hua hin, THAILAND On Tuesday reports started coming in that something black was washing up on several parts of Hua Hin Beach, and this turned out to be oil, which was coating every piece of flotsam and jetsom washing up on the beach.

Hua Hin mayor Nopporn Wuthikul then closed the beach and ordered local health and environmental officials to clean it up and collect samples for testing but at time of writing it was unknown how long this would take or when the beach would reopen.

Hua Hin deputy mayor Pailin Kongphan said it was the first time oil had washed up on Hua Hin beach. The navy had been asked to track down the source, he said. The mayor said the hardest-hit areas were a stretch of about 10 kilometres from Khao Takiap to the Hua Hin fishing pier, and in front of the Klai Kangwon Palace. The major cleanup began at 9am on Wednesday morning, involving employees from the Hua Hin municipality, district office and civilian volunteers who scooped up blackened sand and oil-coated objects, disposing of them in black bags hauled away by garbage trucks. People are warned to stay away from the beach and sea until official notices are posted advising that the water quality has returned to normal.

The oil slicks are diminishing as the days go by, but speculation is rife as to where they came from, with some internet forum users suggesting that they might be connected to the container vessel that sank on September 19th about eight nautical miles off Samut Prakan, killing four crewmen.

Samples taken should reveal the source within about two weeks, said Surachai Sinprakorb, an official from the provincial energy office.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is..... Run the gauntlet To go through a series of criticisms or harsh treatments at the hands of one’s detractors.

Gauntlets are familiar to us today as the stout leather gloves used for gardening and the like. Mediaeval gauntlets were made of even sterner stuff. Gauntlets, or gantlettes, gauntelotes etc., formed part of suits of armour. They were usually covered with plates of steel and were as useful for attack as for defence. When a dispute arose involving a member of the English nobility who was wealthy enough to own his own armour then he (it was always a he) would literally ‘throw down the gauntlet’ as a challenge. That phrase is first recorded in Hall’s Chronicles of Richard III, 1548: “Makynge a proclamacion, that whosoeuer would saie that kynge Richard was not lawefully kynge, he woulde fighte with hym at the vtteraunce, and threwe downe his gauntlet.”

Another ancient custom of British fighting men was a form of punishment in which the culprit was made to run stripped to the waist between two rows of men who whipped and beat him as he passed by. These beatings were extremely severe and the victims often died as a result - and many of those that didn’t may well have wished they had, as survivors were sometimes executed afterwards. This punishment is the source of the term ‘running the gauntlet’ and was used by both the British army and navy.

It would be natural to assume that gauntlets were used in the beatings and that ‘running the gauntlet’ derived from that. In fact, that’s not the case and neither the punishment nor the phrase have anything to do with gauntlets, either military or horticultural.

The name of the brutal punishment was originally ‘running the gantelope’. Gantlope is an Anglicized form of the Swedish word ‘gatlop’, or ‘gatu-lop’, which

refers to the gate of soldiers that the victim had to pass through. The Ist Earl of Shaftsbury recorded the phrase in his Diary, 1646: “Three were condemned to die, two to run the gantelope.”

It didn’t take long for gantlope to migrate into ganlet, or gauntlet - possibly as a result of a simple muddle over the similar-sounding words or possibly because of the association with the use of gauntlets as weapons and with the antagonism implicit in ‘throwing down the gauntlet’.

The earliest known record of the gantlet form of the phrase is in Joseph Glanvill’s The Vanity of Dogmatizing, 1661: “To print, is to run the gantlet, and to expose ones self to the tongues strapado.”

The first use of the currently used ‘gauntlet’ spelling comes from the intriguingly named Increase Mather, in The History of King Philip’s War, 1676: “They stripped them naked, and caused them to run the Gauntlet.”

Some writers, recognising that ‘gauntlet’ was used in error, continued to use the ‘gantelope’ version into the 18th and 19th centuries - well after the word was archaic and otherwise unused; for example, Henry Fielding in The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling , 1749: “Some said he ought to be tied neck and heels; others that he deserved to run the gantlope.”

Any such attempts are now long abandoned and we are left with a ‘gauntlet’ phrase that has nothing to do with gauntlets.

OK a bit of an exaggeration, but at the moment the city centre of Hull seems on track to turn itself into a pretty good impression of a war zone.

That’s the price we must pay for being chosen as City of Culture 2017, together with its’ award of 18 million pounds which is being used to improve our image in readiness for the event.

So with unnatural zeal the City Council has set about digging everything up. Needless to say there are some mixed feelings amongst the locals. But although the city centres paved areas are certainly ready for a makeover, it is a recently revealed new logo which is dividing public opinion and causing the usual kind of ‘how much?’ and ‘load of ****’ reactions.

Anyone wishing to risk going cross eyed can view the logo by searching online for ‘Hull City of Culture 2017 logo’.

At least the logo diverted our attention a little from the state of the UK steel industry, which you have probably heard is not good. Like Thailand and rice, China apparently doesn’t know what to do with all it’s surplus cheap steel - while UK steel struggles, and fails against the lower, often subsidised steel prices of other countries.

The situation wasn’t helped by the coincidental timing of a state visit to the UK by Chinas’ President. Aimed at strengthening our ties with the super power, there were strident calls for David Cameron to spoil the whole thing by raising the thorny issue of cheap Chinese steel in the midst of the state banquets and football matches.

AN APOLOGY

The story we ran in our issue of 16th October 2015 regarding the new Post Office stated that it was now open, and while this is indeed the case, we have only recently been informed by one of our readers that it is only open for parcel collections and nothing else, and all other services must be conducted at the temporary post office in the Pure Plaza on Phetkasem Road a couple of hundred metres north of the traffic lights at Chomsin Road (Soi 70/55).

We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused, but when we checked with the new office before running the story, we were told that it was fully functional. At the present time we do not know when the other services will be available at the new office but any parcel collections must be done there.

Manchester derby to replace water-boarding as most extreme form of torture england Torturers around the world hailed yesterday’s Manchester derby as a new, incredibly powerful weapon in their arsenal.

“Previously, water-boarding and battering the soles of feet have been considered the worst tortures that we can perform,” said Simon Williams, retired torturer for the Tony Blair regime.

“But that Manchester derby? Normal human beings are simply not able to endure that sort of thing. I think fifteen minutes of that would crack anyone.”

The Manchester derby played out on Sunday and was so crushingly boring that Match of the Day pundit Jermaine Jenas broke down in tears midway through the second half.

“It was a harrowing, awful ninety minutes,” he said, his voice calm, but his eyes betraying the appalling nature of what he’d witnessed.

“The highlight was when a pigeon flew over

the stadium.”

“No one should ever have to sit through that again, it was inhumane.”

The United Nations is already preparing to step in to try and prevent videos of the match getting into the hands of nations who regularly use torture such as North Korea, Syria and the USA. “I think we can all accept that a little light water-boarding is acceptable to prevent an atrocity,” said UN Representative Gillian Bird “But to make someone sit through a full replay of the Manchester derby? It would be a crime against humanity.”
