belt up! Victor’s the roads are dangerous - stay safe
hua hin, THAILAND Following an incident involving a northbound Airport bus and an articulated truck on the Phetkasem Road last Saturday between Cha Am and Petchaburi, which left the bus in a ditch at the side of the road, we thought it was a pertinent time to once again remind our readers of the dangers that can be found travelling on the roads here. Fortunately, in this incident, while the bus suffered damage and needed replacing, it was fitted with seatbelts for passengers, and the crews operating this route do tell people to wear them, so there were no major injuries. Thai law actually stipulates the provision and wearing of seatbelts in such vehicles, and for private cars the law is that both the driver and front seat passenger must wear them, although there are no such regulations for rear seats; unfortunately many drivers ignore these laws much of the time and can frequently be seen quickly putting their belt on when they spot police. The safety benefits of wearing what are now relatively unobtrusive and comfortable devices are well known to most Westerners, many of whom would have been indoctrinated by well orchestrated campaigns in their respective countries, along with anti-littering and safe road crossing messages among others, all of which would be welcome here too. However the biggest problem concerning road safety in Hua Hin is the way a majority of people drive motorbikes and scooters, both endangering themselves and others, rendering the wearing of seatbelts in cars and other vehicles that much more important; for newcomers here, be warned that virtually no two wheeled vehicle will either obey the road rules, including driving on the correct side of the road, nor be aware or considerate of your vehicle or it’s capabilities and need for space to turn. AWOL has seen, heard, reported and mourned so many road fatalities and serious injuries over the years - please don’t make the next one yours.
