skinny dipping tourists escape arrest

hua hin, THAILAND A group of Japanese tourists were caught on camera last Saturday night frollicking naked in the sea, with the pictures subsequently posted on the internet. They escaped the long arm of the law however, as they had left the country before the Thai police could take any action. Thailand has quite strict laws regarding nudity, but more importantly most Thais find it offensive, however humorous this particular incident might be. Many foreigners are unaware of this however, and men can frequently be seen shirtless , and women in bikinis, away from the beach in the streets, shops and bars. While foreigners may scoff at what they regard as prudish and outdated attitudes, the fact is that being without a shirt away from a pool or beach area is regarded as indecent exposure and the transgressor can be fined up to 500 baht. It is also seen as being extremely disrespectful, regardless of how attractive the body on display is. The Japanese tourists were probably only indulging in something that is quite popular in their home country, and to be fair also carried it out in the dark - some Twitter users complained that the photos posted weren’t clear enough! However everyone needs to respect both the law in Thailand, and the sensitivities of other people, so even on the beach women should not be tempted to sunbathe topless. For anyone who has a penchant for naturism and nudity, there is the Naturist Association Thailand (website thailandnaturist.com) which has a list of resorts and events geared towards naturists which won’t land you in trouble with the police.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 Since the dawn of time, man has dreamed of flying. After this Thursday, though, it’ll mostly just be nightmares. Gemini May 22 – June 21 It’s not true that everything you like is illegal, immoral, or fattening, but that’s because you’re a boring Puritan with no imagination or glands. SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Tell it to the marines A scornful response to a tall and unbelieved story. The US Marine Corps are probably the best-known marines these days and this American-sounding phrase is often thought to refer to them. This isn’t an American phrase though and, although it has been known there since the 1830s, it originated in the UK and the marines in question were the Royal Marines. The first marines in an English-speaking country were The Duke of York and Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot, formed in 1664, in the reign of Charles II. Charles I of Spain had established a similar marine corps - the Infantería de Armada (Navy Infantry) in 1537 but, being from a non English-speaking country, that corps are hardly likely to be the source of the phrase. The Duke of York’s men were soldiers who had been enlisted and trained to serve on-board ships. The recruits were considered green and not on a par with hardened sailors, hence the implication that marines were naive enough to believe ridiculous tales, but that sailors weren’t. Such a tall tale is often quoted as the source of this phrase. It is said King Charles II made a remark to Samuel Pepys in which he mocked the marines’ credulity in their belief in flying fishes. That’s a nice story, but it has been shown to be a hoax that was perpetrated in the 1900s by the novelist W. P. Drury - a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the Royal Marines. Most of the early citations give a fuller version of the phrase - “You may tell that to the marines, but the sailors will not believe it”. This earliest reference found to it that uses the short version that is used today comes from the transcription of a journal that was written by John Marshall Deane, a private in the Foot Guards. His journal was written in 1708 and was transcribed and printed in 1846, under the title of A Journal of the Campaign in Flanders. The preface, which was the work of the transcriber rather than Deane and so must be

dated as 1846 rather than 1708, includes this: [The commanding officer] if a soldier complained to him of hardships which he could not comprehend, would be very likely to recommend him to “tell it to the marines”! The longer version of the phrase is found earlier, in John Davis’s The Post-Captain, or, The wooden walls well manned comprehending a view of naval society and manners, 1804: “He may tell that to the marines, but the sailors will not believe him.” Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? THE HEAT IS ON!

Anyone who has spent any time in Thailand will have become aware how fierce sunlight can be here, compared to the majority of other countries; you can quickly get sunburnt, but that is not the only thing that sunlight can damage - your home, business or valuables can suffer, not only from physical damage, but also high energy costs as you try to stay cool. This is where installing window film can save you money and protect your belongings. Solar Gard and Optivision films reject up to 79% of solar energy – providing you greater temperature stability and comfort while reducing solar heat gain and bothersome glare. Kaiyo Window Film Specialists will professionally fit window film to the inside of your existing windows. Many films are optically clear, meaning they’re virtually undetectable inside or out. Others offer a tint or reflectivity that increases your privacy and enhances the look of your home. Maintenance is worry-free. Simply clean windows as you normally would. The benefits of installing window film are many, whether it is for home, office, vehicles or retail premises; • Save up to 30% on utility bills by lowering heating and cooling costs • Helps you to consume less energy • Provides solar heat and glare protection for improved comfort • Provides protection by holding shards of glass together if broken • Protects your family and belongings from damaging ultraviolet rays • Enhances the curb appeal and privacy of your home • A deterent barrier against intruders for added security and peace of mind Contact Kaiyo Window Film Specialists now (see advertisement below) to get more information on how installing window film can make your life more comfortable and save you money. They have over 25 years experience in all aspects of solar control, safety, bomb-proofing and privacy window film application in the UK and Europe, and are now offering the same high standard and invaluable knowledge using the best US made films with a 10 year guarantee, and latest high tech measuring equipment, here in Thailand. All their installers are trained by them or are approved installers from the manufacturers.

The Freudian Slip Ted and John are setting in the bar and John asked Ted if he bought the train tickets to go see the game this weekend. Ted says yes but with a strange look on his face. John asks “Is there anything wrong?” Ted says “No, everythings OK.” They take a few more sips of beer and Ted asks John if he had ever embarrassed himself by saying something he didn’t mean to say. John said sure, it happens to everyone. Ted says “There’s a name for that isn’t there...you know, where you accidently use the wrong words when you are trying to say something?” “Yes”, says John, “it’s called a Freudian slip.” “Yeah, thats it” says Ted, “I couldn’t think of the word.” “Why are you asking?” says John. “Well, yesterday I went to the train station to get the train tickets, and the girl selling the tickets has this incredible set of jugs. I pulled out the money and laid it on the counter and asked her to give me two pickets to Titsburg and then had to embarrassingly say I mean two tickets to Pittsburg. God, it just embarressed the hell out of me. You ever done anything that stupid?” “Funny you would ask”, says John. “Just this morning my wife and I...gosh, I guess we’ve been married going on 23 years now..., were having breakfast. I was reading the paper and drinking my coffee. I meant to say, ‘dear, would you please pass me the sugar’,but instead I said, ‘You bitch, you’ve ruined my life.’”

archaeolgy A team of archaeologists was excavating in Israel when they came upon a cave. Written on the wall of the cave were the following symbols in order of appearance. A dog, a donkey, a shovel, a fish and a Star of David. They decided that this was a unique find and the writings were at least more than three thousand years old. They chopped out the piece of stone and had it brought to the museum where archaeologists from all over the world came to study the ancient symbols. They held a huge meeting after months of conferences to discuss what they could agree was the meaning of the markings. The President of their Society stood up, pointed at the first drawing and said, “This looks like a dog. We can judge that this was a highly intelligent race as they knew how to have animals for companionship. To prove this statement you, can see that the next symbol resembles a donkey, so, they were even smart enough to have animals help them till the soil. The next drawing looks like a shovel of some sort, which means they even had tools to help them. Even further proof of their high intelligence is the fish, which means that they had a famine that hit the earth whereby the food didn’t grow, they would take to the sea for food. The last symbol appears to be the Star of David which means they were evidently Hebrews.” The audience applauded enthusiastically, the President smiled and said, “I’m glad to see that you are all in full agreement with our interpretations.” Suddenly a little old Jewish man stood up in the back of the room and said, “I object to every word. The explanation of what the writings say is quite simple. First of all, everyone knows that Hebrews don’t read from left to right, but from right to left... Now, look again..... It now says: “HOLY MACKEREL, DIG THE ASS ON THAT BITCH!”

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas a collection of celebrities What is it about famous women that makes them hoard all their clothes and accessories? From Imelda Marcos and her vast collection of shoes, to Elizabeth Taylor and Wallace Simpson and their jewels. And from Princess Diana’s dresses to Mrs Thatcher’s handbags. At some point these things just become unwanted reminders of times gone by - unused, gathering dust, and a burden on insurance policies - they mostly end up being sold at auction. The puzzling thing is - at what point in their careers did these women realise that their outfits and bling might one day become collectors items, or did they simply have too much storage space and no time to go to charity shops like mere mortals? Because let’s be honest ladies, we all like a change sometimes, even in the jewellery department. We even secretly find that we have things that appear to have shrunk since we last wore them, so we try to be very strict now and then and have a good clear out. Which as well as making us feel quite good, also provides an unnecessary excuse to re-fill the spaces left in our wardrobes. Sure there will always be a few things we will never part with, but with internet selling now available to all even those once treasured wedding dresses aren’t safe any more. There is of course a case to be made for preserving some famous peoples’ stuff in museums, or in the case of Elvis to provide a lucrative shrine. And this year 5 decades worth of Cilla Blacks’ clothes go on tour to raise money for charity, which is fine, but what made her think of hanging on to all those old outfits in the first place? It was a recent competition for prizes of 5 of Mrs Thatchers’ ‘iconic’ handbags which prompted these musings. Mainly due to doubts over the motives of some people who will have entered it, because it seems almost inevitable that one or more of those iconic bags will end up in some pagan ritual or other.

The Thatcher auction last December actually exceeded all expectations, earning around 3 million pounds for the Thatcher children, (that should keep Mark going for a while) and curiously included Mrs T’s red Ministerial despatch box. Which, as an ex civil servant, came as a surprise to me. I had always assumed that along with the stapler and the calculator, the despatch box would remain the property of Her Majesties Government. Still, there are some signs that maybe attitudes are slowly changing. Last year Joan Collins had the sense to auction off her old clothes while still able to enjoy the proceeds, and in 2011 the ‘Sellebrity’ online auction site was launched, aimed at eliciting items from celebs to raise money for charities. So if you really do want a signed tie worn by Stephen Fry to add to your own clutter, or a pair of Bradley Wiggins’ cycling shoes, Sellebrity is the place to look. It also seems to be male dominated, which proves a point. Today - March 11th - is the 85th birthday of newly wed Rupert Murdoch. Any comment would be superfluous.

Sunday 13th March 2016 FA CUP QUARTER FINALS Manchester United v West Ham United 23:00 This has all the makings of a classic FA Cup tie - two teams in pretty good league form, both challenging for European places, but within three wins of the FA Cup. The Hammers have made great inroads under Slaven Bilic and are no longer an easy side to play against, while Louis Van Gaal has proven some of his doubters wrong with bold youth selections and an increasingly attractive playing style. This is a hard match to predict but the bigger momentum seems to be with the away side right now, so we are going for West Ham to progress, but possibly after a replay.

muppet show The Muppets launch defamation case following Steve McClaren comparison

england

The Muppets are set to launch defamation proceedings against a number of Newcastle United fans after they were compared to Steven McClaren on social media. Several Twitter users are expected to face legal action after defaming the absurdist troupe of puppets in a series of tweets following Newcastle’s Premier League defeat to Bournemouth, which likened manager McClaren to a ‘muppet’. Appointed Muppet spokesman, Gonzo, said suggestions of similarities to the former England manager were deeply offensive. He told reporters, “We are apoplectic at the volume of Steve McClaren muppet analogies. “We have spent our careers striving to provide entertainment to their adoring public.

Left: Steve McClaren feels the icy hand of Mike ‘Miss Piggy’ Ashley working his appendages

“Yet the most entertaining thing this McClaren bloke has ever done is a terrible Dutch accent and that time he looked like a prick using an umbrella.” “Well, unless you’re a Sunderland fan, in

which case everything he does is funny. “But we have our reputations to think about, and so we have instructed our lawyer to defend the good name of muppets everywhere.” Newcastle fan Simon Williams expressed his concern that there are now very few names left that the fans can use to describe their manager. “Calling him a ‘spineless, incompetent arsehole who inspires hatred amongst the people of Newcastle’ doesn’t work either.” “Well, not unless we want a letter from George Osborne’s lawyer.”
