skinny dipping tourists escape arrest
hua hin, THAILAND A group of Japanese tourists were caught on camera last Saturday night frollicking naked in the sea, with the pictures subsequently posted on the internet. They escaped the long arm of the law however, as they had left the country before the Thai police could take any action. Thailand has quite strict laws regarding nudity, but more importantly most Thais find it offensive, however humorous this particular incident might be. Many foreigners are unaware of this however, and men can frequently be seen shirtless , and women in bikinis, away from the beach in the streets, shops and bars. While foreigners may scoff at what they regard as prudish and outdated attitudes, the fact is that being without a shirt away from a pool or beach area is regarded as indecent exposure and the transgressor can be fined up to 500 baht. It is also seen as being extremely disrespectful, regardless of how attractive the body on display is. The Japanese tourists were probably only indulging in something that is quite popular in their home country, and to be fair also carried it out in the dark - some Twitter users complained that the photos posted weren’t clear enough! However everyone needs to respect both the law in Thailand, and the sensitivities of other people, so even on the beach women should not be tempted to sunbathe topless. For anyone who has a penchant for naturism and nudity, there is the Naturist Association Thailand (website thailandnaturist.com) which has a list of resorts and events geared towards naturists which won’t land you in trouble with the police.
