hua hin, THAILAND There is no doubt that Hua Hin has changed over the years, and that this change will continue for better or worse. Many things have improved, such as the range of available options for eating, drinking and shopping, while others have not, most notably the infrastructure. However one aspect of the town that is less quantifiable than those is the overall ‘feel’ of the town; a couple of decades ago it was easily classified as a small and quaint town which largely depended on fishing and domestic tourists who wanted to come to the place the Royal Family holidayed in. The centre of the town was filled with old traditional teak houses, narrow streets and alleys and samlors galore; aspects of that remain but are slowly but surely disappearing, with many of the old houses either pulled or burnt down and replaced by modern shophouses. and others converted into bars, restaurants, tailors or opticians. Equally there is clearly a desire to eventually remove two aspects that gives Hua Hin it’s unique charm - the piers along Naresdamri Road which mainly host restaurants and guesthouses, and the night bazaar area near the Hilton. The growth of the town does demand certain improvements will need to occur, but destroying elements that make Hua Hin different should be avoided, sometimes even though financially in the short term it makes sense; long term though the danger is creating a soulless clone of any beach resort in Thailand., much like how the High Streets of the UK went from being vibrant, fun and unique places to go shopping to what they are now; dull, functional, and all the same. Change is inevitable, but there is a responsibility by those in charge to manage it so it does not kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Draw a blank To fail to recall a memory or fail in some speculative effort. This phrase originates from the lottery that was established in Tudor England. Elizabeth I, like the monarchs of other European countries at the time, was short of money and decided to copy rival nation states by instituting a national lottery. The money so raised was intended to go towards the ‘reparation of the havens and strength of the Realm and towards further public works’. She signed the license granting the lottery in 1567 (not so much a signature, more a craft project). Lotteries at that time worked by putting tickets with the participant’s names on them into a ‘lot pot’. An equal number of notes, some with the prizes written on them and some of which were blank, went into another pot. Pairs of tickets were drawn simultaneously from the two pots. It is easy to see how a failure to succeed came to be associated with drawing a blank. Sir William More (1520-1600), when he found time to spare from his numerous other posts, which included ‘Her Majesty’s Deputy Master of the Swans’, was the ‘Treasurer of the Lottery in Surrey’. The Loseley

Manuscripts are a unique archive of the More-Molyneux family who have for centuries lived in the beautiful Tudor manor house Loseley Park. The manuscripts contain a unique record of life in Tudor and Stuart England and include More’s description of the lottery: “A verie rich Lotterie ... without any blancks.” And so it should have been. The tickets cost ten shillings each - at a time when labourers were paid about a shilling a day. The prizes included silver plate and tapestry. Although the first time that someone ‘drew a blank’ was in the 16th century, the phrase wasn’t recorded in print until the 19th, in Washington Irving’s Tales of a Traveller, 1824, in which the plot involves a character being given credit for something he hadn’t done: “It is like being congratulated on the high prize when one has drawn a blank.” Soon after that date the phrase began to be used in hunting circles; for example, from the 1832 Hunting Songs by the impressively named Rowland Eyes Egerton-Warburton: “The man - whose heart heaves a sigh when his gorse is drawn blank.” Later in the 19th century it became used in a general figurative sense to mean to be unsuccessful in a venture or search of any kind.

the surgery MEDICAL EMERGENCIES It’s one of those days. Dad slumps across the dinner table clutching his chest, mother is drifting into a Diabetic coma, daughter is starting to miscarry and baby is drinking from the drain-cleaner bottle. Keep calm everybody, let us consider our options and select the best plan of action!!! In each of the above scenarios it is important to get to a hospital Emergency Department ASAP and in Thailand the logistics in doing so are not easy. Traffic jams may make getting to the hospital difficult and if you summon an ambulance it may quadruple the time, as it may have trouble getting to you, finding your house and getting back to the hospital.. I loved to ride the ambulances in Canada. We would get onto a Highway or major city road, ease into the left lane, put on the lights and siren and then we would slice through the traffic like a hot knife through butter, as every other vehicle pulled over to let us pass; it’s not quite like that in Thailand. So the first decision is should you call an ambulance or get their using your own vehicle or a taxi. There are some situations where it is essential to call for help. If the patient has had a fall or accident and there is a fear of bone injury, then the patient needs to be moved professionally. This is particularly important if there is any fear of spinal or neck injury. We think of pain in a negative way but pain does make sense and tells us how to behave. If the patient experiences pain on significant movement, then it is probably best to wait for help. However, in most cases time is at a premium and the four patients that we mentioned all need to get to the hospital as soon as possible. With heart attacks or stroke, if you can get to an ER in less than an hour your chances of recovery are very good. In most western cities the Ambulance service is a city service and they make the determination which hospital to take you to, based partly on your preference. but also on proximity and ER availability. In Bangkok

an occasional look at medical matters with Dr Michael Moreton the Police have ambulances but if you use this service you may not have a choice on where to go. In Hua Hin the hospitals have ambulances that are staffed with well trained personnel. Keep the telephone number of your hospital of choice in a convenient place. Two things to do before leaving, grab all the medications that the patient takes and take them with you to show to the Doctors. When you are on your way to the hospital, if it is possible call the ER and tell them that you are on your way. Don’t tell long stories about the medical history or your diagnosis, just what the symptoms or problems are at this moment. This way they can prepare for your arrival. An Ex-pat mother showed me something years ago that I have recommended to many families. She kept in her laptop a medical history of each member of the family and details of any medication they were taking. She added the findings at any health check-up or other health care visits to her data base. Then, if any member of the family was taken to hospital she could access this information and show it to the treating doctor. She also had each child keep a copy of their medical record in their back-packs. Dr Mike, a HH resident, is a not-quite-retired Doctor who previously plied his trade in Canada, China and Thailand.

And this years’ award for the most cringe worthy of the lot has to go to John Lewis. Sponsored by Age UK (previously Age Concern) the message conveyed is laudable enough - that we should think of all the elderly people who are on their own at Christmas. And with an ageing population in the UK their numbers are bound to increase. To that end we are shown an old man sitting all on his own on the moon waiting for a child back on Earth to send him a gift. Amazons delivery systems must be improving, while clearly the UK’s housing crisis is getting worse. Not to worry though, China is going to rescue us - in particular those of us who live north of Watford - with multi million pound Chinese investment deals proposed for the Manchester Airport City project, green power stations for Wales, and other projects in Leeds, Sheffield and Salford. Sceptics doubt that the promised investment will materialise, while supporters point out that the UK governments’ need to invest heavily in economic growth leaves it with no choice. Especially if we are indeed to have our proposed ‘Northern Powerhouse’, complete with high speed rail links. The US apparently isn’t too happy about our new Chinese chums, but might just be jealous of their spending power. Chinese visitors are reported to spend five times more in Harrods than American tourists do. Personally I would welcome anything that would help expand Hulls’ Chinese Supermarket, which is the only place in these parts where you can find fresh lemon grass. And who knows, perhaps the UK will end up joining ASEAN before Thailand gets around to it.

Meanwhile the EU has voted to end the 100 million Euros in agricultural subsidies being used to raise bulls for bullfighting, on the basis that bullfighting is part of Spains’ culture. Campaigners have been trying to put an end to bullfighting in Spain for years, and most of us will doubt that the lack of EU subsidies will actually put an end the sport, any more than we believe cock fighting can be banned in Thailand. But the puzzling thing is how in the name of culture the subsidies were agreed in the first place. On November 27th 1967 the president of France, Charles De Gaulle, stated that he would veto Britains application to join the Common Market. He warned the five other countries who were partners in the EEC then - Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands - that if they tried to impose Britains’ membership on France the result would be the breakup of the Union. It was the second time De Gaulle had threatened the veto, citing our close relationship with the US as one reason, and it wasn’t until 1973, after his demise, that Britain finally joined. You have to wonder what De Gaulle would have thought of Europe today.

Liverpool ace Daniel Sturridge has been ruled out of contention for six weeks after a terrifying accident at his home. The injury was sustained when the striker tripped and fell into several giant balls of fluffy cotton wool, which the club use to line the walls of his house following recommendations from leading medical specialists. A team of surgeons was called in to assess the latest damage to Sturridge. They gave him a sicknote to take to Anfield, but unfortunately he sustained paper cuts as he was handing the document over to Liverpool’s new manager Jurgen Klopp. The news is a major setback for Sturridge who was making a good recovery after sustaining a twig wound a month ago while enjoying a walk in Formby Squirrel Reserve. I remember once when I was a centre half I played 90 minutes with concussion,’ Mr Nutter added. ‘Gaffer said he’d never seen me play so well. From that day on, just before every game he used to hit me over the head with a hammer. Happy times.’
