hua hin, THAILAND One thing that Hua Hin has never lacked is a good choice of restaurants and other places to go to eat and drink, but in the past these were largely to be found right in or near the heart of the town. Over the years this has been changing, most notably with more out of town watering holes, but this trend has been spreading to restaurants and other eateries, with the full range of budgets catered to.

Nowhere has this become more evident than the Soi 94 area, which fifteen years ago was little more than a dirt road with the odd house surrounded by overgrown land. The transformation has been dramatic, and there are now at least forty food and drink outlets in and around the soi, with a very international feel - as well as standard Thai restaurants, you can find Indian, Japanese, British, Scandinavian, Mediteranean, Italian, Russian and French cuisine all within a few hundred metres, interspersed with a variety of pubs and bars, some of which also serve good food. The latest to join this culinary explosion is the first Western style Chinese restaurant and takeaway in Hua Hin, Chinese 94, and you can find their advert in this week’s issue on page 2.

Here at AWOL we have always believed that for it’s size, the Hua Hin area offers the best and most comprehensive choice of wining and dining establishments in Thailand outside of Bangkok, and with the growth of areas like Soi 94, and the development of others, like Soi 112 and Khao Takiab, we reckon this is going to be the case for quite a few years to come.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is..... Hobson’s choice No real choice at all - the only options being to either accept or refuse the offer that is given to you.

Two options: take it or leave it; that’s ‘Hobson’s choice’.

The expression is best known in the UK, but became used worldwide following the successful eponymous 1954 film starring Charles Laughton.

There is a story that this expression comes from a Mr. Hobson who hired out horses and gave his customers no choice as to which horse they could take. This has all the credentials of a ‘folk etymology’ myth but, in this case, the derivation is correct.

A search of Google returns several thousand hits for ‘Hobbesian choice’. The mistaken uses of that phrase, in place of the correct ‘Hobson’s choice’, originate from a confusion between the celebrated philosopher Thomas Hobbes (who, incidentally, was the originator of another commonplace phrase - ‘nasty, brutish and short’) and the less well-known carrier Thomas Hobson, to whom the phrase refers.

Thomas Hobson (1545–1631) ran a thriving carrier and horse rental business in Cambridge, England, around the turn of the 17th century. Hobson rented out horses, mainly to Cambridge University students, but refused to hire them out other than in the order he chose. The choice his customers were given was ‘this or none’; quite literally, not their choice but Hobson’s choice.

The phrase was already being described as proverbial less than thirty years after Hobson’s death. The Quaker scholar Samuel Fisher referred to the phrase in his religious text, The Rustick’s Alarm to the Rabbies, 1660:

business, which shows clearly how the phrase came into being: “He lived in Cambridge, and observing that the Scholars rid hard, his manner was to keep a large Stable of Horses, ... when a Man came for a Horse, he was led into the Stable, where there was great Choice, but he obliged him to take the Horse which stood next to the Stable-Door; so that every Customer was alike well served according.”

After his death in 1631, Hobson was remembered in verse by no less a figure than John Milton, saying “He had bin an immortall Carrier”. That seems rather a strange thing to say just after he had died. Eighty-six was a very good innings in the 17th century, but hardly immortality.

The phrase was still well enough known in the 20th century for ‘hobsons’ to be adopted then as Cockney rhyming slang for ‘voice’. It has no connection with the similar sounding ‘Hobson-Jobson’, which derived as a corruption by British soldiers in India of the Arabic street cry ‘Ya Hasan! Ya Husayn!’ = ‘O Hasan! O Husain!’’

(Hasan and Husain were grandsons of Muhammad).

The most celebrated application of Hobson’s choice in the 20th century was Henry Ford’s offer of the Model-T Ford in ‘any colour you like, so long as it’s black’.

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas a starman waiting in the sky One problem with writing a column just once a week is those headline stories which break just as you have submitted the next weeks’ page. And that is what happened last week with the announcement of the death of David Bowie.

At such times it would be all too easy to read the lengthy media articles about the person in question, and to be influenced by them. Which is why, on this occasion, I have so far avoided reading those articles and might catch up with them later. One thing though has become clear over the last couple of weeks - that many of Bowies’ fans are much younger than those of us who remember his early days.

With some failed records already behind him (including an album in 1967 which contained The Laughing Gnome) Bowie hit the big time in 1969 with Space Oddity, and then just carried on and on until the release of Blackstar just three days before his death. Little wonder that he continued to attract new fans along the way. But those who were around when he first fell to Earth will know that it wasn’t all plain sailing back then, as a browse through the UK album charts will show.

From 1969 and through the early 1970’s British music was undergoing far more of a revolution than it had a few years before when the Beatles shot to fame. As well as all of grandmas old favourites - Val Doonican, Max Bygraves, Dana and the like, there was a vibrant mix of rock, heavy metal, glam and prog rock, along with ongoing hits from Elvis and Cliff, and the Osmonds for the children!

The Stones, Rod Stewart, Slade, Fleetwood Mac, Abba, Wizzard, Hendrix, Mungo Jerry, 10CC, and many others were all up there in the early 70’s charts, all providing some serious competition. Disco was also big. People wanted to dance, and apart from Jean Genie and Rebel

Rebel, there wasn’t much in Bowies’ early singles catalogue that you could fling yourself around to.

So although he had some 68 entries in the UK charts between 1969 and 2000, only 19 reached the top 10, with just 5 making it to number 1. And yes, against all the odds The Laughing Gnome finally made it to number 6 when released as a single in 1973.

Where Bowie really excelled was with albums, and in 1983 he had a record number of 10 albums all in the top 100 at the same time. He also chose an excellent backing group to accompany him on the Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, and Aladdin Sane. The Spiders from Mars were formed in Hull of all places. Guitarist Mick Ronson and bassist Trevor Bolder were Hull lads, while drummer Woody Woodmansey was born in the nearby town of Driffield. We just have to be in there don’t we!

Sadly of that Spiders/Ziggy lineup only one now remains - Woody Woodmansey - who can still tell a story or two about the old times, given half a chance.

But it is Bowie who deservedly became the legend, and I would like to think that a fitting end to his story would be something like that of Spock. Shot out of the Enterprise in a shiny black casket to land on a distant planet far far away.

On January 22nd 1945 the Old Burma Road was reopened. The road, which had provided an essential route for sending supplies from Burma into China earlier in the war, had been closed by Japanese forces in 1942, rendering it useless. The re-opening was said to have been a great success thanks to the efforts of the UN.

However this will not be an easy game for them, and the Blues have been in better form since the departure of the Special One. They would love nothing more than to put a dent in Arsenal’s hopes, and this is likely to be a full blooded London derby, and we wouldn’t be at all surprised if it gets nasty. A draw is probably the most likely outcome, but we have a sneaking suspicion that this will be where Arsenal implode and get beaten, leaving the title race wide open.

Queen stripped of her crown after she refuses to fight Prince Charles

england The World Boxing Federation has announced that it is ready to strip the Queen of her crown after she refused to defend it against Prince Charles.

Her Majesty has been under pressure to get into the ring against the challenger for some time, not least from Charles himself, but has consistently refused.

The crown will be considered ‘open’ if the WBF carry out their threat, and would be awarded to either Princes Charles and William as soon as a bout could be arranged.

“Her majesty was a tasty fighter in her day but she’s been resting on her laurels and ducking a fight for too long,” explained WBF spokesman Simon Williams.

“Charles has been after a shot at the title for forty years and the time comes when you’ve got to say enough is enough.”

“Royalty is a fighters game, and if you won’t defend your crown – well, use it or lose it.”

especially against Princes William or Harry, but has asked if could stage a comeback against Prince Naseem Hamed as he’s a big fat sod these days.

It has also been reported that she might be prepared to face up against Donald Trump if he becomes President of the USA, in a winner takes all grudge match to unify the WBO and WBF titles, although this would hinge on equally vicious fights between Hilary Clinton

and at least three challengers, followed by an anticipated Trump - Clinton matchup.

Bookmakers are already taking bets on the outcome of a QEII versus Trump clash with some big money coming in backing a Royal victory.
