both a better and fairer distribution of available water, and more resources to both collect and conserve water.
