scandal over Rajabhakti Park
hua hin, THAILAND Accusations regarding corruption in the construction of the giant statues placed in the recently opened Rajabhakti Park just south of the centre of Hua Hin have been vigorously denied by former Army Chief and current Deputy Defence Minister Udomdej Sitabutr, while at the same time investigators from the Central Investigation Bureau are looking into possible irregularities in the army’s one-billion-baht project. “The project was implemented transparently. There were no irregularities in the work,” Sitabutr was reported as saying Tuesday. “Some people asked for commission fees from the owners of factories which cast the statues,” he said. “When we discovered this, we returned the money to the factory owners, but they decided to donate the money as charity.” This followed comments by deputy police spokesman Maj General Piyaphan Pingmuang who told media on Monday that an investigation was ongoing to determine whether Pol Colonel Kachachart Boondee, who is facing an arrest warrant over lese-majeste charges, was involved in the alleged irregularities in the Rajabhakti Park project. Several news outlets reported that police suspected a military officer of having appropriated 20 to 30 million baht from the project, and one identified Boondee. General Udomdej, who chaired the Rajabhakti Park Foundation when he was army chief, said the park had been developed with the sincere intention of making it a national treasure, but declined to comment on Colonel Boondee, who is said to have illegally crossed into Myanmar from Mae Hong Song on November 1st. Thai authorities have already asked Myanmar to deport him.

Tesco has posted a job advert for a Christmas light untangler, and they want the unknotting expert to start work as soon as possible ready for the festive season. The basic idea is that customers bring in their Christmas lights which they can’t actually untangle (we’ve all been there) and expert will get them back to their unravelled original state in store. The main criteria for this modern day festive elf is that they should be able to ‘successfully untangle customers’ Christmas lights neatly, quickly and efficiently and in an orderly fashion.’ Specifically, they must be able to untangle three metres of Christmas lights in under three minutes at the store in Wrexham, north Wales. That’s quite an ask, but if you are good at puzzles, Rubix cubes and the like maybe it could be you. That’s not all, though. A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... As nice as ninepence Neat, tidy, well-ordered. The variants, ‘as right as ninepence’ and ‘as neat as ninepence’ are just as common as the ‘nice’ version (also, less commonly, ‘as clean as ninepence’ and ‘as grand as ninepence’) and it isn’t clear which came first. There are suggestions that this expression derives from from ‘as nice as ninepins’. In the game of Ninepins (Skittles) the pins are set out in a square. For the game to be fair this must be done neatly and accurately or, in the old parlance, nicely. That derivation is attractive but seems unlikely, as there is no early records of ‘as nice as ninepins’ in print, which we might expect if the ‘ninepence’ version derived from it. The ‘ninepins’ form, in the guise of ‘as smart as ninepins’ isn’t found until the 20th century, so it is reasonable to assume that it is a simple mishearing of the earlier ‘as neat/clean/grand as ninepence’ versions. The earliest known recorded form of the phrase is ‘as neat as ninepence’; the first citation is in James Howell’s English Proverbs, 1659:
“As fine as fippence, as neat as nine pence.” The ‘fippence’ (five pence) here makes it clear that the reference is to money rather than to skittles. For it to appear in a list of sayings viewed as proverbial it must have been in existence for some time before 1659. There was a ninepence coin in circulation in the 16th and 17th centuries, although there was nothing especially neat or nice about it. The rhyming and alliterative style of the citation suggests that the ‘neat’ and ‘nice’ were chosen just for that reason. The form ‘as nice as ninepence’ didn’t arise until recently, in the late 20th century.

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas happy pineapple day! November 13th is Tinned Pineapple Anniversary Day. You just couldn’t make it up. In fact the 13th is thought to be the day in 1895 when the worlds’ first canned pineapples were shipped out of Hawaii, where the worlds’ first pineapple canning factory had opened in 1892. In reality the shipment was more likely to have been of the first successfully canned pineapple, and no one seems to know where it was bound. But as far as anniversarys go it’s still 120 years since the world found the ideal accompaniment to gammon. Around the same time a canning factory was also opened in Malaya, although Hawaii remained the biggest producer until the 1990’s, having become home to James Doles’ first pineapple plantation in 1901. Dole is a name worth looking at further, but first a little more background on the pineapple. Thought to be native to South America, it was Christopher Columbus who discovered the fruit while on his travels, and took some home to Spain in the 1600’s. He was fortunate that once picked the pineapple, unlike bananas, stops ripening. Which meant that his discovery was very well received, particularly amongst Royalty and the seriously rich. The popularity of the pineapple spread through the wealthier European countries, and in 1675 royal gardener John Rose was the first person to grow a pineapple in Britain, which he presented to his boss, King Charles 2nd. By the 1700’s the colour and appearance of the fruit had made it a symbol of wealth and power. Carvings of pineapples adorned buildings. Just one fruit could cost up to 8,000 dollars in todays money, and they were hired as centrepieces for society parties. If you had a pineapple you had truly arrived.

It is all very strange to imagine today, when in a good season they sell for 10 baht on the sois. (I’m allowing for inflation - 10 years ago it was 5 baht.) Back to James Dole. Known as the King of the Pineapple, his empire spread from Hawaii to Thailand, with the plantation just down the road from you folk in Hua Hin, as well as those in Chumphon and Rayong. But it was the Thai Pineapple Canning Industry Corporation Limited thankfully known as TPC - which opened Thailands’ first processing factory in 1962 in Pranburi. By 1978 TPC had grown through mergers and opened its’ second site in Rayong, and now operates more than 23 factories in Thailand, which overtook Hawaii as the worlds’ largest exporter of pineapple products. Here in England though it is a shame to think that many people - unlike Charles 2nd - are still only familiar with pineapple from a can. Of course the real thing is often available now, but looks much more daunting to tackle than a simple tin can. And even when people do pluck up the courage to cut into the imported fruit, somehow it just doesn’t taste the same as those carefully cut segments, bristling with toothpicks, which are presented in Thai eateries at the end of meal.

There will be memories of the European Championship Finals in 1992 held in Sweden where these two were drawn in the same group, and ultimately Sweden got to the semi-finals (losing to Germany) while Denmark beat the Germans in the final, the best ever performance by both teams in the history of the competition. Denmark probably have slightly the upper hand this time as they play away first, but we think Sweden have the stronger team; however playoffs are notoriously nervy afairs and this really could go either way.
