jazz festival rises from the ashes

victorguesthouse@gmail.com 032 511564 60 Naresdamri Road, Hua Hin

hua hin, THAILAND After the disastrous last minute cancellation of this year’s Jazz Festival, originally scheduled for June, then July, then confirmed as 8th August but being pulled for no obvious reason at very short notice, it has now been announced that it will take place on Saturday 28th November at the Wave Beach Club at the Hyatt Regency. The five acts announced will begin at 5pm and are scheduled to run to 10pm, with an all Asian line up bar one, as follows: 5 - 6 pm Neung Jakkawai (Thailand) 6 - 7 pm Jerry Byrd Quartet (USA) 7 - 8 pm Pom, Jirapan, Eddie and Somchai (Thailand) 8 - 9 pm Jeremy Monteiro (Singapore) 9 - 10 pm ETC (Thailand) As far as we can ascertain there is free admission, as is normally the case, but very few other details are available. What little promotion that has been carried out for the event has been in Thai. As regular readers will know, AWOL has always been very supportive of both the concept and promotion of the Jazz Festival, because when it first began in 2001 it was a truly great event, taking over the whole town and drawing thousands for the weekend. It remained this way for a few years but has rapidly declined and was not even staged in 2012, and has been reduced to a one evening event in recent years, with no fixed abode or even time of year when it will take place. We hope that this year’s concert will succeed, and we are sure it will be very enjoyable, but it has long since ceased to earn the epithet ‘festival’ in our eyes; let us hope that new life can be breathed into this formerly brilliant annual spectacle.

REMEMBRANCE DAY AT DIZZY DOLPHIN Last Wednesday 11th November, around 50 people gathered (some of the attendees shown below right) at the Dizzy Dolphin in Samorphrong, to show their respects to the fallen heroes of the First, Second and other wars since. The Ode Of Rememberance was read by Tom Cropper, joint organiser, and this was followed by a two minutes silence at 11am, the Last Post, and then a toast by Ted. The Guest of Honour was then introduced, a remarkable man from a remarkable family of servicemen; Gordon McKeegan (pictured below left, on the right, next to Tom, Ted and Steve) is now 92 and has lived in Hua Hin for the last 14 years, volunteered at the age of 17, and rose to Colour Sergeant in the Guards Independent Company (Grenadier Guards). He is one of six Liverpool brothers, all Guardsmen, three of whom helped to form the 1st Parachute Regiment and among the first forty to be enrolled. This became the 2nd SAS Commando. Four of them were in the Parachute Regiment, two were captured at Arnhem, and fought in the Western Desert. Gordon fought at Nijmegen. The youngest brother went from the Para’s into Air Despatch and was captured in Holland. Thank you to all who attended; this was the second time remembrance had been observed in this way in Hua Hin, with the idea coming from joint organisers Ted and Steve, who both served in the Queen’s Lancs Regiment, and the plan is to hold the service every year from now on. Poppies are available year round from Hua Hin Ham and Bacon in Soi 41, and last year 20,000 baht was raised for the Roayl British Legion(this year’s total not yet available)

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Left in the lurch Abandoned in a difficult position without help. This has nothing to do with lurches in the sense of sudden unsteady movements. There are suggestions that lurch is a noun that originated from lich - the Old English word for corpse. Lych-gates are roofed churchyard entrances that adjoin many old English churches and are the appointed place for coffins to be left when waiting for the clergyman to arrive to conduct a funeral service. To be ‘left in the lych/lurch’ was to be in dire straits indeed. Another theory goes that jilted brides would be ‘left in the lych’ when the errant bridegroom failed to appear for a wedding. Both theories are plausible but there’s no evidence to support either and, despite the superficial appeal of those explanations, ‘lych’ and ‘lurch’ aren’t related. In fact, the phrase originates from the French board game of lourche or lurch, which was similar to backgammon and was last played in the 17th century (the rules having now been lost). Players suffered a lurch if they were left in a hopeless position from which they couldn’t win

the game. The card game of cribbage, or crib, also has a ‘lurch’ position which players may be left in if they don’t progress half way round the peg board before the winner finishes. The figurative usage of the phrase had certainly entered the language by the 16th century as this line from Nashe’s Saffron Walden, 1596, shows: “Whom he also procured to be equally bound with him for his new cousens apparence to the law, which he neuer did, but left both of them in the lurtch for him.” The game came to England from continental Europe and its name derives from the word ‘left’, which is ‘lurtsch’ in dialect German and ‘loyrtz’ in Middle Dutch. Why call a game ‘left’? The most plausible explanation (and regular readers will know that, in etymology, plausibility isn’t everything) is that it relates to the bad feeling against the left hand that was then commonplace in many cultures. In English we have held on to this with the word ‘sinister’, which derives from the Latin for ‘left’, whereas ‘dextrous’ derives from the Latin for ‘right’.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 You never thought you’d be the type to laugh at the old pie-in-the-face gag, but that was before you found a recipe for ball-bearing-and-glass pie. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 Try and get back to basics this week. Learning to dress yourself, brush your teeth, and eat with utensils would be a good place to start. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 Nothing you’ve ever been through has prepared you for how much you miss Kate. Every other time you’ve missed people either somewhat more or a little less, so this time is new. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20 It’s not the hammer of life that’s going to beat you down this week, but the ladle of Kathy Clodmeyer, who is frankly sick of you asking for more gravy.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 If nothing else, next week will certainly be a lesson to you about listening to Dan when he gives you advice about good sources of all-natural fiber. Gemini May 22 – June 21 They’ll say it’s for your own good, but you really don’t see how this much electricity running through your genitals could possibly be beneficial. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 Learn to appreciate the little things in life, because the big things will either cost more than you have or take more time than you’ve got left. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 Jealousy will rear its ugly head in your life next week, look around, blink, burst out laughing, and then tell Envy, Lust, and Greed to get a load of how pathetic you are.

Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 Your growing belief that there are monsters in the closet wouldn’t be a concern if you weren’t in command of so many main battle tanks. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 It’s true that animals like you, but that’s mostly because you’re fat and slow and will be easy to cut from the herd when your time comes. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 It’s true they say that all’s fair in love and war, but actually, the use of hollow-point ammunition and mustard gas is banned in both. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 The doctors will claim you’re only coming in for a routine checkup, but as soon as you’re through the door, your arch enemy’s theme music will ring across the operating theatre. 9

old pilot An old Marine Pilot sat down at the Starbucks, still wearing his old USMC flight jacket and ordered a cup of coffee. As he sat sipping his coffee, a young woman sat down next to him. She turned to the pilot and asked, “Are you a real pilot?” He replied, ‘Well, I’ve spent my whole life flying planes, first Stearmans, then the early Grummans... flew a Wildcat and Corsair in WWII, and later in the Korean conflict, Banshees and Cougars. I’ve taught more than 260 people to fly and given rides to hundreds, so I guess I am a pilot, and you, what are you? She said, ‘I’m a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about naked women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about naked women. When I shower, I think about naked women. When I watch TV, I think about naked women. It seems everything makes me think of naked women.’ The two sat sipping in silence. A little while later, a young man sat down on the other side of the old pilot and asked: “Are you a real pilot?” He replied, ‘I always thought I was, but I just found out I’m a lesbian.’ choking Following a recent choking tragedy, authorities are advising that parents should always cut grapes in half before giving them to young children. That sounded like too much hassle to me, but being safety-conscious I now give my lad a knife with his grapes.

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas public services My new definition of knowing you are getting old is when the rock idols of your youth have to sit down during a gig. This replaces that old chestnut about policeman beginning to look young - because in a growing portion of the UK it would be re-assuring just to spot a policeman now and then, regardless of their age. True, once a month a police woman and a female PCSO (police community support officer) park themselves in my local community centre in order to listen to any concerns the locals may have. This did prove useful a few months ago, when their presence led to the discovery of body in a flat across the road, (natural causes by the way) but apart from that they just drink cups of tea and catch up with the gossip. It’s interesting that women officers are allocated such community liaison work - maybe the men consider it beneath them and prefer to be out with the blue lights and the dogs. But gender issues aside, is it more likely that the British police force in general just doesn’t have enough staff to go around? There is certainly concern over government cuts in policing, which have been hefty since 2010, and are predicted to continue until 2020. So it is surprising to hear that on top of all the cuts, and an increasing dependence on private companies and volunteers, the government now proposes to look at the requirement for new police recruits to hold degrees. Which, along with the high educational requirements for teaching and nursing, would at least be one way to encourage even more young people to stay on at school and university rather than clutter up the Jobcentres. Except of course that we are also losing qualified teachers and nurses in droves. Official reasons cited for these staff losses are always things like ‘they leave to work abroad’ or ‘there are better incentives in private

industry’. Never that they are simply stressed out by their working conditions. Some of this though could be good news for native English speaking teachers working in Thailand, whose jobs are also now under threat. At least if they are forced to return to the UK for work there should be plenty of vacancies for them, providing they beat the influx of Spanish, French and Portuguese teachers to it. So what exactly is going on in Thai schools? And does it make long term sense to propose ‘slashing’ the number of native English speaking teachers there? Thailand has a very poor standard of English language skills, and we recognise that it is a difficult language for Thai people to learn. So will being taught English by native Thai speakers help in any way? We are told that the new initiative will ensure that 500 Thai teachers, whose English is already the best, will be given 6 week intensive training courses by specialists (presumably English ones) from the British Council. This will provide them with the skills to successfully pass on their knowledge. What will happen after that is likely to be in the lap of the gods - soothsayers - or the nearest Banyan tree. But whatever the result we will still probably accept it as the Thai way, with maybe just a hint of admiration for their ongoing ‘sabai sabai’. November 23rd in history doesn’t seem to have a lot going for it, apart from the usual skirmishes along the way. To be fair the 22nd of November was the big date which shocked the world, with the assassination of President John F Kennedy in 1963. That is an impossible event to follow, so let’s stick to the mundane. On November 23rd 1897 the humble pencil sharpener was patented. 118 years on and they still don’t work properly! 15

Sunday 22nd November 2015 PREMIER LEAGUE Soi 102, Hua Hin (200m on right after railway) Tottenham v West Ham 23:00 While this is always seen as a fierce derby match, it’s not often that it also has the importance it does this season, with both teams challenging for European places and possibly even the title. West Ham have won against every side they have faced away from last season’s top six, but not fared as well against the so-called lesser sides. Injuries are a worry, with key playmaker Dimitri Payet and speed merchant Antonio Valencia missing, but they might have main striker Diafra Sakho back, who has been a big miss. Alex Song may make the bench. For Spurs both Nacer Chadli (injury) and Erik Lamela (suspension) are definitely out, while Moussa Dembele is a doubt. This is a tough one to call - both teams had decent but frustrating draws last time out, and the key here may well be how quickly they start after the two week international break. As Spurs are at home they will be expected to attack, which could suit the Hammers counter attacking style, so we are going to predict a narrow away win. fixtures

no way of the warrior Arsenal reluctantly drops samurai regime from training schedule

england AFTER repeated injury problems, Arsenal has decided to remove Samurai training from its weekly schedule. With Aaron Ramsey suffering from a hamstring problem, Hector Bellerin shrugging off a groin complaint and Jack Wilshere out for several months with a sword embedded in his skull, the club has been forced to reconsider their training regime. Club doctor Tom Logan said: “Arsenal’s players work harder than any other Premier League side’s to ensure they’re ready for whatever is thrown at them, especially boiling oil or spears. “But we’re starting to wonder if perhaps we should put less of a focus on sword fighting and just practice passing a ball around. “It’s tough for Arsene Wenger when the fixtures are coming thick and fast and you’ve lost key players to arrow piercings, spear

skewering and decapitations. For most clubs even one decapitation per season is too many.” However, while Wenger has partially relaxed his training regime, the French tactician will still force all members of his squad to attend training sessions in full Samurai armour. He said: “I see my team as an army and like an army I want them to be tough, well-drilled and harrowed by the horrors they have seen. “If a player can’t take the odd flaming arrow to the neck from a teammate then what chance does he have on a wet Tuesday night in Stoke?”
