cops collar fuel bandits contraband diesel stops shut down
hua hin, THAILAND While the police in Pattaya were busy nabbing pensioners playing bridge last week, the police in Hua Hin have once again shown that they are generally a cut above their cousins across the Gulf of Thailand, by apprehending a group of Thais who were selling contraband diesel. The arrests took place last Wednesday, following raids by police and soldiers from the 15th Army Circle at three locations along the bypass road between Cha Am and Pranburi, after receiving a tip off that diesel was being sold illegally. The raids uncovered around 200 litres of diesel along with equipment used to transfer the fuel to vehicles at three locations, one on the Bangkokbound side of the road at Moo 12 village in tambon Hin Lek Fai and the second on the south-bound side, opposite the first. The third illegal outlet was at Ban Nong Phai in tambon Thap Tai. Authorities said that the outlets were selling cheap, smuggled fuel to passing motorists at a total of seven different spots along the Hua Hin bypass road, for around two to three baht below the normal pump price. Lt Thirapong Namsala, who led the soldiers in the raids, said the three smuggled oil outlets had been in operation for about five months, and had been open around the clock. Three men are in police custody. Reports suggest that the fuel originated in Malaysia, where the pump price is cheaper, although this is likely to change following agreements made as part of the Asean Economic Community, where the vast majority of tarrifs between the countries will be removed, making this sort of operation less profitable, although it could potentially lead to more theft of fuel. Whether the price will drop in Thailand or rise in Malaysia, or a combination of both, is yet to be known, but given the backdrop of dropping crude oil prices it seems unlikely prices will go up.
