rainmaking to continue into november hua hin, THAILAND The acting chief of the Royal Rain-making and Agricultural Aviation Department, Mr Lersak Riewtrakulpaibul, announced this week that the department had decided to adjust its rain-making plan by extending the operations beyond the October 15 deadline until November or until it is not possible to seed clouds. Rain-making units are currently based in Chiang Mai, Tak, Phitsanuloke, Nakhon Sawan, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani, Rayong and Prachuab Khiri Khan. Mr Lersak said that more rain-making flights will be conducted and expanded so that there would be rain covering widespread areas, especially above dams and reservoirs. However, he said that areas already affected by flood would be spared the rain-making operations. While there has been a considerable amount of rain in the Hua Hin area in recent weeks, it seems likely that the rainmaking efforts will bring more, and particularly around the Pranburi reservoir that provides most of the town’s water supplies, as in common with most dams and reservoirs in Thailand, it is not full - latest figures from the department state that Pranburi is only at 31% of it’s capacity, while the next nearest source at Kang Krachan is at 48% of it’s capacity. With a dry season that normally stretches from December through to April, these levels would not be sufficient for either household or agricultural/business use during that period. The north and north east of Thailand is equally low on water reserves, with very few registering above 40% capacity, although these areas normally receive much greater natural rainfall than is expected in the Hua Hin and surrounding areas.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... By hook or by crook By whatever means necessary - be they fair or foul. ‘Hook’ is a word with many meanings and as a consequence it appears in numerous English phases - ‘get one’s hooks into’, ‘hook, line and sinker’, ‘on/off the hook’, ‘sling your hook’ and, most notably, ‘by hook or by crook’. That last phrase is one of the holy grails of etymology; many people are sure they know the derivation but, in truth, the origin is rather obscure. We can be sure that it is a very old phrase and that it was in general use by the late 14th century. There may be examples of a form of the expression in the writings of John Wyclif from around 1380, but scholars aren’t sure of their date. The first substantiated citation is from John Gower’s Confessio Amantis, 1390. : What with hepe and what with croke they [false Witness and Perjury] make her maister ofte winne. [Hepe was the mediaeval name for a curved billhook] Gower didn’t use the modern ‘by hook or by crook’ version of the phrase, but it is clear that he was using the reference to hooks and crooks in the same sense that we do now. The earliest example of the modern usage of the phrase that can be found is in Philip Stubbes’ The Anatomie of Abuses, 1583: Either by hooke or crooke, by night or day.
recorded in the 1820s by the English rural campaigner William Cobbett, although the custom itself long predates that reference. Another commonly repeated suggestion is that the phrase comes from the names of the villages of Hook Head and the nearby Crooke, in Waterford, Ireland. Hook Head and Crooke are on opposite sides of the Waterford channel and Cromwell (born 1599, died 1658) is reputed to have said that Waterford would fall ‘by Hook or by Crooke’, that is, by a landing of his army at one of those two places during the siege of the town in 1649/50. A third suggestion is that the phrase derives from the career of Sir George Croke, a celebrated English judge. Croke (or Crook) was on the bench in the reign of Charles I (born 1600, died 1649) and became popular for his refusal to accept the legality of a ‘Ship Money’ tax imposed by Charles without the consent of Parliament. It was commonly said that ship money “may be gotten by Hook [that is, by force], but not by Crook”. It’s worth saying at this point that suggestions two and three look dubious. Both have clear links to ‘by hook or by crook’ but refer to events that are later in date than the phrase’s first uses in print. There are other suggested theories too and, although ‘wood gathering using hooks and crooks’ isn’t a provable derivation, it has to be a strong favourite. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
don’t go there! A German scientist has developed a gadget which could revolutionise the way we find our way around. By combining the functions of GPS, a mobile app, and the TENS machine, people can literally have nerves in their legs tweaked to make them change direction. Just programme in your route or destination and off you go. Imagine the possibilities! No more tour guides needed for a start. There is bound to be an audio facility to provide running commentaries, telling you when to look up at that Florentine ceiling, or down into that gorge once you have been manoeuvred into position. No more A to Z’s, or looking for a friendly policeman, and no more trying to make sense of Bangkok maps! There are of course potentially sensible uses too, such as steering home dementia sufferers and those with mental health problems who tend to get lost. (There have been times when I worked in residential care when that would have been a blessing to all concerned, including the search helicopter and dog teams deployed one time in Great Yarmouth when we misplaced a resident.) And just imagine the difference the gadgets could make to weekends in Hua Hin Night Market. Tourists could programme themselves to walk in an orderly fashion while maintaining awareness of other market browsers. No one would ever again step off a sidewalk before looking four ways. They could even arrange to deliberately avoid tailors shops. Then of course software could be developed which would enable bar owners to hack in and direct tourists through their doors without passing go. One possible downside once that hacking stage is reached - your better half learns how to programme you to avoid Patpong. But nothing’s perfect. October 9th was a very busy day in history, so narrowing events on this date down to just four hasn’t been easy. Five years earlier John Lennon was born, so expect to hear a lot of his songs today, on what would have been his 75th birthday. Lennon kindly shared his arrival in Liverpool with the bombing of St Pauls Cathedral by the Lufftwafer. Leaping back to 1562 an anatomist called Gabriel Fallopius died, after having discovered and given his name to - you guessed it
- the fallopian tube. It goes without saying that Gabriel must have had access to a lot of quite fresh cadavers, together with the need to discover how they worked. The puzzling thing is how he realised that this piece of female plumbing was important enough to bear his name, presumably without the magnification needed to identify the purpose of ovaries back then, as microscopes weren’t invented until the 1590’s. And finally - you can rest assured that Hull is bound to suffer bad weather as well this coming week. It is a long standing tradition for the rains to arrive for Hull Fair week, which begins today, the 9th. More on the history of the fair next week.

The disgraced former coach of Liverpool FC and the disgraced soon-to-be former coach of the England rugby team are going into business.
