trash hero hua hin needs your help

hua hin, THAILAND We reported back in July last year on the efforts of the volunteer group Trash Hero in cleaning up the beaches and parks of the area, and at that time this was limited to the Khao Takiab vicinity, but we are pleased to say that over the weeks and months, this has expanded to now include areas in Hua Hin. The same arrangements apply as they did then, which is that every Thursday afternoon anyone is welcome to go along and help out, either as a garbage collector, or to provide support, garbage bags and/ or refreshments. The place to be targeted is announced every week on their Facebook page, Trash Hero Hua Hin, and yesterday (Thursday 18th February) the team were going to be tackling the beach and nearby areas of 19 Rai, near the immigration office. This coming Sunday (21st February) from 4pm they are also planning a clean up in Khao Takiab. The organisation also has a website at www.trashhero.org, where you can find out more about their efforts, and they currently have 15 ‘chapters’ spread across Thailand and Indonesia. The site states that their mission is “to create sustainable, community-based projects that remove existing waste, and reduce future waste by inspiring long-term behaviour change”. For anyone who would like to join in but is concerned about being in breach of the labour laws, both the immigration department and Trash Hero have reassured us that this type of activity is not only allowed, but actively encouraged for foreigners. The only proviso is to have on request a valid passport and visa (or copy) and to not have overstayed the permission to stay date. This truly is a fantastic initiative, and the more people who support it, the more widespread the message of caring for our environment can go, which in itself will reduce the problem faced in Thailand. Please join in if you are able to.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 A car accident awaits you in the coming days, which is unfortunate, as it’s the kind that involves too many Mountain Dews and not enough gas stations. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 An abrupt lifestyle change will find you joining the skua, sheathbill, and killer whale as the newest natural predator of the penguin. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 You’re a natural-born skeptic, always questioning the world in your search for empirical truth, rejecting along the way pseudoscience, psychobabble, and any other nonsense—like all Pisces. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20 You’ve long thought of yourself as a left-brain type of person, but the stroke will quickly and dramatically change all that.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 After years of putting up an emotional wall, you’ll realize the error of your ways this week and purchase 3 tons of brick and cement instead. Gemini May 22 – June 21 You will uncover an ancient Aztec curse this Thursday, one frightened locals say translates to “Justin Bieber.” Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 The baboon will see you as a threat to the social hierarchy of the pack, which, truth be told, is giving you way too much credit. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 He’ll scream, they’ll scream, you’ll all scream for ice cream—forcing several orderlies to rush back into the room and strap everyone down in their beds.

Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 Interior decorators claim that only about 18 inches of space is needed for people to pass between furnishings, but that was before they got a load of you. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 When asked where you see yourself in five years, refrain from laughing wildly, crying suddenly, and jumping clear out of a nearby window. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 They say you’re getting a little too old for a pacifier. Then again, as long as they let you keep sucking on their tits they can say whatever they want. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 You’re a great believer in “an eye for an eye,” but you still don’t understand why they always have to use yours.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... In the offing Imminent; likely to happen soon. This is one of the many phrases of nautical origin. It is quite simple to understand once you know that ‘the offing’ is the part of the sea that can be seen from land, excluding those parts that are near the shore. Early texts also refer to it as ‘offen’ or ‘offin’. Someone who was watching out for a ship to arrive would first see it approaching when it was ‘in the offing’ and expected to dock before the next tide. Something that is ‘in the offing’ isn’t happening now or even in a minute or two, but will inevitably happen before long. The phrase has migrated from its naval origin into general use in the language and is now used to describe any event that is imminent. ‘The offing’, although more usually used in the context of ships arriving, derives from the adjective ‘off’, which was used since at least the 14th century to mean ‘away from’ - as in ‘casting off’, ‘setting off’, ‘be off with you’ etc. In its literal nautical sense, the phrase has been in use since the early 17th century and the earliest citation of it found is a quotation from Samuel Purchas’s Purchas his Pilgrimes, which was published in 1625. Purchas printed the account of Sir Samuel Argall (called Argoll in some sources), the English naval officer who had set off from Jamestown, Virginia, on 19th June 1610, looking for a route to Bermuda:

example of the use of the long form of the letter ‘s’ in 18th century printing (rather inexactly represented by a lowercase ‘f’): ...fome other fmall Ships were feen in the Offing. Thofe Ships ftood away with their Boats a-head, fetting fire to fome, and deftroying and deferting other of their fmall veffels. All of the 18th century citations of ‘in the offing’ refer to the offing as a physical place. It wasn’t until the mid 19th century, in America, that our presently understood figurative meaning began to be used. An early example of that comes in S. B. Beckett’s Portland Reference Book and City Directory, 1850: We have known wives to forget that they had husbands..., especially when they supposed that a tax bill or a notification to do military duty was in the offing. Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? Email it to us on submissions@awolonline.net

The nine and twentieth [29th June 1610] in the morning I weighed [anchor] againe, the wind being all Southerly, turned until night, and then I came to an anchor in seven fathomes water in the offing to Sea. The phrase wasn’t commonly used until the beginning of the 18th century, as in this example from Josiah Burchett’s Memoirs of Transactions at Sea During the War with France, 1703. This is, incidentally, a classic

Hua Hin Pickleball Players club

What a fabulous morning’s Pickleball at the first Social Pickleball tournament. With over 20 players taking part from 8 different countries, the tournament was played in a great spirit of encouragement and friendship. After a tough morning’s play, congratulations go to worthy winners Lee and Bill, and to runners up Koe and John both Thai-Anglo pairings. The finalists emerged after some very strong group play, in five different pools. The B Bracket group winners were Rick and Kirsty from Canada and England, who edged out Carol and Vivien from Canada and Australia. The Pickleball club organisers were delighted with how well the tournament went, and want to thank everyone for taking part in what will most certainly become an annual event. A massive vote of thanks went to the event sponsors, The Red Piano and Chinese 94, for their kindness in donating the prizes, to the winners., and runners up. Next Saturday, 20th February, will see the clubs first competitive tournament taking place, and whilst the entry is smaller, there is sure to be some great Pickleball on show. Anyone who would care to come along to spectate, or just want to know what Pickleball is all about will be very welcome, and play will start at 10 am. The game of Pickleball was first established in the USA, over 50 years ago, but is popularity is growing rapidly worldwide. chinese doctor A Chinese Doctor can’t find a job in a Hospital in the US, so he opens a clinic and puts a sign outside ‘GET TREATED FOR $20 - IF NOT CURED GET BACK $100.’ An American lawyer thinks this is a great opportunity to earn $100 and goes to the clinic. Lawyer: “I have lost my sense of taste.” Chinese: “Nurse, bring medicine from box No. 22 and put 3 drops in patient’s mouth.” Lawyer: “Ugh. this is kerosene.” Chinese: “Your sense of taste is restored. Give me $20.” The annoyed lawyer goes back after a few days to recover his money. Lawyer: “I’ve lost my memory. I cannot remember anything.” Chinese: “Nurse, bring medicine from box no. 22 and put 3 drops in his mouth.” Lawyer (annoyed): “This is kerosene. You gave this to me last time for restoring my taste.” Chinese: “You got your memory back. Give me $20.” The fuming lawyer pays him, and then comes back a week later determined to get back $100. Lawyer: “My eyesight has failed, I can’t see at all.” Chinese: “Well, I don’t have any medicine for that, so take this $100.” Lawyer (staring at the note): “But this is $20, not $100!!” Chinese: “Your eyesight is restored. Give me $20”. You can’t beat Chinese Doctors.

deep thinking I mowed the lawn today, and after doing so I sat down and had a cold beer. The day was really quite beautiful, and the drink facilitated some deep thinking. My wife walked by and asked me what I was doing, and I said ‘nothing’. The reason I said ‘nothing’ instead of saying ‘just thinking’ is because she then would have asked ‘about what?’ At that point I would have had to explain that men are deep thinkers about various topics, which

Any items, packing boxes and transport available From Only 100 Baht per Month Contact David 092 927 7207

would lead to other questions. Finally I pondered an age old question: Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the nuts? Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the nuts, but how could they “know”? Well, after another beer, and some more heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with an answer to that question. Getting kicked in the nuts is more painful than having a baby, and even though I obviously couldn’t really “know”, here is the reason for my conclusion. A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, “It might be nice to have another child.” On the other hand, you never hear a guy say, “You know, I think I would like another kick in the nuts.” I rest my case. Time for another beer, and then maybe a nap in that hammock. be strong A man escapes from a prison where he’s been locked up for 15 years. He breaks into a house and inside, he finds a young couple in bed. He ties him to a chair. While tying the wife to the bed, the convict gets on top of her, kisses her neck, then gets up and goes into the bathroom. While he’s in there, the husband whispers over to his wife, “Listen, this guy is an escaped convict. Look at his clothes! He’s probably spent a lot of time in jail and hasn’t seen a woman in years. I saw how he kissed your neck. If he wants sex, don’t resist, don’t complain. Do whatever he tells you. Satisfy him no matter how much he nauseates you. This guy is obviously very dangerous. If he gets angry, he’ll kill us both. Be strong, honey. I love you!” She responds: “He wasn’t kissing my neck. He was whispering in my ear. He told me that he’s gay, thinks you’re cute, and asked if we had any Vaseline. I told him it was in the bathroom. Be strong honey. I love you, too.”

to hull

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas tourists graveyard? The Bangkok Post has reported on a rise in Thailand’s tourist deaths in 2015, which were up to 83 on the previous year - an increase of 54%. Figures provided by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports give the causes of these tourist deaths as 34 from road accidents, 9 involving boating/swimming, 4 suicides, 6 from congenital diseases, and 30 from other causes. It should come as no surprise that road accidents are top of the list, and it is probably safe to assume that the second highest group - ‘other causes’ - will include murders, extreme sports, ‘accidental’ falls from high buildings, and attacks by elephants in the mating season, to name but a few. Thailand has also ended up 132nd out of the 141 countries surveyed for their standards of tourist health and safety, and actually comes bottom of the heap of the ASEAN countries. Again, sadly no surprises there either. Thailand is a country which attracts gap year tourists intent on bungee jumping and zipping along wires, together with plenty of people who willingly jump on jet skis, banana boats, motorbikes and elephants. But what does surprise me is how tourism and sport can be lumped together under one Ministry. Granted sports can cause tourist deaths, but surely a Minister for Sport is meant to promote sport amongst his own citizens, to help them keep fit, and provide them with the resources and skills needed to compete internationally? That in itself should be a pretty important job. Just as tourism is important in it’s own right, with a reported peak of 30 million people holidaying in Thailand last year alone, and showing a fairly steady growth since 2000, when 10 million tourists arrived. Another big job by any standards, especially when tourism should logically link more closely with the leisure industry rather than with sport? Come on Thailand - splash out on an extra Minister! I should of course know better than to question the logic of it all, and trust the powers that be to carry out their promised investigation into the causes of tourist deaths. This will focus on two areas. Road accidents, which will concentrate on the Chiang Mai area, and boating/ swimming accidents around Krabi. Much as I love Thailand and it’s people, the reality is that most expats could summarise the results of the investigations without setting foot off their patios. So your challenge this week is to see how many causes of such accidents you can list in 10 minutes. And now for the elephants. The most recent incident involving the Scottish tourist thrown from an elephant and killed by it seems to have really stirred up our

Western animal rights people again. Elephants are wild animals and not meant to be ridden they say. Leave them to roam free. All very laudable sounding aims, after all none of us really like to see elephants on the sois, or performing their circus acts. But the do gooders forget that in Asia elephants have traditionally been used as beasts of burden, just as other countries have used horses and camels. Thailand’s elephants once went into battle. They hauled logs and transported people and goods. But unlike horses and camels they have tusks items of value which still put them at risk from hunters - as well as land mines in some parts of Asia. Most of those old elephant jobs have now gone, but the risks to the animals left in the wild remain. So until Thailand can find a way to provide adequate natural, safe and protected environments for it’s elephants the debates are likely to continue. Still on the subject of animals and accidents, February 19th 1945 saw hundreds of Japanese soldiers eaten by crocodiles on the Burmese island of Ramree. Ramree had been occupied by the Japanese during the war, until British troops landed to reclaim the island. The Japanese found their preferred escape routes cut off by allied forces, leaving them with only one option - a night time retreat across marshy land. Unfortunately the marshland was home to the salt water crocodile, said to be the most dangerous of the species. By morning a reported 980 Japanese soldiers had been eaten, although reports do vary, with some saying that less than 600 were lost, but it is unlikely that anyone was going to risk trying to count them. On a much sunnier note, the cornflake celebrates it’s 100th birthday today - February 19th - the day on which Mr Kellogg and Mr Bolin founded the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company in 1906. Fortunately the company later became known as Kelloggs.

Tuesday 23rd February 2016 FA CUP - FIFTH ROUND Shrewsbury v Man Utd 02:45 The lowest ranked team left in the competition face the dream tie that minnows over the years have dreamed of - the chance to beat the famous Red Devils, while their chairman counts the extra revenue and secretly hopes for a replay! As always, on paper, this is a no contest, but it has been proven time and again that either the bigger team is under strength and over confident, or the lesser team plays out of their skins and gets a lucky break. We’d love to see that happen again as it retains the magic of the FA Cup, but on this occasion we can’t see it happening, and expect Manchester United to be in the sixth round.

Chelsea challenging Crystal Palace for title of 4th best team in London

england

Chelsea’s recent outstanding form may leave them in a position to challenge Crystal Palace for the title of 4th best team in London. Following the plucky underdogs magnificent 1-1 draw against Manchester United the previous weekend, they folowed it up with a 5 - 1 thrashing of relegation candidates newcastle, sending them rocketing up to an unprecedented 12th in the League, leading some pundits to speculate they may actually be able to hold on to the coveted 4th place in their own city. Chelsea have been on what is for them a giant-killing run recently, with a dramatic 0-0 against Watford following on from thrilling draws against Everton and West Brom underlining their return to form. “We’re pursuing a very simple strategy at the moment,” said Chelsea Supremo Guus Hiddink.

“Now we have overtaken Crystal Palace, all we need to do is hope that every non-London team in the Premiership is disqualified and we can still qualify for Europe. “I think that’s achievable, especially if they all sign Luis Suarez one after another.”

Chelsea’s hopes may be dashed by Watford claiming to be a London team as well, leaving them with a mountain still to climb.
