coward’s Victor’s way attempted murder as norwegian expat stabbed twice in back

hua hin, THAILAND An argument in a bar led to a Norwegian expat being stabbed in the back and left fighting for his life after his lung was punctured. The incident happened almost two weeks ago now, but due to legal reasons. we have been unable to report it until now. The Norwegian man, Oeyvind Rossbach, got into a heated discussion with an Egyptian man (who can’t be named for legal reasons) and another man from Sweden, in a bar in the centre of Hua Hin, on Poolsuk Road, late on Friday 15th January into the early hours of the Saturday. The staff at the bar advised Mr Rossbach to leave, which he did, but shortly after he was attacked in the street by the Egyptian man, who had picked up a knife from the bar and then proceeded to stab Mr Rossbach twice, with the second knife thrust causing the damage to his lung. This was witnessed by several people, and there is also CCTV footage of the attack. Mr Rossbach collapsed, but friends quickly came to his aid and rushed him to San Paolo Hospital. After a blood transfusion and a lung drain, doctors told Mr Rossbach that if he had arrived only a few minutes later he would have died, as he was drowning in his own blood. They also said that if the second stab wound had been two centimetres higher it would have been his heart, and he would also have died. The police were notified quickly and the Egyptian man was picked up in Bangkok at Suvarnabhumi Airport on the Sunday morning attempting to flee the country, and it is believed he was charged with attempted murder, and released on bail of 200,000 baht. At the time of writing it is unknown how the legal process will continue from here, but Mr Rossbach has recovered sufficiently to leave hospital and is taking legal advice, although it is not known what long term damage has been inflicted, either physical or mental.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 Your frequent boasts of being a real lady-killer will finally gain some credence when an FBI forensics team digs up your backyard. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 You’re no Mother Teresa, much to the utter shock and dismay of all those blind orphans in India. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 Try as they might, the stars can’t see the point in telling you about next week. You’ll just do whatever you damn well please, anyway. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20 The interesting thing about your future isn’t its extreme brevity, but how many angry, drunken Cossacks it holds.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 Your quest for abs of steel ends tragically this week when you cut yourself in half with a welding torch. Gemini May 22 – June 21 Sometimes it is best to simply let events unfold. However, doing so for the past 25 years was probably a mistake. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 The kind of pressure you’ll deal with this week would kill a lesser man, which, unfortunately, is exactly what you are. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 You’ve got a pair of gams that just won’t quit, making things quite awkward when management is forced to let them go.

Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 A wonderful romantic experience looms ahead for Taurus, which really sucks, as you’re a Virgo. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 Something deep inside of you will reawaken this week. Plan to spend most of Thursday sitting in your bathroom. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 You’ll soon come to regret catching fist-size chunks of jagged hail on your tongue. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 Any well-read person will notice several parallels between the story of Beowulf and your disastrous housewarming party this week.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Whistle-blower A person who tries to raise the alarm about a problem and publicizes it inside and/or outside of his/her organization. If the number of phrases that make direct reference to whistles is anything to go by, whistling looms large in the consciousness of the English-speaking peoples. Examples are: As clean as a whistle, Bells and whistles, Dog-whistle politics, Not just whistling Dixie, Pig and Whistle. Wet one’s whistle, Whistle and flute, Whistle down the wind, Whistling in a graveyard, Wolf whistle. You can whistle for it Similar activities, for instance humming, produce a much shorter list. ‘Whistle-blowers’ are people who attempt to draw their superiors’ attention to something they believe to be wrong and, if they fail in that attempt and if they feel strongly enough about the matter, go public. Such folk may have been around for a long time but it is only recently that they have been given a name. The expression ‘whistle blower’ was used literally well before it gained its current figurative meaning. Lots of people blew whistles; hunters were said to ‘whistle down the wind’ when they let their falcons loose to fly. Sailors, when needing a wind to free a becalmed ship, would ‘whistle for it’. The first profession to be labelled as ‘whistle blowers’ were the US police, who blew whistles to attract attention to wrongdoing. An early example comes from the newspaper The Janesville Gazette, June 1883, in a story about a policeman who woke half the town in order to forestall a riot: Quiet was restored upon the arrival of the regular police force, and ere the town clock had struck the midnight hour all had returned to their homes. But the crowd of people were all willing to bet that McGinley was the champion whistle blower in America.

More recently, football referees have also been called ‘whistle blowers’. The association with the blowing of whistles and the drawing of attention to a misdemeanour has now been extended into figurative use. The new use of the expression began in the 1960s and the earliest examples of its use are found in journalistic reports of the My Lai massacre in the Vietnam War, in which several hundred civilians were murdered. Such a report, which was made at the stage that newspapers were still reporting My Lai as an ‘incident’ and ‘alleged massacre’, was printed in the Lawton Constitutional, December 1969. This dismissed Ronald Ridenhour, the GI that brought the story to the public’s attention, as a fortune hunter with a vested interest: This “whistle-blower” has turned out to be a clever member of the anti-war faction which has been using the alleged misconduct of a few GIs to slander the American Army. In the 19th century we had ‘whistle blowers’, in the 20th we had ‘whistle-blowers’ and now we have ‘whistleblowers’. This changing of an expression into a word, with the intervening hyphenated phase, is one of the most common ways we form new words. There are many examples, from Shakespeare’s coinages ‘birthplace’, ‘bloodstained’ and ‘barefaced’ (using just the Bs), to more modern-day examples like ‘beancounter’ and ‘bombshell’ (and how long before ‘modern-day’ becomes ‘modernday’?). Search engines seem to have caught on to this mutation of phrases into words very quickly. A Google image search for “whistle blower” brings up pictures of people blowing whistles. A search for “whistleblower” retrieves pictures of Bradley (a.k.a. Chelsea) Manning. 7 ‘The Boy With A Bamboo Heart’ by Chantal Jauvin “A riveting, wrenching and inspiring account of a life’s journey. Dr. Amporn’s remarkable story is not about childhood survival or war-time battles, rather a life-long struggle to defeat his demons and transform his fate.” Nelson Rand, author and journalist. Paperback available at Asia Books E-book available on all platforms. Outside Thailand, paperback available at www.chantaljauvin.com facebook.com/chantal.jauvin1

hua hin chess club dutch grandmaster visits hua hin

On December 21st, The Hua Hin Chess Club hosted the international chess grandmaster, Dutch player Erik van del Doel, visiting Thailand. “He had some contact with our own Dutch player Aad Langendoen before coming”, explained Dacha restaurant owner Konstantin Lepekhin. Erik played 20 two minute ”blitz” or ”bullet” games, at Dacha, against Hua Hins best player Maxim Naumov from Russia. Maxim managed to make a draw in four of the games, but lost the rest. “It was very exciting. Maxim was winning in one of the games, but missed the win, which Erik easily spotted and of course later pointed out”, said Konstantin. On August 4, 2014, Swedish sports journalist Robert Okpu and restaurant owner Konstantin Lepekhin, started the Hua Hin Chess Club, at the Dacha Restaurant on soi 94. The Hua Hin Chess Club is free of charge, and open for all. Monday is club day, and club opening hours are 4 PM to 10 PM. Since its inception in August 4, 2014, the Hua Hin Chess Club has a small group of expats, turning up for chess at Dacha every Monday. “We play blitz, rapid and sometimes so called ”bughouse” chess. With or without clocks, from 4 pm every Monday. We have had players from Britain and Ireland, Belgium, France, Holland, Norway, Russia and Scandinavia. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find Thai players. I know most Thais prefer the ”makruk” version to ”western chess”. But there are strong Thai western chess players in Bangkok and other places in Thailand, so there should be some good Thai players in Hua Hin as well”, says frequent Hua Hin visitor Robert Okpu. The Hua Hin Chess Club, also arranges kids chess tournaments. As well as providing other board games: such as backgammon, go (Chinese chess), makruk (Thai chess) and shogi (Japanese chess). Anyone looking to come on Monday, or to join the Hua Hin Chess Club, can contact Konstantin Lepekhin at the Dacha restaurant. Telephone: 086 769 9187. Donations of old chess sets and clocks are also welcome!

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas the fat of the land The UK ranked first in the Western Europe obesity stakes in 2014, and we are said to have an obesity crisis. In the same year Thailand was second only to Malaysia in the ASEAN obesity levels, with the same criteria being applied in both countries. Long term expats will remember a Hua Hin where there was no McDonalds, no Burger King, and where you could count the number of 7/Elevens in town on the fingers of one hand. The kids - like all Thai people - love to graze, and flocked around the street food stalls after school. There was simply little else available to them in the vicinity before they boarded their school buses, but at least they weren’t buying the brightly packaged sweets and fizzy drinks which are partly blamed for the present weight problem. Which is where it all becomes quite confusing. Because although Thai food is generally thought to be very healthy, it can also contain a lot of sugar, salt and fats. Condensed milk is habitually used in coffee and tea, as well as in many desserts. The bread tends to be sweet, and even the milk - which Thais have been encouraged to drink more of to encourage their growth - is often sweetened and flavoured to appeal to their tastebuds. They simply like sweet things just as much as the sour and spicy, yet are suddenly becoming overweight. Those new kids on the block, Big Macs and Burgers with fries, are of course also taking their share of the blame, just as all fast food outlets in the UK do, along with anything classed as convenience food. Yet despite the availability of so much fast and convenient food in both countries, and in spite of the Thai sweet tooth, Thailands’ level of adults classed as obese or overweight in 2014 was still far lower than the UKs - with the UK having 61.7% against Thailands 32.2%. It seems likely that climate could play a part, as could the probability that more people in Thailand still cook from scratch, and importantly pass those skills on to their children. The grazing culture is also still served well by street vendors who cook to order - a practice which wouldn’t get past the Health and Safety in the UK - and fresh fruit is readily available neatly cut and bagged in cheap snack size portions. Of course both countries blame computers for people, in particular children, taking less exercise, and the fact that the UK adult obesity level was only 14% in 1980 does seem to bear this out. We have far more IT based sedentary jobs than in 1980. UK children are also less likely now to be let loose on the streets to play for fear of abduction and worse. Then there is the cost of healthier food. Local produce

is much cheaper in Thailand than in the UK, where not only do shoppers lack the time and skill to know what to do with it, but also grab those ready meals which appear cheaper, but in fact provide much less good nutrition pound for pound. So what are our leaders doing to tackle this crisis? Plan A is a sugar tax in the UK, designed to make fattening food products less affordable, and to encourage manufacturers to use alternatives to sugar. Which is fine providing that alternative sweeteners don’t themselves have side effects, and even better if the sugar tax were used to subsidise the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables. I’m not holding my breath... Plan B’s come from the food manufacturers and retailers themselves, also known as ‘jumping on the bandwagon’. Marks and Spencer is importing baby coconuts and installing them with ring pulls. All things coconut are considered healthy and trendy here now, but at 3 pounds each - about 150 baht - I hope they come with a straw as well. Meanwhile, and even more alarming, Unilever are planning an attack on our favourite ice creams by reducing the size of Magnums, Cornettos, and tubs of Ben and Jerry’s. This move will give customers a healthier choice by limiting the calories in our treats to 250 per serving. A Unilever director has said that customers will appreciate what they are trying to do, and will buy more. Am I missing something here, or doesn’t that defeat the object? Although Thailand still has a relatively smaller obesity problem than the UK, I hope its’ leaders take careful note of the UK’s, and the manufacturers, plans, while making a tidy profit selling coconuts to Marks and Sparks. On 29th January 1924 the ice cream cone rolling machine was patented. Where would we be without it?

Sunday 31st January 2016 FA CUP - FOURTH ROUND Liverpool v West Ham 00:30 A repeat of the 2006 ‘Gerrard’ Final and the away side will feel that they owe the Reds one in the Cup, and having already beaten them twice in the league this season, will probably be feeling confident they can do so. However Liverpool are now on a high, having back to back wins, with one of them meaning reaching the League Cup Final, so this will be a keenly contested and exciting cup tie. We are predicting though that the Hammers will expose Liverpool’s defensive frailties once again and be in the hat for the fifth round.

Company linked to slave labour keen to disassociate itself from doping scandal

england Slave labour enthusiasts Adidas have announced it is to terminate its sponsorship deal with the IAAF to avoid being tarnished by the doping scandal currently sweeping athletics. The sponsorship deal which, much like the average worker in an Adidas sweatshop, is 11-years old was due to run until 2019. Adidas insisted that it has a clear anti-doping policy in all forms of sport, but added that it wouldn’t rule out the use of performance enhancing drugs amongst its workforce. “Associating our brand with the IAAF would create the impression that we condone athletes increasing their speed and performance with the assistance of banned substance,” said an Adidas spokesperson. “However, we are comfortable with increasing our profit margins by employing people with no employment rights and paying them £10 a week. “The slogan for our Derrick Rose range of

Left: Lord Coe is said to be ‘determined to find a sponsor who share the ethics and morals of the IAAF and all the athletes’

footwear is actually meant as a reminder to our Asian workforce. “Never Break!” Meanwhile, the IAAF has been trying to find suitable replacement sponsors, and rumours are rife that they have found one who is willing to overlook the drug issue, mainly because they make millions of dollars from

drugs themselves. The new sponsor is expected to be officially announced in the next few days, but we can exclusively reveal that it is the Sinaloa cartel Corporation, who have apparently ‘made an offer the IAAF can’t refuse’, as well as offering to ‘silence any journalists who continue to blacken the name of the organisation’.
