hua hin, THAILAND Among all the festivals and celebrations that occur every year in Thailand, Father’s Day here is probably the one which shows the biggest outpouring of emotion, and spawns the most events nationwide, because it is the day that Thai’s celebrate not only their own Dads, but the father of Thailand, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who this year turns 88 years old. Hua Hin, as the adopted permanent retreat of His Majesty, holds a special place in the hearts of all Thais, and thousands will come to the town to show their love and support for their monarch, in the hope that they can get a glimpse of him on this special day. The actual day this year is tomorrow, Saturday 5th December, and one very special event planned in Hua Hin is the carving of a giant Buddha ice sculpture; award winning ice sculptor Alongkorn Timcharoen, of Hua Hin, said that he and six fellow ice artists would transform 99 blocks of ice into the planned world’s tallest Buddha ice statue, at 599 cm. It will be sculpted on open ground in front of Hua Hin railway station, between noon and 7pm, adding more colour to this year’s activities to celebrate His Majesty’s birthday. There will be a candlelight ceremony at the same location that night, among several other planned events there and around the town. Roads will be busy anyway, as it is a long weekend with Monday a public holiday due to Father’s Day falling on a weekend, but no doubt the roads near the palace will be particularly busy, as it is the normal place people will congregate on this special day. AWOL would like to take this opportunity to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all Dad’s out there, and special wishes to His Majesty the King as a father to his children and his country, and a very happy birthday too.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Run rings around To easily outrun or outclass and opponent. ’Running rings around’ originated as an English hunting term. It was used by fox-hunters but more often by those indulging in hare-coursing, which is now banned in the UK. The circling runs made by the hare in its attempts to outrun the chasing greyhounds were called rings. The first person to refer in print to rings with that meaning was the Member of Parliament for Ipswich, William Churchill, in 1717: “Hunt circling Hares, or wily Foxes chase, Their mazy Rings, and fly Meanders trace.” ‘Running rings’ came a little later. The first example that can be found of the expression in print is in the hunting text Stable Talk and Table Talk, Charles Brindley, 1846: “Was it a bad scenting country, or were foxes scarce?” He said, “Neither: but the foxes were apt to run rings.” ‘Running rings around’ is found later again, in the 1875 Coursing Calendar: Ace-of-Trumps was immensely her superior, making rings round her, and winning all one way. The figurative use of the phrase, which refers to people being outwitted or outclassed rather than outrun, began
being used in the late 19th century. Several of these early uses come from Australia and New Zealand; for example, this piece from the New Zealand newspaper The Waikato Times, November 1880: Failing Mr Clark’s acceptance of the invitation to become a candidate [for election as Mayor], there are several other well-known citizens who could “run rings” around Mr Larkins. The alternative form of the expression is ‘run circles around’, which came into being later again, around the turn of the 10th century. This form is entirely disassociated from the source hunting context and was coined in the USA and is still used there, whereas most other English-speaking countries prefer the original ;run rings’ version. An example of it is found in the New York newspaper The Syracuse Standard, July 1897: The speedy Herreshoff flyer... could run circles around any of the craft running between Clayton and the Bay. We join together in wishing His Majesty peace and happiness on his special day. If you are on holiday in Hua Hin at the moment why not go along to His Majesties birthday celebration in the town, and join with the Thai people in paying your respects? You will be welcomed at what is a very interesting and moving event. Other, less auspicious anniversaries fall on December 4th. The opening of the first ever Burger King in Miami in 1954, and the very down to earth Vatican approval of the rhythm method of contraception in 1930. Despite being as reliable as a chocolate tea pot, this ‘method’ remains the only form of contraception to be officially endorsed by the Catholic church. Although much later the pill did become recognised as a useful medication for women who suffer heavy or irregular periods, providing of course they don’t take advantage of this religious loop hole. You would think that in the 21st century society in general would have become more accepting of womens’ rights to control pregnancy, yet just last week three people were killed by an armed man who stormed an abortion clinic in Colorado Springs. This kind of violent protest is far from rare, and the Colorado Springs clinic had already been moved to a high security building in an attempt to avoid attacks. At time of writing the motives of the gunman still aren’t clear, but surely violence of any sort isn’t appropriate when used as a protest against terminating life? Even

more puzzling was news of a woman in the UK who, having decided that she didn’t want children, shared her decision to be sterilised on social media, with the intention of raising some sensible debate on the pros and cons of motherhood. Unfortunately the 29 year old succeeded in stirring up some quite vitriolic responses, including personal threats and accusations of insanity. So much for social media. But what I find even more disturbing is the apparent reluctance of doctors to refer the woman for sterilisation. She alleges that of the six doctors she has approached with her request, just two of them referred her to the Marie Stopes clinic, a charity, which apparently didn’t have enough surgeons to carry out the procedure, even though the NHS would have funded it. Having made the same decision as this woman, at about the same age, I know that back in the 1970’s elective female sterilisation could be controversial, especially for women who hadn’t already had children. But even then my own doctor was understanding and supportive, and referred me for NHS treatment. It was only the prospect of a two year waiting list which made me opt for private treatment, an option which this unfortunate woman can’t afford. And as controversial as it may have been at that time I certainly wasn’t alone in my decision, with friends also deciding that motherhood and the pill weren’t for them. We took control of our lives, and ensured that we would never have to face the dilemma of abortion. So what has changed in the last 40 years which seems to make it so difficult for our NHS doctors and hospitals to put an end to unwanted pregnancies in the first place, and why are there still such violent objections to the only alternative some women have? Whatever your thoughts, best not share them on Twitter!
