unfair water distribution causing misery: conservation urgently needed

hua hin, THAILAND In the seven years we have been publishing AWOL, certain issues crop up again and again, and we return to one of these this week, namely water. It is clear from several media reports that Thailand in general is facing a water crisis, and while few reports mention Hua Hin, it has long been known to be one of the driest places in the country. Most of Hua Hin’s water is supplied from the Pranburi dam, and worryingly this relatively small reservoir is currently only at 35% of capacity, with just 135 milion cubic metres out of a possible 347 MCM. The next nearest supply is the Kang Kra Chan dam, but this too is well below capacity with just 46%, or 326 MCM. We contacted the water department to try and find out what plans are in place to find other sources of water, as well as to improve the distribution of what water is available, as it is clear that certain parts of Hua Hin are consistently under supplied and frequently have spells of one or two weeks without water, leaving residents with no choice but to order water from the private tankers, costing between 125 and 150 baht per cubic metre (1000 litres). Average water consumption in urban areas of Thailand is estimated at about 250 litres per person per day, so this cost can soon mount up. Unfortunately no one at the water department was able to answer our questions, but we will persevere. What we can say though is that even if you are in an area currently unblighted by water supply problems, you should still try to conserve water right now; on page two you will find some tips on how to save water and help get us through the dry season, while saving yourself money at the same time.

water conservation tips

Here are some ways you can save water at home:

Water Leaks There is nothing worse than a leak because you are paying for lost water. With a spanner and some washers these can be fixed quickly and easily.

2

Toilets Toilets account for almost one third of all household water usage. A water efficient dual flush toilet uses 6 litres on full flush and 4 litres with economy flush. This is less than half of a traditional toilet that uses 13 litres per flush. By installing a dual flush toilet, you will make significant water savings. Alternatively put a few stones or sand in an empty water bottle then fill it with water and place in your cistern, which reduces the amount of water each time it flushes. Showers The increasing popularity of Power Showers is a significant concern because spending over five minutes in a Power Shower can use more water than taking a bath. Taps Buy an aerator for each of your household taps. The aerator spreads the stream of water coming out of your tap into tiny droplets. This will prevent splashing and save water.

Dishwashers Washing plates by hand in the kitchen sink accounts for almost 10 per cent of household water consumption. You can save water by installing a water efficient dishwasher that will use the minimal amount of water necessary to clean and rinse. However, you must always wash a full load of dishes to gain maximum water efficiency. Washing Machines Do not be misled by energy efficiency labels. The rating is based on electricity usage and not on water usage. Some A+ energy rated washing machines use 14 litres of water per kilogram whereas water efficient washing machines use less than half of this amount. Garden Lawns Regularly watering your garden lawn with sprinklers can consume a large amount of water. You can save water in the garden, avoid using weed killer and sell your lawnmower by installing an artificial lawn. Water Butts Why only save water when you can collect it as well? Water butts are inexpensive, easy to install and you will be amazed how much water you can save each year by using a water butt in your garden.

SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Up in arms Roused; incensed. The original usage of ‘up in arms’ was entirely literal. To be ‘in arms’ or ‘at arms’ was to be equipped with weapons and armour. It isn’t clear why ‘arms’ was chosen as the name for weaponry. It may be as simple as a sword or club being seen as an extension of the arm. ‘Armour’ is just a form of defensive weaponry that a soldier was clad in. Like ‘vesture’, meaning ‘that which a person is dressed in’, that is, clothes, the ‘ure’ part may be translated as something like ‘collection of’. The spelling would be more properly ‘armure’, which is how it was spelled in early texts; for example: Robert of Gloucester’s Metrical Chronicle, 1297: He & hys armure... The style and decoration of armour was how knights were distinguished from one another in battle. This was important, as knights were more often captured and later ransomed rather than killed. Heraldic arms were the formalised development of that identity. A family’s ‘Coat of Arms’ was originally a actual decorated coat, worn by a knight when in battle. In the romantic poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, circa 1340, Gawain is

described as being dressed “With ryche cote armure”. There are many phrases in English that refer to ‘arms’ ‘man at arms’, ‘firearms’, ‘to arms!’, bear arms’, and ‘up in arms’ adds to that list. It is merely the more active form of ‘in arms’, in that it indicates that a soldier wasn’t just equipped for a fight, he was on his feet and ready for it. The term ‘up in arms’ began to appear in print in the 1590s. Who coined it isn’t entirely clear, although it does sound Shakespearian and the Bard did use it in more than one play of the early 1590s - Henry VI Part II and Richard III: March on, march on, since we are up in arms; Another contender is Sir Thomas More, who used the term in a work dated circa 1590: A number poore artificers are up In arms. The date of writing of More’s piece and of both of Shakespeare’s plays in debatable, so the author can’t be definitively decided. weird NEWS world The word of the year 2015 is ‘-ism’, apparently So it turns out the ‘word of the year’ isn’t a word at all… well, it’s part of a word. According to Merriam-Webster the word of the year is ‘-ism‘, the three letter suffix. However not just any ‘-ism’, but rather a few specific words which the dictionary company say were heavily searched during 2015. Socialism, feminism, communism, fascism, racism, capitalism and, of course, terrorism were some of the most-search-for words this past year. Perhaps this suggests that people are becoming interested in some of the wider ideologies and movements which quietly (and sometimes loudly) impact our lives everyday? Merriam-Webster said spikes in searches for certain words often followed major events – such as when a video which surfaced in November showed a white police officer shooting a black teenager, which was followed by multiple searches of the word ‘racism’. Searches for the word ‘fascism’ have also apparently increased since Donald Trump’s presidential campaign got under way. Peter Sokolowski, the company’s editor at large, commented that ‘ism words’ often collide to increase popularity. For example acts of terrorism are often followed by heavy use of the word ‘fascism’ in the media, while feminism and racism are often discussed side-by-side. ‘Fascism we more closely associate as the response to various acts of terrorism. After the attacks in Paris and the attacks in Colorado Springs and in San Bernardino, and because of Donald Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims, we then see the word fascism spike,’ he said.

czech republic Man ‘hides in restaurant until it closes and makes himself a massive feast’ A man allegedly hid in a restaurant until it closed recently so he could steal from it. But rather than empty the cash register, this person chose a different kind of loot. The man is accused of waiting until all the staff went home and locked the restaurant up, before eating six geese, 13 pounds of goose fat and liver, three ducks and an entire one-gallon jar of pickles. The Prague Post newspaper estimated that the alleged thief helped himself to roughly $800 (£525) worth of fine food, as well as washing it all down with several bottles of wine. Incredibly all this wasn’t enough for the guy, who then wrapped a beer and some strawberry cake up. Perhaps he had plans to start his own restaurant, as the thief also stole some chef whites – as well as searching through the staff lockers. Of course before the man could escape a cleaner arrived and called the police when they found the man in the restaurant. He now faces up to two years in prison.

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas when we want your opinion, we’ll give it to you On December 18th 1944 the US Supreme Court upheld an Executive Order which had been made following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941. The order had ruled on the forcible relocation of Japanese/Americans to what were known as War Relocation Centres. In reality internment camps. In the spring of 1942 around 120,000 mixed race men, women and children were relocated to the camps, situated in remote areas of the US. The camps were fenced and guarded but detainees were able to work, and had schools and hospitals which they staffed, (but never in supervisory roles.) Thankfully after the war the detainees were able to carry on with their lives as before, some becoming well respected figures in American politics, industry and the arts. But what had happened to them clearly shows the mistrust and fear in which they had been held, despite being American citizens. Back then of course we hadn’t heard of ‘political correctness’, and so those mixed race Japanese/ Americans could safely be assumed to be a threat, and dealt with accordingly. Now when someone dares to suggest that non American Muslim people should be banned from entering the States there are howls of protest from all over the world. Whatever you think of Donald Trump, with his perma tan and comb over, the guy is a contender for what is said to be the most important job in the world - President of the United States. A job which has in the past been been filled by a retired actor and an ex peanut farmer,

neither of whom brought the country to it’s knees. And yet Trumps’ idea of shutting down entry to the States of all non American Muslims has caused some extreme reactions around the world. He has been accused of racial/religious bigotry, and pretty much ostracised by the UK government - a power which at the same time is bombing Syria. Compared with what was happening in the early 1940’s, with those US citizens detained in camps, are Trumps proposals really so radical after all? Should such drastic ideas to try to protect a nation under threat be so vehemently criticised? Especially when that nation itself suffered such a huge terrorist attack in 2001. You will all have your own opinions, and it is after all around 70 years since those Relocation Centres were used. The world has moved on. We like to believe that we have become more tolerant of different beliefs and cultures, that we accept our racially mixed societies, and all the minority groups within them. But somewhere along the way to equality and human rights we seem to have lost our right to the freedom of speech, and have been gagged by political correctness. Is it now time for that to change? Along with Donald Trump there are other people prepared to speak out, including the new leader of the UK Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn. Branded as too ‘old Labour’ by his critics didn’t prevent Corbyn being elected. Perhaps we are seeing the start of a new order. One in which people can feel free to say what they really believe, particularly when it comes to deciding on matters as serious as terrorism which can affect us all. Next week we will take a lighter look at life during 2015 - simply because that is what everyone does at this time of the year - and will try to see what 2016 might hold for us.

Sunday 20th December 2015 PREMIER LEAGUE Newcastle v Aston Villa 00:30 Whatever happens in this match, Aston Villa are guaranteed to be bottom of the table at Christmas, a position that invariably spells relegation.Teams have famously escaped this destiny, but Villa look so poor right now that few would bet against the seemingly inevitable. Newcastle were themselves being written off a few weeks ago, but successive victories have changed that; however Villa will still sense an opportunity here. We can’t see them winning but they are an outside bet for a draw at best - however we are predicting a third win on the spin for the Geordies.

ham fisted Tyson Fury to quit boxing and join the Village People england World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is to sensationally quit boxing and join camp seventies music troupe, The Village People. Fury, 28, which is his age rather than his IQ, says the sudden and unexpected change of direction was taken on advice from his doctors. And the six foot eight inch heavy-hitter from Bolton says it’s nothing to do with the ‘gay stuff’ and everything do with their beautiful inspirational music. The Lancashire hard man revealed he likes nothing more than to prepare for a fight by listening to the hard-hitting track “YMCA”. “When Tyson Fury hears those lyrics, there is something Tyson Fury can relate to,” Tyson Fury told us. “Young man, there’s no need to feel down. I said, young man, pick yourself up the ground.” “That song could have been written for me. “And as you will have heard, I’ve got a pretty good singing voice. “

Above: Tyson Fury, who apparently finds it fun to stay at the YMCA, and occasionally finds it fun to put tape over his mouth, possibly something he should do more often

Fury has been dogged by accusations of homophobia since becoming World Champion, but has since listed Gay Rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and Wayne Sleep among his heroes. The boxer says he was inspired to take up the sport after watching the televised bout between Tatchell and sixty Neo-Nazi skinheads in Moscow’s Red Square. Asked who his favourite Village People member is, Fury insisted he was torn between the Red Indian and the Construction Worker. “When I say torn, I don’t mean literally torn – that would be disgusting.” Fury added, “You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal. You can do whatever you feel.” “I mean – who doesn’t feel hungry now and then?”
