belt up! Victor’s the roads are dangerous - stay safe

hua hin, THAILAND Following an incident involving a northbound Airport bus and an articulated truck on the Phetkasem Road last Saturday between Cha Am and Petchaburi, which left the bus in a ditch at the side of the road, we thought it was a pertinent time to once again remind our readers of the dangers that can be found travelling on the roads here. Fortunately, in this incident, while the bus suffered damage and needed replacing, it was fitted with seatbelts for passengers, and the crews operating this route do tell people to wear them, so there were no major injuries. Thai law actually stipulates the provision and wearing of seatbelts in such vehicles, and for private cars the law is that both the driver and front seat passenger must wear them, although there are no such regulations for rear seats; unfortunately many drivers ignore these laws much of the time and can frequently be seen quickly putting their belt on when they spot police. The safety benefits of wearing what are now relatively unobtrusive and comfortable devices are well known to most Westerners, many of whom would have been indoctrinated by well orchestrated campaigns in their respective countries, along with anti-littering and safe road crossing messages among others, all of which would be welcome here too. However the biggest problem concerning road safety in Hua Hin is the way a majority of people drive motorbikes and scooters, both endangering themselves and others, rendering the wearing of seatbelts in cars and other vehicles that much more important; for newcomers here, be warned that virtually no two wheeled vehicle will either obey the road rules, including driving on the correct side of the road, nor be aware or considerate of your vehicle or it’s capabilities and need for space to turn. AWOL has seen, heard, reported and mourned so many road fatalities and serious injuries over the years - please don’t make the next one yours.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 You’ll soon bathe in the blood of your enemies, though not before a number of rather embarrassing hints from your friends. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 Avoid staring directly at the stars this week, as a rider in their contract forbids anyone from making eye contact with them. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 You’ve spent years living in a fantasy world, which is rather unfortunate, as it’s one dreamed up by that hack Robert Jordan. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20 You’ll be punished for playing God this week, which isn’t surprising, considering the Cockney accent, exaggerated limp, and thick head of curly blond hair you gave Him.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 NASA officials will once again select you for a very important mission. Though, to be fair, going out and getting them coffee isn’t as exciting as it used to be. Gemini May 22 – June 21 All of your money problems will soon be solved, including how many more quarters Suzie has than Scott, and what, if any change, Michael should get back from Michelle. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 After years of painstaking research and rigorous clinical trials, medical science still doesn’t have an answer for why you’re such a jerk. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 That bottle of whiskey might help you sleep, but then, there’s probably an easier way than smashing it over your head every night.

Join the AWOL forum

Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 You’ll be praised for your contributions in the field of forensic science, though much of the credit should go to the barbed wire, the hydrofluoric acid, and the radial arm saw. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 Previously on Libra: “Is that… could it be…yes, it’s the tall, dark stranger!” “Welcome to Sydney, madam, I hope last night’s journey over water was to your liking.” “32, 8, 17, 24, 5.” Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 You’ll soon discover three new planets, a dwarf star, and two orbiting satellites—an incredible achievement for someone just trying to peer in on his neighbour. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 A mixture of dread, anxiety, and utter disgust will be yours this week when the nation’s housing blister finally bursts.

SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... A nod is as good as a wink To a person who is ready to understand or undertake something, any subtle signalling of it is sufficient. The context is usually of some undertaking that is borderline illegal or of sexual innuendo. This proverbial saying sounds as if it might be quite modern but it is in fact a 16th century phrase originating in England. The longer version of the phrase is ‘a nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse’. It might seem that this is just an elaboration of the shorter version, but it appears that the ‘blind horse’ version was in fact the original. The earliest examples of the proverb in print all give the fuller version, for example, in the Letters of the English lawyer and writer Joseph Ritson, February 1793: A nod, you know, is as good as a wink to a blind horse. It seems intuitive to interpret the longer version as meaning ‘neither a nod nor a wink have any purpose, both being equally pointless’. Nevertheless, the context of the early uses have it being used with the same apparent meaning as the short version, that is, ‘you may nod or wink - I will take your meaning either way’. During the 19th century the expression began to be shortened and the blind horse was left at home. Citations from that period use the form ‘a nod is as good as a wink etc.’, which clearly indicates that the later usage was simply a shorthand way if writing the original. More recently, the expression has gained currency in the form of “a nod is as good as a wink to a blind bat”, which Eric Idle used in his ‘Nudge, nudge’ sketch in Monty Python’s Flying Circus. The character Idle played was a nonsense-talking fool who came out with a string of meaningless innuendos. The choice of bat was knowing, as bats are generally regarded as blind and so calling the creature a blind bat emphasized the ridiculousness of the character’s gabble... and, before anyone writes in, we know that bats aren’t really blind.

A second offering this week as we look at the phrase A little of what you fancy does you good A euphemistic way of expressing the benefits of sex. This proverbial saying was first the title of a vaudeville song, made famous by the risqué Victorian singer Marie Lloyd. Lloyd was an immensely popular music hall performer in England towards the end of Queen Victoria’s reign and into the early 20th century, much to the chagrin of the moralists of the day, who did everything they could to prevent her from performing. This included having her refused entry to the USA in 1913 for “moral turpitude”. The songs she made popular were apparently fairly harmless but she managed to deliver even chaste material with a certain lewdness. The style she adopted was of a winking familiarity with the audience, all of whom were of course happy to play along with every double entendre. The chorus of “A Little of What You Fancy Does You Good”, goes: I always hold in having it if you fancy it If you fancy it that’s understood And suppose it makes you fat? I don’t worry over that ‘Cos a little of what you fancy does you good. No one present at performances imagined that Lloyd was singing about cream cakes, although the line has in fact been used to advertise them in recent years. The sexual innuendo that was ever-present in the music hall has now largely been forgotten. Marie Lloyd has been a continuing influence on British variety and comedy acts, being the template for artists like Max Miller and inspiration for the saucy euphemism of the Carry On film series. It is clear that Mae West (“I’m the kinda girl who works for Paramount by day, and Fox all night”) also took inspiration from Lloyd’s (“I sits amongst the cabbages and peas”) manner of stage patter.

Hua Hin Pickleball Players club

Yet another great mornings play at the Clubs first open competitive tournament. It was not the biggest entry, but very encouraging for the inaugural competition. The format for play was 3 pools of 4 players, who played in promotion and relegation style mini leagues, with the total number of points deciding who qualified for the higher grouping. After some entertaining play, this resulted in the four strongest players on the day, playing in a finals grouping on court 1. The concluding placement, of the closely contested finals group, which a was once again decided on points count back were. Overall winner, and 1st place) Alison Fulton from Scotland. 2nd place) Bill Evans from England, who overcame 3rd place) Thomas Zack from the United States of America and 4th place) Elaine Shallcross, from England. Hua Hin Pickleball Players Club, would like to thank all who participated in the tournament, and the sporting manner in which everyone played. Although play in this tournament was definately more serious and competitive this week, everyone had a really enjoyable experience. Thanks were given to Alison Fulton, for organising the competition, and to tournament sponsors, The Red Piano, and Chinese 94, for their generosity in providing winners and runners up prizes. Both of the clubs tournaments have been a huge success, and the clubs representatives are thrilled with their progress to date, and the growth of Pickleball in Hua Hin over the last two years For any further enquires about the sport, club days or beginners sessions , please contact Elaine on 0861622812 9

little johnny Little Johnny is sitting in class one day when the teacher says, “I’m going to give you a letter of the alphabet and you need to give me a word that starts with that letter and use it in a sentence. OK, Let’s start with A” Little Johnny raises his hand and shouts, “Teacher! Pick me! Pick me!” The teacher thinks to herself, “I know what he’s going to say.” So she calls on another student. Next, the teacher asks for the letters B,C, and D. and each time Little Johnny raises his hand the teacher ignores him and calls on other students. This continues until she reaches the letter U. By this time Little Johnny is almost jumping out of his seat. The teacher can’t really think of a bad word that starts with that letter. So she calls on him. “U-R-I-N-A-T-E, urinate.” The teacher rolls her eyes and says, “OK, now use it in a sentence.” Little Johnny responds, “Urinate, but if you had bigger tits you would be a ten.”

little johnny 2 Little Johnny goes to see his Grandad, to ask him about his experiences of the war for a school history project. After talking for ten minutes Grandad can see that Johnny is bored so to liven things up says “If you promise not to tell your Grandmother and keep quiet I’ll show you a bullet!” “Wow” says Johnny, “You’ve got a real bullet?” So Grandad show’s little Johnny the bullet, after carefully inspecting it he turns to the old man and says “do you have any other memorabilia?” Grandad smiles and tells him “I’ve got a revolver.” “A REVOL...” “SSHhhhh! “In my old artillery box with the grenades.” smiles Grandad. “GRE--” squeals the boy. “Sshhhush lad,” The old man warns, “your grandmother won’t be happy about me showing you weapons.” “Can I see the grenades?” “Yes” answers the old chap, pleased to have his grandson so interested, but still wary of his wife. “I suppose you’ll want to see the the rifle too.” “A RIFLE!” Breathes the boy, “oh Grandad where is the rifle?” “With the machine gun.” Confesses the old man. “A MAC... machine gun Grandad?” the boy states incredulously. “Where’s the machine gun?” The old man looks up and replies “In the loft behind the tank...” “YOU’VE GOT A TANK?!” The misdirected shot A couple of women were playing golf one sunny Saturday morning. The first of the twosome teed-off and watched in horror as the ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole. Indeed, the ball hit one of the men and he immediately clasped his hands together at his crotch, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony. The woman rushed down to the man and immediately began to apologize. “Please allow me to help, I am a physical therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you’d just allow me!” She told him earnestly. “Ummph, oooh, nnnoo, I’ll be alright...I’ll be fine in a few minutes,” he replied as he remained in the fetal position still clasping his hands together at his crotch. The woman takes it upon herself to begin to “ease his pain”. She began to massage his groin. After a few moments she asked, “does that feel better?” The man looked up at her and replied, “yes, that feels pretty good ... but my thumb still hurts like hell!”

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas time bandits Time flies, and with less than four weeks to Easter we look back to the 1916 Easter Uprising in Ireland, the centenary of which will be commemorated in the Emerald Isle this year. Original plans by the British Parliament to grant home rule for Ireland had been postponed in 1914 due to the outbreak of World War One - which many thought would be over and done with in a matter of months. As a result members of the Manchester branch of the Irish Volunteers paramilitary organisation took the opportunity to train for the British army with one of it’s ex Sergeant Majors, thinking that a short stint fighting for Britain could be good experience. Those supporters of Irish independence included three Mancunians of Irish descent, whose stories went untold for decades. Liam Parr, Larry Ryan and Gilbert Lynch were three of the Mancunians who opted to support the Easter Uprising, rather than go to war with Britain. It wasn’t an easy decision. Many supporters of Irish independence thought that their cause would be viewed more favourably by Britain if they did their bit in WW1. Others, our three included, believed it was their patriotic duty to fight directly for Ireland. So they joined a 100 strong group of men from other parts of Northern England, as well as from Scotland and London, who would fight in the week long occupation of the Dublin GPO (General Post Office) in 1916, an event which ultimately led to the creation of the Irish Republic. Of the three men only Parr returned to England to live unobtrusively, believing that he was at risk of being found out by the British authorities. Ryan ended up being imprisoned in New York for gun smuggling, while Lynch stayed in Ireland and became head of the Irish TUC. Little is known about the fate of their paramilitary colleagues.

In another example of how time flies, Thailands’ ex Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has now been living in exile for almost 10 years, save for a trip back to Thailand with his wife on 28th February 2008, when both faced charges of corruption in the Supreme Court. On that return he was given what was described as a rock star welcome by around 5000 supporters, but he didn’t hang around for too long, skipping bail and fleeing to the UK 6 months later with his wife when she was sentenced to 3 years. Thaksin himself received a 2 year sentence in the October, following which the British government revoked the couples’ visas while they were travelling in China. (A nice easy way out of a diplomatic dilemma.) Thaksin now lives in exile in Dubai, and as the 10th richest Thai in Forbes list for 2015 he can well afford to do so, despite a lot of his assets being frozen. Yet he still has a big following in Thailand, where he had become the first politician in the countries’ history to complete a full term in office - from 2001 to 2005. During that time his delivery of policies to help rice farmers, and to introduce the 30 baht health scheme, only served to increase his popularity, especially in his native north, and in 2005 he was re-elected as Prime Minister with the highest voter turnout in history. Clearly none of his success could be attributed to allegations of vote buying, and as for his future? Well, he seems to be lying low for now.

Sunday 28th February 2016 league CUP - FINAL Liverpool v Man City 23:30 A fixture list quirk has meant that this game is followed four days later by the identical Premier League game, one which City might well consider more important, and we fully expect a weaker team as a consequence, giving Liverpool an excellent chance of lifting the cup. We are expecting a lot of goals in this game, especially if City’s backup keeper is between the sticks! We think Klopp will be determined to get something from this, so we predict a Reds win by the odd goal in five.
