new post office opens; old one being demolished
hua hin, THAILAND The much maligned old post office in the centre of Hua Hin is no more demolition work on the building, which had been closed for several weeks, began this week, although it is not known what will take it’s place yet. What is known though is that a new post office has now opened in a brand new building between the Mercedes dealership and Koncept furniture showroom on the Phetkasem Road north of the town, and just south of the tunnel, roughly opposite the Go Kart Hua Hin track on Soi 2. The new office currently opens on Monday to Fridays only from 8 am to 3.30 pm but has one particularly huge advantage over the old office - plenty of space to park. Whether there will also be improvements in the sorting and delivery of mail, something that has been a major criticism of the postal service in the area for many years, remains to be seen. The new office may also start to open on Saturdays if it is felt there is the need. We are sure that some residents and tourists will find the new location inconvenient, particularly those further south of the town, but there are a plethora of private operations dotted across the area who can handle most postal requirements, and no doubt many opened because of the problems at the old location, where long queues were the norm. Stamps are normally available from the shops that sell postcards and greetings cards as well. However some services are only available at the post office itself, such as poste restante and collection of mail that has to be signed for, so it must be hoped that the new office will be able to handle these better than before. As for the old location, the site must be very valuable, and our bet would be on either a hotel or a big retailer taking it on if it is being, or has been sold, and we will endeavour to find out and bring you the news.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... a bit different - inspired by the book advertised below we are going to look at the use of the word ‘heart’ in the Thai language and try to explain some of the more than 700 expressions that use it. Before we begin that though, the title of the book is ‘The Boy With The Bamboo Heart’, written by a Canadian author, Chantal Jauvin, and is the true story of Dr Amporn Wathanavongs. AWOL will be publishing an interview with Ms. Jauvin later in the year, but we asked her about the term ‘Bamboo Heart’; as far as we are aware it is not a common phrase in Thai, but her answer was that it was the perfect description of Dr Amporn’s heart, as bamboo is both strong and flexible, provides nourishment when it is young but continues to be useful as it ages. We believe the transliteration of the Thai for bamboo heart would be ‘phai jai’ or possibly ‘mai phai jai’. We encourage all our readers to attend the event and to get a copy of the book, as it is a truly incredible story. Anyway, on to more common Thai heart phrases. First up is ‘dee jai’, literally ‘good heart’ but meaning happy. Flipping that around, ‘jai dee’ means kind or generous. The opposite of this is ‘jai dam’, literally ‘black heart’ and meaning cruel or malicious. In the same vein ‘jai rai’ or ‘jai lai’ (bad heart) would be used for someone who is mean or nasty. You would also think that ‘jai mai dee’ may mean something similar, but in fact it means feeling worried. ‘Gloom jai’ (worry heart) also means this. Phrases that most foreigners will be familiar with are ‘jai yen’ (cool heart) which means calm, and ‘jai yen yen’ meaning calm down, as opposed to the state most of us get in, ‘jai rorn’ (hot heart) meaning hot tempered or impatient. Also familiar to many will be ‘dtok jai’, which means frightened or shocked (literally falling heart). A phrase that many foreigners when driving probably didn’t think existed in Thai is ‘greng jai’ (a heart in awe) which means considerate, while ‘sabai jai’ (relaxed heart) equates to being worry free.
‘Por jai’ (enough heart) simply means satisfied, while ‘mai por jai’ is the opposite. Two more that could easily be mixed up are ‘man jai’ (certain heart) meaning confident, and ‘nam jai’ (water heart) meaning generous. ‘Jai orn’ has the same literal and actual meaning, soft hearted, while it’s literal opposite, ‘jai kairng’ (hard heart) actually means strong willed, resistant or tough. Similarly ‘jai hin’ (stone heart) means adamant, and ‘jai petch’ (diamond heart) means determined. If you are sitting reading this and are getting excited about the pretty girl looking at you, then you are ‘dtem jai’ (full heart) - in other words excited. However if your wife is sitting next to you then you need to be ‘gep jai’ (collect heart) - hide your feelings, or your wife will be ‘jep jai’ (hurt heart) - feeling hurt, and may not have ‘wai jai’ (keep heart) - trust in you any more. However if she is a bit of a swinger, she might have ‘dtahm jai’ (follow heart) and go along with whatever you have in mind. If you believe that is likely though, we think you might be ‘jai ngai’ (easy heart) - gullible! One thing is for sure though - at least one of you will end up with ‘sao jai’, literally and actually a sad heart. Whether your friends will have ‘hen jai’ (see heart) sympathy for you is hard to say, but we are sure they will have ‘son jai’ (interest heart) - be interested in the story. We hope you all have ‘chorp jai’ (like heart) - are pleased with this edition of English Corner, and hopefully ‘kao jai’ (into the heart) understand this week’s deviation from the norm; we will be back to our regular offering next week. true love The Highways Agency found over 200 dead crows on the M4 near Bridgend recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone’s relief, confirmed the problem was NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be from vehicular impacts. However, during analysis it was noted that varying colours of paints appeared on the bird’s beaks and claws. By analysing these paint residues it was found that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with lorries, while only 2% were killed by cars. The Agency then hired an Ornithological Behaviourist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills. The Ornithological Behaviourist quickly concluded that when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow to warn of danger. They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout “Cah”, not a single one could shout “Lorry”

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

Fair enough Last week I threatened (sorry - promised) to explain the history of Hulls’ fair, which is in fact quite an interesting ride. Now over 700 years old, Hull Fair is the largest travelling fair in Europe, and one of the oldest. Originally founded as a place for traders to sell their wares - everything from hardware and groceries to horses and cattle - it was a commercial venture which allowed traders from out of town restricted access annually to sell for a specific length of time. (No doubt in return for the payment of a fee to the Council.) The idea being that limiting access to goods from other parts of the country encouraged more trade to develop in the town, which could sustain it during those days of civil unrest and battles. Begun by Royal Charter in 1278, the fair went through two more successive royal charters, and changes to its’ duration and starting date, which in 1751 caused a bit of a furore that now sounds more Thai than English. In 1750 England adopted the Gregorian calendar in order to come into line with other countries, including Scotland, and in doing so changed the legal New Year from March 25th to January 1st. This meant that, on paper at least, 1751 appeared to lose 12 weeks, and as the fair then began in March people believed that they had been swindled out of 11 days of their fair. Mobs took to the streets to demand their 11 days back, and to solve the problem the fairs’ start date was changed to the Friday closest to October 11th, where it remains to this day. By the 18th century the fair was changing to more of an entertainment venue, featuring jugglers, puppet shows, side shows, food of course, and a menagerie of wild animals, and by the 1890’s steam powered roundabouts and a circus had arrived. Not so different to Thailands’ temple fairs, or ‘ngan wat’, except that Hulls’ fair has little or no foundation in religious worship. The ngan wat, as the name suggests, takes place at temples, or at least very close by, space permitting, and has its’ origins in the small village gatherings which served as social events in the past. It is still essentially a time to make merit, and to share that merit making by sharing the fun, whether that be the dancing, cock fighting, music or comedy shows. Plus of course that permanent fixture. The food. Like Thailands’ temple fairs, Hulls has seen the coming and going of that dubious entertainment - the freak show, although simulated versions still take place in Thailand using actors and the magic of mirrors. course Englands famed health and safety laws have to a large extent banished the ‘wall of death’ once so popular at Hull Fair, where now even side show prizes of goldfish are banned along with any form of animal fighting or displays of wild animals. But despite the differences in origin, religious intent and political correctness, the present day 9 day long fair in Hull has one thing in common with Thailands ngan wat. An awful lot of noisy sanuk (Editor’s note: ‘sanuk’ for readers who don’t speak Thai means ‘fun’ and is also sometimes transliterated as ‘sanook’). On this day - October 16th, in 1867, Alaska adopted the Gregorian calendar. Let’s hope they didn’t have a fair going on at the time. And finally, Hull born actress Maureen Lipman, of ‘Beattie’ fame for those who remember the advert, has hijacked our column name. Her new BBC radio comedy series, which began on October 14th on Radio 4, is called ‘To Hull and Back’.
