third ‘hua hin world cup’ to be staged
hua hin, THAILAND The first weekend in December sees the third instalment of the Red Piano Hua Hin World Cup, following the tournament’s success in 2013 and 2014 when Finland beat Sweden in the final. The first event was won by Sweden beating Russia in the final. The six a side football competition will take place over two days, Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th December, at the Football Station on Soi 94 between the hours of 9am and 5pm, with an after party will be held at Urban Fuzion at 7pm. Teams have not yet been completely confirmed, with some nations still needing players to be able to confirm their participation, but definitely taking part are England, Sweden, Switzerland and Finland, while there may be a combined team from Belgium, France and Holland, depending on numbers for each of those. Ireland and Scotland are also planning on taking part. Team and player registration is still ongoing, so anybody wishing to take part should contact the organisers through the Facebook page at huahinfootballworldcup2015. Some nation’s squads are already full but if this is the case for your nationality there may be an international team put together to accommodate you. Each nation can have a squad of ten players (six in the team plus four substitutes). The organisers are very grateful to a number of sponsors, namely the main sponsor, Red Piano Restaurant and Wine Bar, Brasserie de Paris who are providing free lunches for participants, and VIQUA, the number 1 UV light water filter system company in the world. Closer to the event we hope to bring you a reminder and an update with the full list of teams along with more detail of the set up. Spectators will be welcome to attend and cheer on their respective representatives in what will be a fun weekend.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... The law is an ass Said of the application of the law that is contrary to common sense. This proverbial expression is of English origin and the ass being referred to here is the English colloquial name for a donkey, not the American ‘ass’, which we will leave behind us at this point. Donkeys have a, somewhat unjustified, reputation for obstinance and stupidity that has given us the adjective ‘asinine’. It is the stupidly rigid application of the law that this phrase calls into question. It is easy to find reference works and websites that attribute the phrase to Charles Dickens, who put it into print in Oliver Twist, 1838. When Mr. Bumble, the unhappy spouse of a domineering wife, is told in court that “...the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction”, replies: “If the law supposes that,” said Mr. Bumble, squeezing his hat emphatically in both hands, “the law is a ass - a idiot”. In fact, ‘the law is an ass’ is from a play published by the English dramatist George Chapman in 1654 - Revenge for Honour: Ere he shall lose an eye for such a trifle... For doing deeds of nature! I’m ashamed. The law is such an ass.
Whoever the author was, we can be sure it wasn’t Charles Dickens. However, it was Dickens who brought the phrase to the general public. Oliver Twist was an enormous success when it was first published as a serial and has become one of the world’s best selling novels. and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas shining a light Just when you think you have finally found the ideal internet solution to meet your needs, be it wifi access, download speeds, or the cloud, something else new sneaks over the internet horizon. And that horizon has a bad habit of creeping up much more quickly than you would have believed possible. If in fact you would have believed it possible at all. Which to me is certainly the case with ‘LiFi’, possibly the next big thing in internet access. LiFi apparently is a way to use LED light sources to transmit data instead of WiFi zones. Although not perfected yet, time flies, and no doubt it could be available sooner than we think. In some places that is. If you already struggle to find wifi zones, decent speeds or even the home screen in rural areas of Thailand it could be a long wait there for LiFi. First the country would need to totally change its’ lighting habits, but can you really imagine Thailand without all those different coloured neon tubes dangling around singing bars, hanging from trees, and illuminating the markets? It just wouldn’t be the same. Still, even if you do wish for better internet provision, spare a thought for the people of Cuba, which is one of the worlds’ worst countries for internet access. So much so that their new wifi hotspots are reported to be causing a sensation, even though they aren’t free to use. Since July over 35 hotspots have been provided there, with more to follow in the country where, according to UN information, only 3.4 percent of homes have an internet connection. So few that Cubas’ one and only undersea fibre optic cable connection - from Venezuela - can cope with demand. But despite a tempting offer from the States in the form of an exemption to their trade embargo on sales

Afraid that the country would be infiltrated with undesirable American ideology in return for such freebies is a ‘big brother’ scenario which the government doesn’t much care for. Can you really blame them? There is no ‘on this day’ this week. Instead an ‘on two days ago’ in history. October 21st 1904 was the date on which an incident at sea almost led to war between Britain and Russia. A Hull fishing fleet of 45 trawlers had cast their nets off the Dogger Bank. It was a dark foggy night, and the crews were all busy when they encountered a fleet of what they thought were British warships. Suddenly the trawlers were flooded by lights from the warships, which immediately opened fire on them. With their nets down the trawlers were unable to escape, and endured a barrage of fire for 20 minutes from what were actually Russian ships. At that time Russia and Japan were at war with each other, and the Russian ships should never have attacked what was clearly a fishing fleet, its’ nets and vessel shapes clearly visible in the glare of lights from the warships. Just two of the 45 trawlers made it back to Hull, flags flying at half mast, and a major diplomatic incident ensued. Over 100 years later we can still imagine what that feels like.

Liverpool fans demand to know why new manager hasn’t turned things around yet england LIVERPOOL fans are demanding the dismissal of the man who has now had over 21 days as the club’s new manager. Jurgen Klopp has failed to make Liverpool the most feared club in football despite having had one game and three weeks in the job. After a dismal goalless draw with struggling Tottenham Hotspurs last Saturday, the fans have been quick to turn on the man who they think is to blame. Season ticket holder Norman Steele said: “I’m a patient man but Klopp should have restored us to the pinnacle of European football by now. You have to question his commitment, especially as he has not yet wiped that silly grin off his face. And where are all the big new signings?” Kevin Backley was equally disappointed,
and said, “Spurs are useless and we can’t even score a goal against them - how can we possibly expect to win the league now?” Stephen Malley said: “How much longer are we going to give Klopp? He’s done almost nothing so far. I’m going to set up a Klopp Out Facebook group.”
